5.0 out of 5 stars this is the LED you want, August 25, 2010

Purchased must've been 100 led bulbs over the years, all of them not-read-for-prime-time. Finally read up on these, bought a few, adding more each year. Gorgeous light, not too white/blueish, excellent performance as measured by my Kill-A-Watt. They are pricey, but getting better. Highest recommendation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for certain applications. Bad for others., December 12, 2010
This bulb does seem to put out just as much light as a 50w incandescent bulb. However, were as an incandescent bulb broadcast the light at almost 360 degrees, this bulb only seems to broadcast light at a little more than 180 dregrees. The bulb works well in ceiling flush mounted applications, were the light will be broadcasted down and out to the side. But the light performs horribly in a table lamp were a full 360 degree broadcast is prefered. The color of the light is a soft white, and not the warm yellowish color of the incandescent. But it is not the typical bright white to almost blue color of most led bulbs.

I purchased this in March 2011 and have been using it on a daily basis ever since I received it. I use it in a goose-neck lamp that is beside my bed. I was only willing to spend the extra money for this bulb after reading the various opinions and reviews of the technology elsewhere. I was not concerned about it's ability, or lack thereof, to light a room. My usage was for a reading lamp that I also use in the morning when I wake up.
In the past I've tried both old school incandescent bulbs and compact florescent bulbs, both produced ample light, but neither last very long and heat (w/incandescent's) are a problem. The 5x1 Watt CREE LED 110 hasn't disappointed me in any respect. I know that LED bulbs are a bit pricey, but think of all the storage space and time saved by not doing the replacement & not shopping for bulbs. I need a new basement bulb. It's located about 12 feet above me, so a long lasting LED might just be the answer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great in a closet, May 17, 2011

I ordered this to replace the bare-bulb in the ceiling of a closet in my old house. I was told that house fires frequently start in small closets because the lights are too close to objects on the top shelf (inches away in this case) and the heat from the bulb can start a fire. With that warning, the expense of an LED lightbulb seemed worth it as a safety measure.

This bulb produces plenty of light. Unlike an incandescent, the light is not "all around"; it only shines away from the socket. In my case this is not an issue, but in a lamp or other fixture it might look a little strange. Though I haven't tried it, I imagine these bulbs might work quite well in inset "can" ceiling lights, as there is no need to light up the inside of the can, but just shine light downwards.

The light is indeniably much more blue than the lightbulb I replaced.

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase, and will probably buy a couple more for the other closets in my house.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bright enough, but a bit blue for my tastes..., December 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
These definitely put out around 50 watts equivalent illumination (I would guess just slightly better) while sipping just 5 watts of power. I really like that. I also like the life expectancy. No need to climb a ladder to change these twice a year -- seems like that's how often I was changing the incandescent that these replaced.

However, these are just a bit on the "blue" side for my taste. I like the warmer light of an incandescent. The Cree LED Lighting LR6-GU24 which is a can light is excellent -- I love them. I had hoped that Cree had gotten these bulbs to put out a similar light quality, but alas, it was not so.
