As babies reach the 6-month-old mark, their ability to explore and control their environment begins to unfold. This means the old toys just don't cut it any more; interactivity is the name of the game now. Lamaze's Discovery Book is a great place to start. It's soft and safe, and very washable (and at this point, you'll probably appreciate a toy that actually absorbs saliva). There's a lot for baby to do, see, and discover--a ladybug hiding under a tree-shaped flap of green felt, or a sun under a nubby white-cloth "cloud." The book is sturdily constructed: each of the four, double-sided, 6-inch-square, cloth pages has reinforced edges. There is no text, so you and baby can play together making up stories about the pictures, which are of common objects. This activity is also a good way to start teaching basic words such as "cat," "flower," and "fish." Baby can practice hand-eye coordination turning the pages and lifting the flaps to reveal what's underneath. My baby has loved this book since she was 4 months old! It's soft fabric and bright colors really appeal to her. It also encourages talking to baby - what's under the star? The moon! It's very interactive. Right now my daughter loves putting everything in her mouth, and this book is perfect for that. It washes up great in the washing machine. Still looks brand new even though it is used all the time, and has been washed. I would highly recommend it!

This book REALLY appeals to little ones and you cannot beat the price! It has lasted through three boys and still looks new after more than a few trips through the laundry.

We bought this book for our daughter when she was 3 months old. We would talk through it with her and lift the flaps playing "there it is!" It was a matter of minutes before she could lift the flaps and a matter of days before she was turning the pages. The book has gone to church, restaurants, practically everywhere with us. It can also be thrown into the washing machine! Our daughter is 10 months old now and the book is an old favorite. I think she finds comfort in knowing that it's her "old" book that has been with her for so long. A must! A great gift, too!
