Book Description

May 2001
LEARN is a book of strategies to enhance a student's learning, through use of playful yet effective multisensory teaching techniques. The strategies are appropriate for a variety of school age students and can be used by parents or teachers. Older students may be able to adapt many of the strategies independently. LEARN is an acronym for Learning Efficiently And Remembering mNemonics. Why mnemonics? Because mnemonics are a group of learning strategies that help capture information for storage and retrieval. Because mnemonics stimulate spatial and simultaneous strategies and can integrate them with more sequential strategies. Because mnemonics have a pattern, a critical component for successful recall. Because many children can learn silly mnemonic sentences or pictures just as easily as they learn commercials and jingles.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

After the popularity of the first edition of LEARN, this publication was developed to expand and enhance that philosophy of learning. The author has acquired more techniques and has refined many of the methods used. This second edition describes many of the same techniques, but also adds others. There is more emphasis on multisensory strategies and development of independent learning. The first chapter discusses similarities among some of the common learning philosophies, including:

...learners learn in different ways: we are not all the same
...presenting information in a verbal, lecture format is only one of many possible ways to present information
...some learners need hooks, like strips of Velcro, to capture the concepts or facts to be learned
...organizing information within a system or a pattern helps consolidate learning

The reader will develop an understanding of using a student's learning strengths and will have strategies that can be used with the general education population, as well as students who learning differently, including those with dyslexia or dysgraphia.

From the Author

My goal in developing this second edition of LEARN was to expand upon the philosophy of the first edition while continuing the concept that all students learn differently. It is up to us as teachers and parents to help students find their own key to learning, so that they can develop the independence in learning that helps generate success throughout all of life's learning tasks. My hope is that the teachers, parents and students using LEARN will have fun with the strategies while developing techniques that will enhance the efficiency of their learning.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real gem!, December 6, 2007
This review is from: LEARN : Playful Strategies for All Students (Paperback)
This little book is a real gem. It is an outstanding resource for both teachers and parents. Each chapter is filled with practical ideas and strategies presented in the form of short paragraphs, easy to read lists, and simple illustrations that really help explain important points. Each chapter also provides extensive references for further reading, making this book an excellent reference guide, as well. I am an Educational Therapist in private practice and I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in helping children become more successful in school.
