Buying trays of plants at Home Depot is EXPENSIVE. Seeds are so much cheaper, but planting them in the yard is hit or miss - and there just isnt enough time in a grow season.
So...I have been getting a fast start on mother nature by starting flower and veg seeds under florescent lights in my basement for over 20 years (I use a folding table covered with an...

when i opened the package the MH bulb was shattered, there was not protective stuff around the bulb which was an obvious mistake. when i ledwholesalers they were very very slow at any customer service. it took me multiple calls and almost a week to receive a replacement light, and i had to pay for shipping.

and it gets worse...

about 3 weeks into using my MH bulb, the thing died. it was defective. luckily i had the hps bulb.

i've been using the bulb for about a month now, it just went out.

these bulbs are supposed to last months. this is an absolute joke. they ripped me off.

DO NOT BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE. the price is decent but you're better off burning your money.

A very good looking unit exactly as described, packaged well, and sent in a timely manner. The only problem is that IT QUIT WORKING within a week of use. Now I have to go thru the b-s of returning it for a refund thru Amazon.

Buying trays of plants at Home Depot is EXPENSIVE. Seeds are so much cheaper, but planting them in the yard is hit or miss - and there just isnt enough time in a grow season.
So...I have been getting a fast start on mother nature by starting flower and veg seeds under florescent lights in my basement for over 20 years (I use a folding table covered with an electric blanket under a plastic drap cloth - works great!).
Florescent lights work but really dont have enough candle power - the plants get long and leggy.
So for the last few years Ive checked into MH and HPS lights - lots more light but costly. And most MH and HPS setups in the 600W range require two sets of lights and cost a bundle.
This dual system is by far the cheapest I have found and at this point I have tomato and other plants that look as good as anything I have ever gotten in a retail store.
Granted it will take a few years to recoup this investment, but all of my plants are the really cool ones you see in the seed catalogs and since I have gotten that "jump" on mother nature, my neighbors are going to be green with envy when I have home grown tomatoes two months before they do!!!!

I bought 2 of these units and they worked fine for about 5-6 months and then both went out. Neither is replacable after 1 month so your screwed buying from them or many Amazon products like this. Check the return policy, may be worth it to buy local. This has happened once before with a Amazon sponsored product. Not blamming Amazon but they should enforce better warranties.

It's the risk we take when we buy inexpensive and this time I did'nt dodge the bullet. Have grow tents, floresent lights and about 10 more things that I am pleased with and got a great price. I have to re-think my electronic purchases online though after this dismal product and it's failure. Now i have to lay out another $150 bucks for a ballast.

I purchased this setup and was disappointed to discover that the M.H. bulb was bad. I contacted the seller (GYO) and they sent me a replacement promptly.
This system is exactly as advertised. A economical setup that works well. The only drawback so far is that it seems to eat bulbs. Could be cheap bulbs. Otherwise... buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff., February 17, 2011

This is a basic, no-frills unit that gets the job done - nothing fancy but a good buy. There was a problem initially that required some customer service, which was excellent, especially since the problem (electrical in nature) turned out to be at my end (old, restored house). Supplier was patient and generous in getting the problem resolved. This unit, and one other unit purchased at about the same time, have been functioning continuously, 24/0 and 12/12, for several months now with no problems whatsover. I considered deducting one-half star because the devices that adjust the length of the suspension cables, and thus the height of the unit above the plants, don't work well, as has been mentioned in several reviews. But this was a very minor glitch, requiring only a one-paperclip solution - doesn't matter much when compared to the outstanding customer service, so 5 stars it is. BTW: I just ordered a third unit.

As other people have commented the light itself is a very good looking product, and it was packaged very well. It arrived in just a couple days, and worked well at first. It worked great for the first 4 days, but on the 5th day it would not come on. So I contacted amazon to get a new one. Amazon was extremely helpful in resolving my problem and even had the new shipped overnight with no extra charge. Then after I received the new one it didn't work either. It would not even turn on. So I then had to use the new ballast and bulb, with the old light in order to get everything. I would definitely not recommend this product to anyone it is just a lot of trouble to have to go through to get the stupid thing to work.

I purchased this because it was the cheapest with both bulbs by far, even ebay. The downside? Good luck keeping a confined space with awesome ventilation below 90*F when outside temps are 80 or so.

Here's what I've done to solve this; first, I made a cardboard "mold" to shape the hood and make a hole to support a 4" duct exhaust. I used two "half-ovals" for the ends and one large piece folded over the hood with two holes to fit the strings it hangs from through. Now that you have half a well-shaped hood (the best part is, you can customize how wide / narrow the light is!), throw in a pyrex baking tube thingy in there around the bulb (MH is a little wider but will still fit).

Also, I lined the cardboard with a coating of duct tape followed by mylar around the entire thing. THIS IS A MUST; YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO LOOSE LIGHT FROM DUCT TAPE OR CARDBOARD ABSORBING IT AS HEAT!

Once this was set up, I managed to keep the temps LOWER than the room it was in (passive intake is from another, colder room), but I imagine this would essentially remove all excess heat if your intake was in the room your confined grow area was in.

I should note that you can keep the lights closer to the plants, but the pyrex glass reduces the lumens a bit on average..... but since you can put them closer, it can effectively put more lumens on each plant. In addition to this, don't be an idiot and keep your ballast OUTSIDE of the grow area... that will generate so much heat its unreal.

More specifics: I'm using a 400cfm fan that exhausts through 6" ducting into a 430cfm carbon filter. The exhaust comes from the top of the room (as far away from the intake as possible) and goes from 1x6" ducting to 2x4" ducting. One 4" ducting goes to the light, the other stays right there at the top and vents the hot air that rises.

good luck, and do yourself a favor and buy some cheap ratchet light hangers - much easier than these "twist and hope it stays where you want it" things, but just my opinion.

I'm working on a budget, so had few options available to me when I wanted lights to start my landscaping plants indoors. This shipped and arrived quickly (I LOVE my Amazon Prime membership!), with everything intact and functioning.

We opted to use chain from the local hardware store, rather than depend on the flimsy light hangers included with the set. I've had this up and running solidly for a couple of weeks now, and have no complaints. It runs quietly, my nursery room isn't too hot (I have a very basic ventilation system set up), and I didn't break the bank getting set up. The good news is that I can now opt to upgrade just the reflector to a vented hood when I can afford it and am ready, and I still have the ballast and bulbs.

I have no regrets purchasing this as my first step, and actually was so happy with it that I just placed my order for a 2nd, matching light.
