5.0 out of 5 stars Le parfum sucre de vos roses s'evapore
Mylene and her musical collaborator Laurent shift gears slightly. With the exception of "Pas de doute" and the super-catchy single hit "Desenchantee", they're obviously no longer interested in producing items for the dancefloor. 3.0 out of 5 stars With all due respect..
Well produced, with some fine in studio work, if you are inclined to a slow melodic, romantic, euro / disco mood, vaguely reminiscent of a gay bar in the 70's,or dark wet french street at 3 A.M, with little diversion in tempo or tonal variation between cuts, aside from techno background creations in seemingly every orchestrational format, which seem to key this album, aside...

Mylene and her musical collaborator Laurent shift gears slightly. With the exception of "Pas de doute" and the super-catchy single hit "Desenchantee", they're obviously no longer interested in producing items for the dancefloor. Instead, "L'autre" is a concept album which fuses new age sensibilities and ambient sounds (similar to the highly successful Enigma) with traditional French chanson ("Je t'aime melancolie") and downtempo, mighty ballads ("Agnus Dei", "L'autre", "Regrets"). Fans of Mylene's earlier, club-oriented songs could be disappointed, but the integrity and consistency of this album is impressive. Lyrics are even darker and more personal than on previous albums, and together with the transparent, thrilling musical backing, it's a great body of work. There's nothing else quite like this in music, so a five-star rating is justified. I used to listen to "L'autre" when I was reading Stephen King's book "It", and it made the story even more intense and frightening. It's just Mylene's best album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, January 6, 2000

It's very hard to say something about music and videos of Mylene Farmer. To understand why you have to hear and to see. She is, to my opinion, one of the brightest stars in the sky of the modern pop universe. Almost every her song (and not only on this CD) is really what heaps of space dust around can only dream of. And this fact makes me very sad. She creates a music only a few in the world can create, but is almost unknown outside Europe. She is often called 'a French Madonna' and I'm quite sure if she sang in English, she would be known worldwide not less than Madonna. She is one of the best artists ever in euro-pop style and she is definitely one the best French singers of all times.

4.0 out of 5 stars not her best, but better than anyone else's, April 26, 2003

I don't agree with Mr. Turk about L'AUTRE being similar to Enigma -- except in the sense that Farmer & Boutonnat have taken back FROM Enigma the sound that Enigma took from Farmer's previous CD, AINSI SOIT-JE ("L;horloge" especially). I don't agree with Mr. Lukasziewicz that this is Farmer's best CD : AINSI SOIT-JE has a richer palette of subject matter, ANAMORPHOSEE has better songs, and INNAMORAMENTO has better everything. Still, who else out there has a song as scary -- yet rhythmic -- as "Psychiatric," or an art-rock Eurodisco ennui song as encompassing as "Desenchantee"? (recently covered, incredibly, by Irish chanteuse Kate Ryan -- amazing!) As for the downbeat, darkly orchestrated ballads in which this CD indulges, they're simply the best that "Goth" has to offer -- far profounder, darker, and more deterministic and lush than any of the predictable Nordic stuff that aspires to EBM/darkside stardom. Mylene is a unique artist, the most influential French variete performer in the world -- and L'AUTRE has much to offer;' but now go listen to INNAMORENTO -- not to mention the fantastic, recent songs she's done : "C'est une belle journee," "Effets seconfaires," "L'histoire d'une fee," "Pardonne-moi." If you wanna hear "best," these are they!

5.0 out of 5 stars Air, Feeling, Heart, April 20, 1999

Unfortunantely (or maybe it's good) I cannot French and don't understand the lyrics. I can only receive this music by my soul and imagination. It makes me feel lot of air and space and dreaming about warm feelings. Some of these songs (like "Il N Y A Pas D Ailleurs") make me feel calm and very sad.... It's definitely worth to listen, even if you're not a fan of French music. I like 8 titles out of 10 !

Eat your hearts out! This CD came free with a job lot of cassettes I bought and when I first played it I was stunned by the quality of the music. Picture a peaceful evening, the lights down low and the company of your special partner. Press the play button and sink into the depths of the pulsating bass and haunting vocal talents of Mylene as she transports you to a new level of exquisite sensual delight!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a cd!, July 2, 1998

This cd is full of the kind of music that countless dance groups have only dreamed of. Mylene's dance beats and sounds are all very refreshing and great to listen to (Even though this album was made in 91'!). Additionally, her soft voice blends well with the music. All of her songs are sung in French, but her moods and intentions are all universal. I really reccomend this cd for there is so much to offer!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff, beautiful voice, September 6, 2000

My friend got me too listen to Mylene first. I was reluctant, having never been a francopile, and having recoiled in cringing horror at most euro-pop I'd heard. Mylene's pieces however are different, often seeming to be colored with a very genuine sense of melancholy. Mylene has a very beautiful and versatile voice, and most of the songs are very pleasing. I could, however, do without Psychiatric and Beyond My Control. It's a personal taste thing, and this is a personal review. Maybe I'm being a little stingy with 4 stars... I'd rate it 9 of 10, were that an option. But it's not, and I'm therefore saving a rating of 5 for those albums that border upon absolute perfetion... a personal thing, again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un fan desde España, May 3, 1999

I got this as a cassette nine years ago from a friend who brought it back from France. I can't believe I found it, you have to have it in your collection if you like rich, enchanting music with lofty, sexy vocals. Buy two of them, you'll wish you had it when you can't find it anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Haunting Track, July 15, 1998
By A Customer

In the "tradition" of Enigma and Enya, this CD is haunting and incredible. Her voice is that of an angel, super-imposed over some great tracks of musics. If you like Enigma, Deep Forest and/or Enya you will definitely appreciate Mylene Farmer
