From Publishers Weekly
Owing to the "longevity revolution," the breakup of families and permissive social attitudes, many widows and widowers remarry, observes thrice-married psychotherapist Simpson (Poets in Their Youth). Her "descriptive and reflective rather than statistical or scientific" study is based on interviews with 50 mostly middle-class Eastern seaboard couples-a few as old as 90-who remarried after age 55. Simpson recounts the often moving stories of her subjects, some of whom resumed a lost love after 35 or 40 years. She probes the emotional, sexual and practical aspects of remarriage, including relations with adult children who oppose the union. Simpson wisely distinguishes between the "generative" love of a young couple and late, "existential" love, "which reflects a poignant awareness that all life is transient [and]... we can no longer deny our mortality.'.

From Library Journal
New York psychotherapist and writer Simpson seems to cover every possible aspect of marrying after 50. Using information gained by interviewing 50 people who married or remarried late in life, she carefully outlines the joys and possible pitfalls of such late marriages. Chapters cover such diverse topics as money concerns, problems with adult children, sexual issues, and difficulties in adjusting to living with another person's 50-plus years of habits and belongings. Culled from Simpson's interviews and from literature, anecdotes detailing these problems constitute a major portion of this book. Simpson does not, however, simply give readers a list of potential problems; she also gives many examples of people who have successfully dealt with the issues. The evidence she presents shows that it's certainly possible to have a successful marriage later in life. This optimistic view will reassure those considering marriage and their loved ones and should make the title popular in public libraries.
