4.0 out of 5 stars the lover, July 18, 2000

Like most of his work Gabriel Yared manges to convey a number of moods in this orchestral score that he wrote for the movie the lover (or L'Amant in french). The soundscapes he paints here are very evocative and for anyone who liked the movie you will most certainly like the music that goes so well with it.

A great disc, with a great sound. I recently wrote to Mr. Yared (via his website) and he actually wrote back to me (from France!). I questioned him on the Chopin-like nocturne at the end of the movie (where our young lover finally gives vent to her emotions). I asked him which Chopin nocturne was being used in the film, and he replied that "it was mine - with a Chopin-like feel to it." I was impressed with the fact that he was paying homage to Chopin with that work! Nice guy! Great talent! Great disc! Five stars!

(07-15-2006: An update to my Novenber 18, 2005 review - After 13 years of watching "The Lover" based on Marguerite Dumas's non-fictional account of her affair with an gentleman of Asian extraction, I have finally found the music to which our young French girl surrends her tears (at the end of the movie!) The music is Chopin's Waltz in B Minor, Opus 69, No. 2!! Ashkenazy's rendition is just icing on the cake!! Still Five stars!!))

5.0 out of 5 stars By far Yared's best work, November 19, 2004

Why is it, that a composer's best composition is usually for obscure or underrated films... Like Ennio Morricone's The Mission, the movie was not at all a succes - the music is brilliant. The theme of this movie L'amant, is gorgeous, subtle and undoubtedly made by a musical genius. His later work, like the scores for Cold Mountain, the English Patient and City of Angels, is not quite as excellent, but has proven that Gabriel Yared is recognised, as one of the best contemporary composers alive today.

This album is a must-have.

Its a good score, with a main tittle really beautyfull. But I still think that the Gabriel Yared's best work is "The English Patient".
