Editorial Reviews

When Scottish undertaker Richard (DAVID TENNANT, TV's Dr Who, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) is smitten with beautiful American tourist Barbara (VINESSA SHAW, Two Lovers, 3:10 to Yuma, Eyes Wide Shut), he leaves his dull life behind and follows her back to Los Angeles. Thrown in at the deep end (and unable to drive), he discovers that life in Southern Calfornia is far from straightforward. A hilarious fish-out-of-water love story with some surprising guest stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Hardcore Tennant Fans Only May 3, 2010
Format:DVD
This movie is absolutely terrible, but... David Tennant, still an unknown here is, as always, fantastic. Somehow, he manages to spin gold out of manure. He's the reason I watched in the first place, and I'm happy to say that he positively dazzles. The rest of the cast, however, is nothing short of awful. The chick playing Barbara is the worst; her acting was no better than a kid in a grade school play, and she had absolutely zero charisma and not an ounce of chemistry with any of the men vying for her character's attention. Indeed, said character is vapid and unlikeable, so the viewer never quite understands why Richard (Tennant) was so taken with her in the first place. (Obviously, the films's screenwriters were responsible for that.)

Bottom line: LA Without a Map is the kind of film only hardcore David Tennant fans, like myself, could enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your run of the mill comedy December 15, 2009
Format:DVD
LA without a Map is not your run of the mill comedy, that's for sure, but well worth the trip. David Tennant (Dr. Who) plays a mortician who journeys from the Midlands of England to the huge metropolis which seems totally upside down as he searches for a girl who just showed up in his cemetery one dismal afternoon. Needless to say, the girl is abhorred by the arrival of the naive and pining loser. However he is not to be put off by her total dismissal and sets out to win her over with the help of his hero, Johnny Depp who silently and humorously advises from the confines of a poster from the movie "Dead Man." Tennant's unfortunate encounters with Los Angeles and its colorful inhabitants make for a hilarious journey toward his goal. Even though it seems the hero would finally end up with the girl, it falls apart and he seeks wisdom in the visage of a ghostly figure in the local cemetery... who looks all too familiar. Anouk Amiee and the real Johnny Depp make a surprise appearance at the end. Good film for any admirers of David Tennant, Victoria Shaw or Johnny Depp. My version came in Region 2/PAL.

4.0 out of 5 stars David Tennant is the bright spot in this movie October 22, 2013
By K. Wood
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I actually purchased this movie BECAUSE David Tennant was in it. He does not disappoint. It does provide an outsider's view of life in LA from either a foreigner's view point, or even a rural American's view. The rest of the movie is a bit slow at points and tends to meander. David's performance (maybe it is the accent) is the shining spot in the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars I liked it.. December 26, 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I had been wanting to buy this movie ever since I had heard of it coming out in Reigon 1 DVD format from the David Tennant website. It's not your regular slapstick comedy you usually get in the United States around that time but if you like movies like Juno I would say go a head and watch it. In my opinion the acting was really good and the realness of the characters really brought it out. The plot line is a tad cliched but not to the point where it would be the same old thing...

Awkward at times but overall okay film. I would suggest renting it first before going out and spending the money to purchase it

2.0 out of 5 stars From a Tennant fan too May 28, 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Sadly, I say avoid this one. The plot is rather strange, and Tennant doesn't have the complete character he usually brings to a performance. There's a reason this one came earlier in his career. It showed. I usually appreciate his characters, even if they're villains, and I don't give him the benefit of the doubt. He's just that good. I couldn't like him here, and that's depressing.

1.0 out of 5 stars If I could have given it no stars, that would have been my choice
Waste of my money. As a matter of fact I can't even remember what it was about. Maybe someday I'll wonder if I've seen it and watch it again. Fat chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good movie
A good lighthearted comedy that's worth seeing. David Tennant is very good as he tries to survive LA. Johnny Depp also has a cameo.

I love David Tennant, but this was a terrible movie. Too much language. I didn't even finish it. Thumbs down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute
It was cute, by the numbers, but nothing too exciting. David Tennant is as charming as ever. Good supporting cast. Writing was just weak.
