5.0 out of 5 stars Master of the guitar January 14, 2008
Format:Audio CD
Alexandre Lagoya (1929-99) was already a fine guitarist in his own right when he met and married Ida Presti, the best female guitarist of the 20th century, and probably of all time. Together they formed what has been called the greatest duo in the history of the classical guitar. They were to the duo what Segovia was to the solo instrument: they innovated technically and musically and made something like fifteen world tours, inspiring nearly all the best modern composers to write for the medium, while at the same time generating an entire new body of transcriptions from instruments such as the harpsichord. They also inspired and taught several other duos who are now among the best in the World, including Ako Ito & Henri Dorigny and the Athenian Duo (Evangelos & Liza). Their fame and impact were still accelerating when, on a tour of the United States in 1967, Ida Presti was taken suddenly ill and died. She was forty-two.

Presti/Lagoya's early recordings were on French RCA, and these were issued as a 2-CD boxed set (in 1995, 7 43212 58662), quickly deleted*. However, the sound quality was mediocre, and many of the tracks were re-recorded for Philips.

The complete Philips recordings in turn were issued on a 3-CD boxed set. That set, too, is now deleted; but, it is (happily) completely subsumed by the present album.

The Presti/Lagoya recordings are some of the most brilliant classical guitar music ever put together.

For anyone who is a fan of classical guitar music, this collection is simply a must-have. Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya are the unsung heroes of the classical guitar world. Their virtuosity, uncomparable skill and taste are unmatched in the realms of guitardom. My introduction to this amazing duo came in the form of an old vinyl record I got my hands on as a kid. "Music For the Classic Guitar" (Nonesuch Label, Catalog H-71161). I played that record until the stylus had worn out the grooves. Imagine my surprise when I came upon this collection! Ida Presti was a child prodigy, trained by her father and tutored in guitar by Andres Segovia. At the age of 13 Segovia released her, telling her father "I can teach this child no more". She married fellow guitarist Alexandre Lagoya and they began performing concerts all over the world. Although Presti met an untimely death in 1967, Lagoya carried on with a solo career until his passing in 1999. As a duo they arranged classical peices by Bach, Scarlatti, Granados, Marella and Debussy into magical guitar pieces. Their entire recording history is contained in this set and is accompanied by excellent and thorough liner notes. Their performance of Debussy's "Clair de lune" is still the most memorable that I have heard. If you are a fan of Segovia, Parkening, Williams, Bream, et al you will enjoy this collection and may just move Presti and Lagoya to the top of your classical guitarist list.

Eight hours of pure greatness! the remastered sound is outstanding. No need to add more words, if you're even a bit interested, you must buy this.

The package is simple, 6 sleeves for each CD, and a booklet in French and English; all within the cardboard box.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection December 30, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
For years, we have waited for Nonesuch to issue its LP/audiotape of Lagoya and Presti duets in CD format, but all of those collaborations and more are included in this 6 CD set. Lagoya and Presti were both innovators in guitar playing, and it's wonderful to have these recordings available at a very reasonable price.
