Editorial Reviews

In this DVD master bookbinder Peter Goodwin demonstrates in detail how he achieves this traditional binding, easily, with little fuss.

Peter Goodwin has been binding books for over 64 years and is now perhaps one of the last fully apprenticed journeyman bookbinders still practicing his craft. Thanks to 'perfect binding' and the Brittle Book Syndrome traditional bookbinders are no longer needed.

The fully bound beautifully decorated leather book is a joy to behold and a joy from which to read. Soon the only way one can own one of these attractive and costly books will be to do it yourself.

Peter Goodwin shows how he does it so in the years to come the craft of bookbinding will not be lost.

Filmed by TV producer Janette Heffernan in the bindery.

Other DVD's in this series include:

Restoring the 1819 Atlas - the half bound leather book The Account Book - making a springback ledger Repairing the 'Humble" Paperback - how to do this at home. Restoring the Family Bible.

These are available through CustomFlix video shop. . A fully licensed institutional DVD can also be purchased from CustomFlix for use in public libraries & schools.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not stop watching June 20, 2011
Verified Purchase
I just received this DVD and was intending to watch it at a later date but the DVD smelled definitely of wood smoke. So I put it in just to make sure it worked. It worked just fine but I could not stop watching the DVD. Instead of watching two minutes, I watched the whole thing. I don't know that I could do even a sloppy job of what Peter Goodwin did even if I watched him do it again while I copied him (I did buy it as an instructional DVD) but it was fascinating to watch. He does give an overview of each step but it shows clearly that he is a master of great experience. Much of it is very quick, though there are a few moments of stills and some slow motion. You do see him do it all, in detail, but I think it might work just slightly better as a documentary than as a how to. This may be because, as the DVD mentions, that it is number five in a series. After seeing this I intend to get the other DVD's I can find on Amazon and hope that they may cover some of the basics in a manner more suited to a complete novice, like myself. Even if they don't though, if they are anything like this DVD, I can't see myself feeling cheated. Seeing a pile of old folios and bits of material turn into that leather bound book in such detail was simply beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must See TV For Bookbinder Wannabees October 15, 2008
By Tom
This is a wonderful tutorial and overview for the beginning bookbinder (like me). Accomplished binders might get a different approach to some aspects. Mr. Goodwin's wit and charm leads the viewer through every step, from sewing on cords to gold tooling. Because of the scope of what is covered there are some details that are not fully developed. Don't forget, it's only about 1.5 hours long, not a two-year apprenticeship! Beginners should buy this and watch it several times. I think experienced bookbinders could thoroughly enjoy this and get some tips, but would be better served by renting/viewing it on Amazon's "Video On Demand" service (it's cheaper that way). Janette Heffernan does the solid video work and knows when to zoom in for a close-up. I enjoyed their funny banter. She might want to consider using a tripod for stability. Fine instructional video overall!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource July 20, 2008
I have watched at least part of all of Mr. Goodwin's dvd's. This is the best yet. The information is clearly presented and the demonstrations are very helpful. You need to have a book to cover in leather and his explanation of how to prepare a text block is clear and helpful. I would highly recommend this dvd.

Although I own many books on bookbinding, I am, at heart, a visual learner. So when I heard about Peter Goodwin's DVD series, I jumped at the opportunity to purchase them... And I am beyond pleased with them. Mr. Goodwin is informative, has a wonderful sense of humor, and (like another reviewer mentioned for a different title) makes you feel like you are right there in the studio with him.
