Outstanding story of the Texas White House, October 3, 2011
This review is from: LBJ's Texas White House: "Our Heart's Home." (Hardcover)
This is a great book that is a MUST read for anyone interested in the story of President Lyndon B. Johnson. Hal Rothman does an excellent job of the history of this historic house and how it relates to LBJ. This was what LBJ and Ladybird Johnson called "The Heart's Home". This house saw many historic events from the "Cabinet Oak" which is a 400 plus year old Texas Live Oak tree that President Johnson held his cabinet meetings under such as the escalation of the war in Vietnam was made under this tree. President Johnson held many LBJ Barbeques in the front lawn and many world leaders were entertained in this house. Presidents Kennedy, Truman, Nixon visited or stayed here at one time or another. LBJ used this home as a retreat and the author describes these "retreats" during the ups and downs of the life of LBJ. The history of the house that was originally built around 1894 is an interesting read. LBJ purchased this house in 1950 and had it expanded throughout his lifetime. LBJ also used this house as a political choice of opportunity when he invited various world leaders to stay here and relax. The author does an accurate and thorough job in describing the relationship of LBJ and this house. This is where LBJ came to retire and eventually passaway after leaving the Presidency in 1969. As stated before this is a book that truely is a MUST read to any LBJ enthusiast or historian and would make a fine addition to any Presidential Historians bookshelf. HIGHLY Recommended!!
