THE style,
By jason (Honolulu) - See all my reviews
This review is from: L.A. STYLE (Audio CD)
This is the pinnacle of Techno/rave. My senior year when this albumn came out, i was the only person in my school who even knew what techno was. This was a period when 2unlimited's "get ready for this" and c&c music factory was the mainstream's idea of techno. all that was pure garbage compared to the raw sounds produced by LA style. Even compared to the regurgitated ... that comes out of the music industry these days, this albumn is like stealing a halo and putting it in your cd player! If you don't own this cd, do yourself a favor and educate yourself in the fine art of music history.

Opened The Door,

I bought this on cassette on my prom night in 92',and I STILL have this cassette.Anyone can say what they want, yeah some songs are lame. But a majority of this album is great.Next to Lords of Acid(which I also purchased the very night)These guys kicked major ass. It's too bad they never produced anyhing else after this one.The "Prom-Limo",was rollin'!!!I'm an old school
club head & retired DJ,so I've played and heard my share of this band."Balloony",is one of their greatest songs.I'm pretty sure the REAL Ravers know what they are talking about.I think I'm rabbling...but this is my take on this album.I love it because it holds so many memories for me.What's weird is my date (who is now my Wife still jams to this when I play it)Classic. Stuck in the Late 80's-Early 90's? Here's a list of old school stuff you should check out. Eon-The Spice Praga Khan-Injected with a poison Front 242-Tyranny for you.."The Whole Album" I.S.H.-I.S.H. Channel X-A Million Colors Two Little Boys-ANYTHING FROM THEM Hell you could probably find these in a "Best Of Compilation" Damn I'm getting old!

One of THE classic techno/rave records of the 1990s.....,

L.A. Style weren't well known in the US. Their only "hit" was JAMES BROWN IS DEAD, and most people heard that on one of the compilations they bought. I first heard L.A. Style in 1996 on the RAVE TIL DAWN compilation, and then a friend made me a mix tape and included some other songs from them. Other songs??!?!? They had an album? I HAD to find it. Of course, this was it....and it is a CLASSIC! The music is a mix of pop/dance with a heavy hand in bass beats and electronical rhythms. The singers are really good at making you want to get up with your glowstick and rave the night away! Even though this album is now out of print, if you can get a used copy, go ahead and pay to have it! It's a must for any serious dance/techno/rave collector.

An otherwise great album flawed by one of the stupidest songs ever made,

Hailed as one of the pioneering works of the techno-rave movement, this album is a mostly solid set of fierce beats and wailing background vocals that generally do make it one of the major cornerstones of its subgenre. It's always bothered me, however, that the big hit here was "James Brown Is Dead." Between Brown still being alive at the time and that the song is not meant to be silly or comical, it kind of comes across as a mean-spirited jab at one of the great music legends of the 20th century (and which understandably prompted another techno outfit to release a song entitled "James Brown Is Still Alive" that same year). Not sure what the point of it was, but if you can get past it, the rest of the album is some great techno-rave that more than makes up for it.

This CD was what got me hooked on electronic dance music back in the 90's. I love high energy, upbeat electronic music, and since than have gotten into Trace, House, and whatever good high energy dance music is available. Definitly would recommend this CD.

Nothing else like it!,

I got this CD when it first came out back around '91 and loved almost every single song! There is no tecno I have found in recent years that even comes close to how cool these songs are! The only bad things are that this CD is out of print and that the group never released any other albums. It was one of those CDs I could never get tired of, and I have missed it ever since I let a friend borrow it and then lost track of that friend. These songs hold great memories for me. This is what tecno music should be. If you love old school forgotten classics like I do, I suggest you do whatever you have to do to get this album for yourself.

The nice thing about techno is that you can listen to a sample of a song and you've pretty much heard the whole thing and as such, I'm not going to tell you about individual songs on this album. Instead I'll just say that if you went to a few high school dances in the 90s, you probably have heard LA Style.
If you like techno or are trying to build a dance collection, then this is certainly recommended. |
