a long lost gem fades into obscurity...,

its a real shame that Barkmarket broke up. yeah, Dave Sardy would rather earn the big bucks by being a big name producer for Rick Rubin's American label. thats great for him, but sucks for us Barkmarket fans. and to make matters even worse, practically all of Barkmarket's catalog is out of print (including L Ron), which doesn't really make much sense. this album is one of my all-time favorites. but I'm not quite sure about the whole L Ron thing. is this meant to be a sarcastic poke, or are the Barkmarket guys really scientologists? if they are, I've lost all respect for them. but anyway, this album is the pinacle of their greatness. it rocks, its raw & primative, its cryptic, its poetic and creative, and its original. we can only guess what they could have accomplished if they made another album after this one. well, this is the age of the reunions. comebacks = $$$. maybe Sardy will come to his senses and consider the possibilities. I'm sure the other 2 guys in the band could use the money. God knows I would be happy to part with my hard earned cash for another Barkmarket album.

Essential recording of the 90's,

Emo bands Far and Will Haven cited Barkmarket as their inspirations, so I thought Barkmarket must be good. The name DAVE SARDY was mentioned a few times, and I recalled seeing this name as the engineer in the liner notes of some of my favorite albums (System of a Down, Vision of Disorder etc.). Finally found out that Sardy is the lead singer/guitarist of Barkmarket, so I decided to get "L. Ron." "L. Ron" is my personal fave of the Barkmarket albums. "Gimmick" is a great album as well, but what's so great about "L. Ron" is definitely the production. The loud crunchy guitars, bass and percussion come out perfectly in that "dirty and raw" type of way, and it's no surprise Dave Sardy is a very busy producer/engineer these days. I've never heard percussion sound this good on an album. And of course, Barkmarket write great songs. All of them are good, but "Visible Cow", "How Are You", "Lay Down" and especially "Shiner" are some of the greatest hard rock songs I've ever heard on any album. Barkmarket may have influenced the aforementioned emo bands (Even Limp Bizkit cites them as inspiration!) but they're definitely not emo, though Sardy sings and screams with strong conviction that the songs have an emotional charge about them. Great songs with the perfect production to match, Barkmarket is one of those hardly heard of bands that continue to have a huge influence on the new generation of hard rock bands. Definitely an essential recording.

Hardest *Rocking* (not metal, really) band.... of the last decade? The only thing wrong here is that they weren't hugely successful and aren't around anymore. Buy it used, stick it in, turn it up, be flabbergasted. That's all there is to it. I need special dentistry now, because I've been gnashing my teeth together while listening to this cd.

BARKMARKET- L.RON 1996- amazing song composition. fantastic lyrics and powerful vocals. Rock n? roll. Very dark. Slamin? minimalistic bass grinding and bluesy slidy noise guitar. There?s no "metal" in this record, just raw heaviness at its best. Add some crazy math and some up artwork, and a buttload of genius? MAGIC. that?s what you get. amazing. BRKMRKT?s been one of my fav?s since like 91?? they just kept getting better with each record.

excellent!I followed them since 1990 the peel session radio BBC with family cat.I air-checked only 2 songs but it was killer.I still don't know their faces but the sounds always top-quarity of the period. L-ron is bit low-fi feel session and it also agree with their essence.but no words,no explain.just try this.I guess L-ron will become your favourite.I hope the peel session will appear soon by somehow.ciao!until next release.

Ordnance + mayhem,

Yet another masterful outing from these guys. Certainly one of the hardest records ever made, and on a par with the best rock music of any era. Smart, savage, elegant. From the Duolian ringing thru the manic "Visible Cow" to the spiralling wash of "Bootless," this disc expands on previous ideas, then disassembles them. Barkmarket are not a band for the cool T-shirt crowd; they are one of the few that deserve to be played at voicecoil-popping volume, and listened to closely. "Shiner" and the beautiful "Undone" are two of the best tunes from that decade. Perhaps now their influence will be recognized...

Buy this album. This is heavy at it's best. You will have no regrets. The voices will stop. You will be able to feel your hair grow. Just buy the album. Trust an anonymous guy. It's good for you.

Created a genre of its own,
This review is from: L. Ron (Audio CD)
Barkmarket is one of those bands that was doomed for failure from the start. They created what I refer to as the musical genre known as "Warehouse/Factory Blues" or whatever you want to call it. No other band has created a soundtrack to go with existing in the squalor of inner - city life in the warehouse/ factory district of town. When you listen to L Ron you just think of these characters running the streets of any industrial city out of sight of the normal city dwellers.
Barkmarket is also one of those bands that I take great pleasure in turning other people on to. When they get that first sonic assault, they immediately want to know who this is? Where can they get some? But alas, it is too late. Now they must get their fix by listening to the bands that Sardy produces. I did get to see Barkmarket live one time, and god bless'em, they lived up to the reputation that they made for themselves through their studio. Working class, nightmare blues at full volume made by men who weren't pretty.

It was odd how I became familiar with barkmarket. I went to a charity thrift shop and the owner gave me and a friend 20 cds in a plastic bag because they were "indecent for christian listening". I will tell you most of the crap in the bag were indecent for anyone's listening, religious or not. But barkmarket caught me from the first. It is in my top 5 bands to listen to and I never get tired of it. Everytime I listen to the album I hear riffs or lyrics I never noticed before. Very enjoyable. I hope this is not their last album, it would be a shame.
