Book Description

Twelve-year-old CHARLIE DAVIS wishes for a father to help him with his delinquent younger brother, MANNY, who may not survive.

Poof! magic happens. THE FOX, a 19th century hero he saw in a movie on TV, appears in his bedroom the next morning and tells him he'll teach him to be a man.

Adventures speed by. Charlie can’t believe it, but the more The Fox shows Charlie how to help his baby brother, get rid of his mother's boozing and abusive boyfriend, and how to scare off thieves and win rewards from grateful shop owners, the more Charlie starts to believe it’s all true.

Charlie becomes a hero and gets a reputation in the neighborhood as a helpful kid. He's embarrassed by the attention and doesn't know how to handle it. Little by little, he starts calling himself The Fox, and dresses like him, too. When Charlie catches his brother with a stolen bike, he wants to "kick his ass," but fights against his natural inclination when the Fox shows him how to find out who gave Manny the bike and how to return it to its rightful owner.

At school, coached by The Fox, he shows his friends how to get rid of bullies. When he gives a book report on a book about The Fox, the kids laugh at him because he talks about the hero as if he's still alive. When he shows them how The Fox fenced and swung between roofs, they applaud him.

Boys in the neighborhood start to dress like Charlie and salute him as The Fox. One of the town bullies tells him they have his brother and will beat him to a pulp unless Charlie comes with them. He goes to meet with the bullies, but sees he's outnumbered four to one. The Fox appears and so do all the neighborhood boys who've been dressing like the Fox. They're marching and shouting, "The Fox, The Fox." The bullies turn and run and Manny is saved.

But not all goes well. While shopping in a grocery store, Charlie stops a young boy from stealing candy and as a result, meets the boy's sister, GLORIA, and they become friends. The Fox teaches Charlie to dance so he can impress Gloria at the school dance—only he teaches him the minuet.

When Charlie invites Gloria on a picnic, they spy a group of men taking dogs on leashes to a building nearby. Gloria and Charlie discover the dogs are being mistreated and forced to fight each other. With the help of The Fox, they get the police to break up the ring and free the dogs.

After Charlie stops a boy from molesting a girl at school, she and her sewing class make him a satin cloak, just like the one The Fox wears. When Charlie thinks all is well, he gets a message that the bullies are holding Gloria down by the docks and will kill her unless he comes. Now it’s up to Charlie to rescue her, but is he strong enough and smart enough to pull it off?

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine coming-of-age story October 4, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Many children, especially those with younger siblings, will be able to relate to this novel. Luke, who is growing up in a dysfunctional home, must find a way to keep his younger brother, Cole, from getting involved in a gang--and things aren't looking too good. That is, until The Fox, a robin hood-like hero from television, arrives.

The Fox serves as a role model for Luke, and Luke's character develops throughout the novel from helpless to responsible and confident. I especially enjoyed the scene in which he gets rid of his mother's abusive boyfriend (I won't spoil how.) Also, normally first person present tense jars me out of a story, but this was written so well that I didn't even notice the tense until Chapter 3. All in all, a read that's well worth the price!
