Why do I even bother...,
By
This review is from: L. A. Woman (Red Dress Ink) (Paperback)
Sigh. For some reason I always crave chick lit, but then after I've read it I'm all "Why did I just torture myself with that hunk of paper posing as a novel?"Yeah, so I had been in one of my moods for trashy chick lit and I picked this up because I found it in a closet which meant it was free. That is the exact price I would recommend paying for this book. I mean, it's not TOO terrible, especially if you are looking for something in this genre and it happens to be lying around, but I would not recommend pursuing it and paying actual money for it. It is a very trite story of mentor giving a nice sweet girl a make over and then the "student surpassing the teacher" garbage and really that plot line isn't even donethat well. The main character hasn't even done anything all that bad but suddenly Ms. Yardley is trying to convince us we should think she is a [...] who has totally succumbed to the LA lifestyle. Another huge problem I had with the book was the secondary plot thread of the main character's really uptight friend and her internet affair. I know it was supposed to be another example of a woman overcoming the tyrannical oppression of men but it was really watered down and weak. I do have one compliment for this book, but it contains spoilers so, yeah, beware. At the end the author has the main character almost fall back into her old ways and return to her ex and I just found the whole thing rather believable and it explored certain emotions really well. (I'm trying not to give too much away so I apologize for being vague). I think if she had written this event more through the main character's emotions and thought process, rather than relying on exploring it as more of an action sequence for the secondary character's, where they are desperately trying to "save the day" she might have produced something a little more special and memorable.
