Book Description

Andy Moralee is no longer the young and terrified recruit who had last set foot upon New Earth two years ago. Decorated for his bravery during the final hours of the invasion and promoted to lance corporal, he is still troubled by his memories and haunted by nightmares. He finds himself unable to cope with life back on Earth, and so he returns to the red planet, the only place where he feels he belongs.

But New Earth has changed as well. A growing insurgency threatens to turn the planet into a battleground once again, but this time the enemy has the ability to melt away into the population, and even turn the Union's weapons against them. Nobody can be trusted, even old friends.

Quickly swept up in the gathering storm Andy finds himself in the command of a section that resents his early promotion, and during the battle that follows his leadership, his loyalty, and even his faith in his comrades are put to the ultimate test in the face of an enemy that will stop at nothing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy Sequel May 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mr. Richards has continued the story of dropship trooper Andy Moralee, now promoted to "lancejack", which apparently is something like a sub-corporal, and returned to New Earth. This time around, he is less inside his own head with his fears and doubts (a particular strength of CROW), and more in control of his tactical decisions, which are very good.

"Lancejack" is far more story-driven, but I will not reveal any of it except to say that it involves old friends, and again contains some fine small unit combat scenes.

There is at least one more story coming, and I suspect that the continued professional and personal growth of Moralee will make this series better than its parts, which aren't too bad. I'll keep reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book May 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is becoming a great series. I enjoyed this book just as much as C.R.O.W. I have to say I liked the transition to a more modern battlefield in this book. The introduction of Insurgency tactics and EW was a great addition(I am a Signals guy so I may be biased). This book highlights the complexity of modern warfare by someone who has been there. I am looking forward to Eden!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome May 13, 2013

Just like crow, this book will not disappoint. It's gritty and mature for a science fiction novel, not at all trite and unrealistic. The author really knows his stuff, the characters are dynamic, there are no cliches or stereotypes. There's none of the usual half-baked asinine banter that makes a lot of mil-sci-fi read like a bunch of 14 year old gamers wrote the dialog. I have a new favorite military sci-fi author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lancejack April 22, 2013

This book picks up about two years after the end of CROW, the first book on this series. After attending "Junior Leader" training (I guess NCO), Andy Moralee returns to New Earth. Almost from the outset, you sense that something in him has changed, and as the story progresses, the tone of this book turns a bit darker than previous.

I really don't want to say too much without giving away any spoilers, but I read 90% of this book in a single sitting. Every time I tried to put it down, I kept getting drawn to read more, and would have finished if I didn't have to sleep.

The narrative is still a bit rough, but less so than the first book. Even so, it works. I did spot a few editing errors. One thing which stands out, which may (or may not) be British versus American usage of quotes, where a character is speaking across multiple paragraphs. I am used to the terminal quote being omitted as a visual clue that the same character is continuing dialogue, but the initial quote on the next paragraph being present. Here, the initial quote was always missing as well.

Either way, hopefully you'll find yourself engrossed in the story, where the author has shown a clear talent for projecting a characters grief, anger, and a whole range of other emotions. I would certainly like to read more of the story.

Even though I really liked the first book. This one was ten times better. The writing was more mature. It filled out the story better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the give-up April 26, 2013

Couldn't put the latest book down. Gave up a day of turkey hunting to finish it. Small promotions and not great leaps in responsibility, yet the author weaves an extremely intriguing, character driven space opera. Can't wait for the next installment.

Having been in the Military, I found a lot in common with the Basic training and combat training of this book. I was so wrapped up in the action and could not put it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars good step in the series
It's a good progression of the main character. One especially good author trait is the treatment of people as more complex and adaptable, or influenced by change. Read more

More About the Author

I was born in Chichester, southern England. Not long after my seventeenth birthday I signed up to join the British Army, opting for service within the infantry. Since then I have served my country for thirteen years, completing a series of tours in Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Iraq, Afghanistan and instructing at an infantry training centre in northern England. I am now an infantry platoon sergeant, and spend my free time- when I get it- pursuing my childhood passion, writing science fiction.

In light of the positive response to my first two ebooks, I have recently completed and published a third! EDEN is the follow up to LANCEJACK, and takes Andy Moralee to a new world where enemies lurk around every corner...

You can follow me on twitter @PhilAuthor for updates on the production of future titles, as well as hearing me moan about the ups and downs of life as a Platoon Sergeant!
