4.0 out of 5 stars L - in a nutshell..., May 8, 2000
By
This review is from: L (Audio CD)
Well, I saw moe. for the fifth time on this weekend and went out and decided to see how the live album was. I'm not too big on albums as I like to listen to live tapings of moe. but I figured I should give this a spin. Its a great selection of songs and it sounds quite good, thanks to the talent of the band's soundman, Steve, and the producer of the album John Siket (who also produced the soon to be released Phish album Farmhouse). My only complaint about this double-live cd is the compression. Its normal for albums that are commercially to released to have the sound compressed, unfortunatly I feel this has 'altered' the way the band sounds live to an extent, which is why I only gave the cd 4/5 stars. In conclusion, I do beleive this is a good cd and do not feel gypped out of my money, but if you haven't seen moe. live for yourself yet, make sure you are there the next time.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY........live moe. for the world to hear, April 18, 2000

This review is from: L (Audio CD)
Like others, I have been waiting for this CD for some time. moe. is a band like Phish, the Dead, Widespread Panic, Stringcheese Incident etc. ONLY in that they are to be experienced LIVE to get what they are all about (they sound almost NOTHING like the above mentioned bands). This CD is a FANTASTIC representation of their sound and the energy they bring to the stage. You won't believe it until you hear it. The lengthy jams are NOT for the faint hearted, but if you like multi-layered, funky, spacy, funny and increadibly TIGHT jams by fearless musicians, you'll drive your neighbors crazy with this one. It is to be listened to LOUD, and unless you have a great deal of self control, not while driving fast cars! However, it's not a substitute for actually seeing them, but it's a good place to start. Pick it up....and enjoy! P.S. You can pick up the THIRD live disc (unavailable ANYWHERE else) from their web site for about $8+S&H. Also well worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars These guys are an EXCELLENT band!, September 20, 2002

I saw Moe when they opened for Robert Plant in Santa Barbara a couple of weeks ago. I had no idea what to expect. They played only 5 songs (typical for a opener), but at the end of their last song, they morphed into an 8 minute jam that just blew the audience away. During this jam, they were "in the zone," as they say. It was really a sight to behold.

I promptly read some Amazon.com reviews of their CD's. I chose "L" because reviewers gave it high marks for being a great "jam" CD.

Well, folks, I am reborn. This is the best CD I have heard in years. These guys synch like no one else. I am dumbfounded that this band is not HUGE. But, as H.L. Mencken once said, "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

If you have never heard Moe, you absolutely must. See them in concert if you can, but if that's not possible, just buy this CD. Trust me, Trust me, Trust me...You will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars FREAKING AWESOME!!!!, July 1, 2001

My roomate one day told me to put in the second disc on track 3. Since then I am a die hard moe fan. I am a big phish phan too, but these guys take it to the next level. They rock out so hard! I feel good rock songs need to progress or go somewhere, and thats what moe does. They take you to a new level of musical apreciation.

Their music is so awesome. The sound of it will make any day a great one. I listen to it on the way to class because it puts me in such a good mood. And the jams!!!! I can hardly control myself when im driving a car listening to this stuff.

Sure some songs are better than others, but these discs are gold. If you ever want some [great] music for chilling or whatever, this is it. Sure Meat was the first song i listened to, but wow is there some good stuff here. If you ever get the chance to just sit down and listen without any distractions, Timmy Tucker into Recreational Chemistry is truely epic.

Buy this cd. You will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Second disc makes it 5 star album..., May 31, 2000
This review is from: L (Audio CD)
This is a superb live effort from moe. All the songs are very representative of a good moe. show. The first disc is great, but the second one absolutely rocks to no end, making you wish there was a third disc. The jams are exceptionally well crafted and tight throughout. Even if you've never heard moe. this would be a great starting place. I would even add this 2 disc compilation to the ranks of the best live discs released over the past few years including Dave Matthews Band @ Red Rocks, Widespread Panic "Light Fuse...", and Phish's "Live One." The production and sound quality is pristine, also. All you need to do now is go to your nearest RadioShack(tm), buy all the strobe lights they have in stock, and you'll get a small feel of what a real live moe. show is like.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Supreme Live Album, December 1, 2005
By
This review is from: L (Audio CD)
This essential two disc set of live moe. music captures the feel of this band better than any of their attempts at a studio album. Their music is best suited to being played on the stage, and with this album, the band displays their superb abilities to extend any one of their songs to remarkable length, and with extraordinary levels of power and force. This is not jamband music for the weak. When I see this band perform live, my ears ring for days after; the decibel level is enormous, and the sound effects utilized can be unexpectedly piercing. But somehow the effect of the music on my future hearing is of little consequence to me during the show, since the music is being played so well, and at such an intensity, that I am fully focused on hearing everything that is being sent to me through the amplification devices.
This album captures that live intensity very well, and packages it in a very listenable manner. The song selections are very well representative of the type of music that moe. is capable of producing, making this the quintessential moe. album. For anyone that hasn't heard moe. yet, this would be the album to buy; even though I have a substantial collection of moe. to listen to, it is this album that gets played most frequently.

5.0 out of 5 stars bringin in da funky slap bass style...., October 3, 2001
By
This review is from: L (Audio CD)
Moe is nasty live and hear you get a taste of what the studio albums leave out. For example a 15 min jam and a sick and nasty version of "timmy tucker" which Rob (bass player) rips down with his 5 string that sounds like a slap of love to the bassist, and a rhythm produced like no other. Fav track: Meat

5.0 out of 5 stars The first time I heard it I was hooked, October 3, 2001
By A Customer

This CD is incredible! The first time I heard about the band moe. I was at a party and this guy told me about them. He told me to get Tincans and car tires. The store I went to didn't have it so I got this. The first song just blew me out of the water they come in with such harmonics and just burst right into one of the craziest jams I have ever heard. If you like jam bands like phish, SCI, or Ekoostic Hookah, you will love moe..

5.0 out of 5 stars OH THE INTENSITY, April 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: L (Audio CD)
Finally, moe. came out with a live album. I've yet to be let down by any of moe.'s albums but this one just blows my mind. "L" really conveys the intensity of their shows. The only things missing are the lights and everyone around you boogying down. Every song on this album is packed with energy. The pace changes in "Seat of My Pants," as well as a lot of the other songs, can keep anybody going. I strongly recomend "L" to anyone. You can't go wrong when it comes to moe. Enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars I want the real thing now!, May 20, 2000

Michael J Harrington (Phoenix, Arizona USA) - See all my reviews

Having not seen moe. live, and after hearing how this is THE band to see live, I was excited to see what it was all about. Being a moe. fan already, I was not disappointed - and it seems to me that this CD caught a lot of their live energy pretty well. I am looking forward to a live show in my neck of the woods someday!

Overall, this CD covers their material pretty well, and most studio efforts pale by comparison - they really 'get into it' on this CD, and it shows, and it sounds pretty good (coming from someone who generally hates live CD's). For the moe. fans out there that have an interest in what is beyond the studio, this CD set is IT.
