Okay so this is my first Amazon review, but it definitely won't be my last.

Let's start with the cons:

The product itself seems to be working extremely well, ridiculously bright
I started to use a computer fan on the capacitor since it seemed to run fairly hot and the fan keeps it at a cool comfortable temp.

SO, i started using the light right out of the box and had no problems. Then, after a bit i started to smell burning plastic but was unable to determine where it was coming from. After doing some searching online for similar accounts i found the problem... The reflector that comes in the package has a thin blue plastic sheet that is supposed to be removed before use (was to protect it during shipping). However, nowhere in the box was any notice of such a thing or as i can recall any instructions whatsoever. So essentially the smell was indeed from burning plastic and unfortunately some was melted solid to the reflector and won't come off.
But already the smell is much much less and I have less to worry about the fire hazard that was present.

Overall
Great product, does exactly what it is supposed to and my plants are growing fantastically
Capacitor runs hot so adding a small quiet fan is nice to cool its heatsink
REMOVE THE PLASTIC COVER on the reflector, less you want to do some serious damage via fire or destroyed bulb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plants Love it!, January 30, 2010

This product does work very well for growing medicinal herbs. My plants are growing very rapidly, as much as an inch a day on a 12 inch plant. The heat output is manageable: I have a 10" box fan pointed at the ballast that also circulates air in the grow room so the light stays cool, too. The design is no frills utilitarian, with long long power cords. The manufacturer also sells replacement bulbs for under $30 each. I believe this unit is an excellent value, and I plan to buy another one so that I can have one in vegetative mode (MH bulb)and another in bloom mode (HPS bulb) to maintain constant production. I highly recommend this product.
Update: I did buy the second unit and right now I have both using HPS bulbs finishing out my medicinal grow in soil. I sampled the product and give the results two thumbs up! Tiny clones to finished medicine in 90 days. With 2 400 watt bulbs and the two ballasts they do produce heat (all HPS and MH do). If you want to use these in a grow tent, you need to match the size (or number of lights) to the tent size and tent manufacturer's recommendations for the type of lights and the power/heat. Don't blame the light. Since a tent is confinement of space you will need positive ventilation. There is a very good reason why tents come with multiple vents for fans.

2.0 out of 5 stars Here's what you need to know!, October 7, 2010

This review is from: LED Wholesalers GYO2002 4-Piece 400 Watt Hydroponic Reflector Grow Light Set (Lawn & Patio)
Okay so this is my first Amazon review, but it definitely won't be my last.

Let's start with the cons:

The reflector on this light is awfully cheap and doesn't contain any of the heat. Using the MH bulb it will stay cooler but the HPS will get hot and heat whatever area this light is in. It also does not come with a tempered glass piece to cover the bulb. This means heat is directly pushed downward and can burn your plants. Adding a piece of glass would fix this, however there is no convenient way to do so. More expensive reflectors also have 6" holes on each side so you can easily fan the hot air directly through the fixture and away from the plants.

Yes the instructions are vague but I'm sure you'll be able to figure them out. It also doesn't mention removing the blue strip of tape, which will eventually burn and can destroy the bulb/fixture.

The ballast gets hot. While most ballasts do get toasty this one almost gets too hot to touch at times. Make sure it's in a well ventilated area away from the light or else it's gonna get realllll hot.

---Most important: the plugins for the ballast on my strip had problems. While everything plugged in fine, sometimes the grounds would disconnect and the light would turn off. We would have to jiggle it back but even after it turned on it would usually shut off again.--- Thus, I returned this item.

Okay, how about some pros:

Very cheap kit. The replacement system I bought (though totally worth it) cost $300.

Switchable lights. Switching between bulbs was a breeze and this definitely made things easier on my end. Having both bulbs was nice too (they were certainly bright), however they were cheaper bulbs too and likely will lose intensity (though older bulbs stay bright, they often lose intensity and change color spectrum).

It works! If you're looking for a cheap lighting option and you have an area with good ventilation or lots of room, this light will certainly help. My advice: weigh all your options before making any decisions, and don't deal with a set if it has pluging issues like mine did!

Not the highest quality, but more than enough for the price. Working with MH and HPS, plus including each bulb makes this price a STEAL. The seller was in state so I recieved the unit in about 4 days.

This package is a great value. Everything works as it should. The hood is a bit cheap and gets very hot, but for this price...very much worth the trade-off. Make sure that you peal the blue plastic off from under the hood.

Remote ballast actually keeps a significant amount of heat away from the bulb/fixture. Both included bulbs are very decent quality/spectrum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product, zero instructions., September 16, 2010

I'm basically saying what everyone else has said already, but the more feedback the better. The product came as advertised and seems to be working great. Both the 400W HPS and 400W MH bulbs are insanely bright and haven't given me any issues turning on or off. I have my ballast plugged into a surge protector which is plugged into a timer, and it powers up every time without a problem.

Instructions to set this up are completely non-existent... but it's simple to figure out. The reflector pulley's that came with my kit seem to be malfunctioning or just low-quality. Every time I would try to lower the reflector, it would pull right back up (not sure if anyone else had this problem), no matter how much I messed with the wing nuts on the side of the pulleys it would never stop the reflector from pulling back up. I solved this by purchasing some alligator clips and just clipping them onto the string to stop it from retracting. Easy.

The ballast does run a little hot, but it's designed to be a silent heatsink. I just put a small fan behind it to blow some air over the top and it seems to be working well.

All-in-all I am very happy with my purchase. I would highly recommend it to anyone, but don't be surprised when you don't find any instructions!

3.0 out of 5 stars great product for the price, March 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Considering the price of the product, it's decent.

The good: This is the cheapest full system setup you can get for $150.

The bad: The hangers work on a spring loaded tension type system, the problem I had was that one of the hangers pulled the hood up farther than the other one. So the level of the hood was off by like 45 degrees. I tried to adjust the tension but they were already at the lightest setting. So I had to lay a crescent wrench on one side to distribute the weight of the hood evenly. Also, the mh and hps bulbs are on the low quality side and produce quite a bit of heat and use a little bit more electricity than quality, more expensive bulbs. I have a small 2X4 grow tent and the temps reached up to 92 deg. I even had one fan blowing directly on it, and another oscillating with the tent completely open and temps were still unmanageable. So then I put two 265cfm squirrel cage fans in the tent, one for intake and one for exhaust, and still temps reached 88 deg.

The design flaw in this system: The hood. If you don't have an open space with adequate ventilation, then you might have to invest in a ported hood like I did. I had to get a 6" ported sunsystems hood and hook up a fan to it, now temps never get above 78 deg... perfect.

To recap- I'd recommend this product to anyone on a low budget. But beware, you'd better have an open, well ventilated space, or invest in some fans and a new hood if you want to manage temps. I WOULDN'T recommend this to anyone who plans to use this in a grow tent, unless you have some kickazz ventilation or unless you want to blast the AC. But it'd be more practical to buy a better system with a ported hood.

Well that's my 2 cents.

1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't even last eight months, November 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: LED Wholesalers GYO2002 4-Piece 400 Watt Hydroponic Reflector Grow Light Set (Lawn & Patio)
This is an edited review. My previous review was fairly positive: I loved the unit for the most part. Unfortunately, the ballast didn't last through eight months of (non-consecutive) use, and will no longer fire a Metal Halide bulb. It appears to work with HPS bulbs, but will not fire even brand-new MH bulbs which have been verified to work in the replacement ballast. I was working on the plants removing dead heads and checking fruit one day when it appeared that the bulb blew: A brighter flash followed by a rapid decrease in brightness until the room was dark. After checking with other bulbs, I discovered that HPS bulbs appear to work, while MH bulbs will not. Even though the ballast will fire HPS bulbs, it is clearly malfunctioning, and I am not confident enough in malfunctioning electrical equipment to risk a fire, so the entire unit had to be replaced.
