Product Description

LOVE! ROMANCE! DRAMA!

If you love passionate can’t-put-it-down historical fiction, you will love Ruth Harris’s THE LAST ROMANTICS (20th Century Series, Book #5).

A passionate and sweeping historical romance set in the glittering capitals of Paris and New York in the 1920's, THE LAST ROMANTICS is about the larger-than-life men and women who created the art, the styles, the fashions, the attitudes that would define the 20th Century.

Kim Hendricks is American, a legendary war reporter and celebrated novelist, a daring big game hunter, glamorous and romantic, but dangerously flawed.

Nicole Redon is French, a talented fashion designer whose shocking designs influence women around the world. She is beautiful, charming, lonely, haunted.

Kim confronts a devastating tragedy. Nicole guards a desperate secret. They meet by chance and pursue their star-crossed romance in New York and Paris, on safari in Africa, in glamorous resorts on the French Riviera and the savage blood-drenched front lines of two world wars.

“Great Book! A first-rate love story. Harris skillfully weaves fact with fiction in the creation of this tale of love, loss, success, failure, war and peace. If you're looking to bury yourself in a big historical novel full of larger-than-life characters, this is the one.” —Customer Review

Where to start? At the end - the end of World War I, that is. That's when Kim Hendricks, American hero and legendary war reporter, meets Nicole Redon, a gifted fashion designer determined to create clothing women will love to wear, in a celebration-crazed Paris. They spend several weeks together exploring the City of Lights and each other before Kim must return to America. This is where Kim's courage escapes him. He doesn't tell Nicole he's engaged to be married; he simply promises he'll return.

Kim does return a few years later, and against her better judgment, Nicole takes him back. By now he's a best-selling novelist and she's the toast of the fashion world thanks to the simple elegance of her designs. Kim is also married. Nicole has never married, though she's come close, and she easily falls into the role of his mistress. From Paris to New York to Africa to the French Riviera, through the Roaring Twenties, the stock market crash and the Dirty Thirties, they pursue a romance that sets the world abuzz. The book ends at the beginning of World War II in Europe, when Kim's courage returns in full force. He goes back to his reporting and pursues the Nazis with a vengeance, while Nicole lives in abject fear for his safety.

Harris skillfully weaves fact with fiction in the creation of this tale of love, loss, success, failure, war and peace. If you're looking to bury yourself in a big old historical novel full of larger-than-life characters, this is the one.

The Last Romantics is a nice summer read - not terribly "heavy" - but certainly interesting. The author, Ruth Harris, seamlessly weaves real life historical and literary figures into the story of McKim (Kim) Hendricks and Nicole Redon. However, I would personally classify this novel under historical fiction rather than historical romance. The story is not so much the typical romance story, so if you are looking for the "happily ever after" type of novel for your summer reading, this might not be your first choice. If you want a good story set in history, however, this would be a good choice to fill that wish.

Kim and Nicole are two seemingly star-crossed lovers, first meeting in Paris in 1918 when Kim is there writing, shortly before his first marriage. Of course, Kim returns home to New York, marries the woman he is expected to, but is still remembering Nicole, his "last bachelor fling". The story continues on going between Paris and New York from 1918 through the Second World War, with a brief epilogue going through to the 1970s. I found myself disliking the character of Kim quite a bit. He is clearly mentally ill (possibly bi-polar due to his outbursts and high highs and low lows). He also does something rather strange in finding a woman who looks like Nicole, then going back to Nicole again, only to leave Nicole and return to New York to end up marrying his second wife, the Nicole look-alike.

I found myself hoping Nicole was going to find "better" - I really liked her character, and I loved reading about the fashion designs and her design business. She was definitely the better written of the two main characters in my opinion. I was hoping for the "happy ending" for her, and was actually quite disappointed that she did not get it, even in the epilogue.

When I first started reading this book, I was impressed by the history; the immersion of real literary and historical people that surrounded the 2 main characters. The backdrop was painted in vivid colors and painstaking detail, almost to a fault.

However, there were many times that I had to force myself to pick the book up to finish the story. It was a difficult read because of the over embellishment of the background, similar to Fitzgerald (maybe that was the ironic point, due to his cameo appearances). Many times I found myself wanting to know more about the supporting characters, wanting more depth and complexity of the people, rather than the places. I wanted to root for the 2 main characters, and I found that I did not care, even up to the ending that I saw coming. Although, on the positive side, the most interesting part for me was the depiction of fashion and the creative process for the female main character, Nicole.

Personally, I like easy reads that sweep you through the story and make it impossible for you to keep from becoming a part of it. And for me, this was not it. Overall, this book may appeal to people who love classic literature and can't get enough of the beauty of words themselves.
