still fussing with it,
By woodworker (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: LASERKERF II For Standard Kerf Blades With Bracket Set (Misc.)
I do a lot of crown moulding work, and I got a dual compound sliding miter saw by Makita so that I don't have to flip the long pieces around or move my saw every few cuts. I love it except I got tired of lifting the blade guard out of the way to line up my cuts, so I started looking for a laser for it. I wanted something that showed both edges of the blade because some of my cuts were waste on the left . . . you get the idea. I liked the fact that they now ship an assortment of wedges and brackets with the unit, so it should fit just about any saw. Some people complain that the light projected on the work is hard to see in bright sunlight, and it could be true, I haven't used it outside yet. They now ship both the plug-in power supply and the battery pack with the Laserkerf, and I appreciate that.
I wish I could say that setup was a snap, but it wasn't for me. The instructions have you make a jig from a couple pieces of wood, clamp it in place and make a partial cut through both pieces in such a way that when the laser is properly lined up it shines through the back piece and along the cut line. I found that easier said than done, and my laser line was off by about 1/32" past maximum adjustment. I then found that when placed like the instructions say, on my saw the laser unit is able to come in contact with the fence when set for right 45deg. and full forward. This caused the unit to twist on the adhesive mounts and get way out of line. They talk like the adhesive will grab and lock things tight after a few days, but I didn't find that to be the case. I got a razor blade and started to carefully slice the adhesive loose, then found that I could peel it off even though it had been on a week and was supposed to be permanent (yes, I had cleaned that area of the saw with solvents like they said to). I remounted it and messed up again, this time even worse. I've got enough tape left (thank you for sending extra, by the way) for one more try. The unit allows for two adjustments after installation- one rotates the laser from the vertical in case the mounting surface is not level left to right, and the other slides the laser slightly left and right. When you stick the tape it has to be pointing perfectly parallel with the saw blade, because there is no adjustment for out of parallel. I'm going to try getting it right one more time and hope that the foam double stick tape will keep things right. Maybe going around the base with some epoxy putty would help, I don't know. If your saw is not a sliding type, I think you will have a much easier time of it. I would think I had things lined up until I pulled the blade toward me and watched the line move away from the cut- frustrating. One other thing about this laser line is that it comes from behind the blade, so it shows up fine on a flat board but only lights the back side of contour mouldings- not so bad on standard crown but chair rail and base cap are worse, making it harder to line up the cut (your pencil mark has to be on a lit area). Bottom line is that I haven't given up on trying to use this product, but it isn't everything I hoped it would be. Still, I think it's reasonably priced and has potential, just be patient and exacting when you install it. Okay, a month later and I got the thing reinstalled and it went well. I'm now pretty happy with it- it looks like no laser line accessory is perfect. Cutting miters I either mark the short point or the long point (never the middle of the board), so the marks are on the front edge where sometimes the line is shadowed. I have now used it outdoors and can say that yes, it is not much use in bright ambient light. I still think I prefer this design to the disc type that mounts beside the blade.

I install the laser on my Bosch 12" slide and it works great. The directions were easy to follow and the set up was easy to do. This made cutting on either side of the blade a breeze. I really like the ability to turn it on without having to start the saw.
