One of the largest cities in the world, and millions try to flock there annually. But if they all jumped off a bridge, would you follow? L.A. 1.0 out of 5 stars What was all the fuss about?
Sorry, the author is condescending (and without reason) and honestly...if you want to write about quirky characters, find actual quirky characters.

This book was a huge dissapointment. The style is pretty much taken from others, and not done well. The research is pretty minimal for the pieces where it pretends to impart some information to the reader, and...

Sorry, the author is condescending (and without reason) and honestly...if you want to write about quirky characters, find actual quirky characters.

This book was a huge dissapointment. The style is pretty much taken from others, and not done well. The research is pretty minimal for the pieces where it pretends to impart some information to the reader, and again...his quirky folk are not all that quirky.
I've lived in LA and San Francisco, and had more interesting weirdos around.

Also when you write about folks like this, it is best if you do it with a little care for them at the same time. From James Thurber on up to Jon Carrol, there are way too many examples of good writing, that isn't based on arrogance.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
I wanted to like it, and had intentions to like it, but when I read a ways in, found it just not interesting enough to even finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars LA Is Nuts - and a lot of fun, February 3, 2011
This review is from: L.A. Nuts: A Collection of the Cult-Hit Columns (Perfect Paperback)
LA has its share of eccentrics, off-beat characters and colorful personalities. Luckily for author Joe Dungan, they all live in his apartment building. In this Writer's Digest award winning book (where I first saw it), Dungan details the lives of this merry band in witty, fast-paced style. It is worth buying for the essays on Clyde Langtry alone, one of Joe's most odd and endearing neighbors. Beyond the funny character sketches, Dungan explores some of LA's odd and quirky landmarks...off the beaten tourist trap route and certainly far from any tour of the star's homes.

A lifelong resident, Joe's perspective on LA provides a hilarious look at the town most of us think we know. If you want real LA, this is the book.
