While rules are cited, so is the comment that rules are made to be broken. Sidebars emphasize key points. Written in the first person, the text is fun and informal as if the experts are in the same room. Good-quality, full-color photos and illustrations show the correct or incorrect techniques. Often they will show a sequence of the same shot using various settings. A good choice both for beginners and amateurs who want to improve their skills.

Although this book covers much, if not all, of the same territory, it takes a different and far better approach. Based on the authors' syllabi for their photography classes, the book truly instructs novice photographers in a clear, pleasant manner. The book will be a delight to anyone who has struggled to understand the relationship between aperture and shutter speed. The Rowinskis thoroughly review film, cameras, lenses, and other equipment as well as technique in a practical, informal manner. The authors then discuss a large and varied number of outdoor photography situations, offering sound advice on how to make the best possible photograph. Their highly readable book will appeal especially to those who want not only to learn a little more about technique but to enjoy the experience of making photographs in the great outdoors. Beautiful photographs and superb text make up this book. Ifirst ordered it through Interlibrary loan, and then decided topurchase it. It is well worth the money spent.

One of a series of L.L. Bean handbooks, it provides a good introduction to outdoor photography. This is by no means for the experienced photographer as topics covered are more of a general nature and helpful to novices. Covering equipment to shooting techniques, this book is perfect for someone interested in photography. While the emphasis is on outdoor photography (obviously), the lessons are easily transferable to general practice. This book is easy to carry in your backpack, beside your camera. For more advanced and thorough techniques, I highly recommend any of the Ansel Adams series of "how to" books.

I have over 15 years experience in working and playing in the outdoors. This book as related to photography is an excellent book to help you increase your skills in the outdoor situations that you would encounter. I find that the book will not qualify you as an expert to get your self into photographic opportunities in the wild. Basically I find that the book will help you get started on an exciting part of photography shooting wildlife and nature scenes.
