Product Description

For Personal Light Anywhere, that won't disturb others. This hands free light delivers features and practical usefulness unmatched by other portable lights: extra wide & bright light from 6 LEDs, longer battery life, 2 clip-on filters, clip on magnifier, and optional AC & DC power adapters. Read Everything: It's a true reading light that works with all Kindles and other eReaders, printed books, PLUS newspapers, loose documents, maps and other items that can't support a clip-on light. Worn around the neck, it shines a cool & steady light for reading, quilting, knitting, all needlework & crafts, and searching a dark basement. Use it for writing journals, working, camping, and changing diapers at night. The extra bright light is helpful for those with aging eyes. The long battery life is especially valuable during a power outage and when traveling. No wonder reviewers called it the "most useful, versatile tool I've found in a while" and "by far the best personal reading light we have come across". Other critics rave as well. The BNR LED 6-3 features 6 bright energy saving LEDs in a row for an extra wide but still personal light and a switch that lets you light just 3 LEDs. 4 standard alkaline AA batteries (not included) will last for 50 hours using all 6 LEDs or 100 hours when using 3 LEDs. Kit includes 2 clip-on filters: orange for a softer light and to reduce blue light; red to reduce ambient light for sensitive bed partners or to help maintain night vision. Also 1 large 4x5 inch lightweight acrylic clip-on Fresnel magnifier. The magnifier is a useful accessory for short periods of detail work for those with normal vision and is not a low vision aid. The Beam N Read family of Hands Free Lights also includes the BNR LED 3 with 3 LEDs, batteries & 1 filter; LED 103m with 3 LEDs and 3 clip-on Magnifiers; LED 6 w4F with 6 LEDs and 4 colored filters, and the LED P with 6 red LEDs..

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for Everyone November 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this product mainly for the hands-free magnifier so I could start cross-stitching again. The neck strap was too short, I could not keep it positioned where I wanted it on my chest, so the light shone more into my chest than down onto my stitching, and the magnifier actually made it harder for me to see my work.

I was contacted by email by the VP of the company, who asked me to edit my original review (which I have done in the paragraph above) because he thought it was unfair and suggested that I have vision problems. For the record, I have NORMAL VISION. In fact, maybe my vision is too good for this product. After years of being 20/15 or better, my vision is now a "mere" 20/20. Perhaps I require less magnification than this product offers.

I will not dispute that for many, this is a great product, but for me, it was not. Is this not the whole reason that amazon allows us to review products?? How else will other 5'10" women with good vision know that this may not work for them?

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Booklight November 30, 2008
I love this booklight! Whenever my husband and I drive someplace, I bring my book along and he always complains about the light. But this booklight shines directly on the pages. It hangs around your neck so you don't have to keep adjusting it like you do with a clipon. It's also great if you like to read in bed.

I am able to make significant progress on a needlepoint picture because this light is as good as daylight in working on my project. Before I purchased this light, I had to lay my picture aside when the sun went down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book light March 10, 2010

I'm using this with NiMH batteries to read in bed. The light hangs on your neck and sits on your chest and overall it works well.

My criticisms are 1: it's a bit on the heavy side--with today's LEDs it should work with AAA batteries. 2: I wish the light could pivot upward more. 3: It comes with a yellow filter meant to soften the bluish LED light and I wish the filter would be a little whiter to allow more light to pass through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lighting the way September 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased the Beam N Read for an elderly friend that will be 90 in October! I was at her house one day and she was talking to someone else about getting batteries for her flashlight in case the power should go out. She now walks with a walker and I thought how akward for her to balance a flashlight and her walker in the dark. So I found this little guy and sent it to her. She just loves it! It fits right into the pouch of her walker and all she has to do when she needs more light is to put it around her neck and it will "light her way!" Her hands are free to navigate the walker which makes her treks around the house safer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Used with the Kindle DX ebook reader September 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased the Kindle DX ebook reader and found that clip-on book lights do not work with it because the frame edge is too small causing the clip to obscure part of the screen display. This light offers an alternative because it hangs around the neck.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Effective Book Light May 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been experimenting with book lights for years. All have had faults, mostly weak illumination. The Beam N Read is the best light I've ever owned. It's very bright and spreads illumination over the entire page, whether you're reading a paperback book or a tabloid newspaper. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best for handcrafters September 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
If you are a knitter, embroiderer, hand quilter, etc. then this light will really work for you. I love it for when I am working in an area that is not well lighted, or especially as a passenger in the car. I get a lot of knitting done in the car, and I couldn't do it without this light. I used to use the previous model with the old type light bulbs. This version is so much better, much brighter, wider lit up area, bulbs last indefinitely. It's comfortable to wear and the light is directed just where you need it. I can't do without it.
Nov. 16, 2012: I want to add that during the recent hurricane Sandy in NYC I used the Beam N Read constantly during the blackout. It was much better than a flashlight. My hands were free while I walked around the apartment and it lighted my way, as well as lit whatever I was looking at or doing. I was even able to knit, which kept me calm. It certainly kept me from tripping over anything while walking around in the dark, beautifully lighting the floor ahead of me. I wore it all the time during the hurricane blackout.
If you are knitting with a dark color yarn it really helps your work to have a bright light, too.

It's bright but hard to keep on target due to limited adjustments. The rotary switch wore out in a few weeks of limited use rendering it unusable.
