Pros: - This keeps long hair out of the drain.
Marc Kennedy
The holes are big enough for the water to drain easily but not so big that hair gets through.
J. S.
Tried to open some of them but after 20 minutes threw it away in disgust.

I have bought this type at the dollar store but it did not fit. The basket was too small, could not use at all. I have tried others, checked my neighborhood hardware stores to no avail. They did not fit. I was using one with the top cut out because it was too low, the basket sides caught the hair. The spec measurements bear no relationship to the product. I saw some measurements on another website which I do not remember and decided to try this. THIS ONE FIT was able to cover my popup. Approximate measurements of the basket 1" high, basket top diameter 2 1/8", open basket base diameter 2 1/8", outside diameter which is not important is 5". Most important is that the basket can cover the popup. This one does.

I've been using these types of hair catchers for years and they do an excellent job of keeping 90% of the hair from going down the drain. You still have to clean out the drain now and then but much less frequently.

Let me address some of the user complaints. All can easily be solved with a tiny bit in ingenuity:

1. "won't fit inside the hole in my drain" Hellooo. It's not designed for that. You are supposed to place it OVER the hole. If you want something to go inside the hole get a different model.

2."too small fit over my pop up drain." The top of most pop up drains should easily unscrew. Simply remove it. You can screw it back on when you want to take a bath. Some users just cut off the top to help it fit their drain cover These catchers will fit pretty much any tub or sink drain. The flange is soft flexible plastic that can be cut on one side if it's a bit too wide to fit snugly on the wall side of your sink or tub.

3. "it catches the hair but then the water won't drain and the tub starts to fill up." If this happens while you are showering all you have to do is remove the hair, rinse off the soap, and plop it on an edge of the tub until you are finished showering. Needless to say, all hair should be removed after each shower.

4. "it gets all gunked up and mildewed" Right before you turn off the shower water and before removing the hair, kick or spray clean water on it to remove the soap. After disposing of the hair remove the catcher from the drain and invert it on the floor of the tub. This will air out the catcher and your drain, and retard mildew. Sooner or later it will probably get a bit of mildew, just like everything else in the shower.

I tried two other (more expensive) hair catchers before I decided to go with this one. The other ones let hair slip underneath. This one doesn't let any hair slip underneath. It does cause a bit of a backup with draining water, but I'd rather that happen than my hair go down the drain.

Although this type may not work for ALL drain types, for those it does fit over, it does prevent hair from going down the drain and thus, less of a headache. Not complete elinmination of har going down but considerably LESS is going down.

Worth the investment

I'd like to rate this no stars. If a metal die is used at the factory to punch out the holes on this device, the rims have dulled over time and the holes are so small on about half of the diameter that no water can flow through and you end up standing in a puddle. The hole punch pattern depicted in the photo doesn't go around the complete circumference. I think if it did, it would work just fine, but with half the holes still filled solid with white plastic, it's useless for all but bald people taking short showers.

I was afraid this would prove useless because it sits over the drain rather than in it.
I've been pleasantly surprised that it pretty much stays put and does it's job very well.
An inexpensive solution to help prevent the problem of hair clogged drains.

Plain and simple, this worked. I have one of those pop-up drains in the shower, and with my wife's long hair and all the conditioner she uses, I was having to use those chemicals (that get super hot on contact with liquid and literally burn away your clogs) every other month. After a while I just got sick of putting on the gloves, goggles, mask, etc., wiping away all the standing water, using the chemicals, and then not using the shower overnight before pouring more hot water down the drain in the morning.

So off I went in search of something that would catch hair at the drain. Let me tell you, it was not easy. I searched online, the local hardware stores, Bed Bath & Beyond ... you name it. I tried using a kitchen sink drain protector that's shaped like a half-sphere by turning it upside down over the stopper. While it was big enough, too much hair was sneaking through under the edges because of the minimal surface area at the point of contact with the tub.

I was skeptical that this plastic drain protector would fit much less work, so imagine my surprise when it did both! It barely fit, but hey, even better. Why no fifth star? Well, after a while the plastic -- and especially the small drain holes -- will get clogged with hair products and mold, and you will have to clean it out. I just use an old tooth brush, but the process is pretty gross.

In the future I just think I'll buy a new one or two whenever I need to get over $25 on my order for free super saver shipping.
