Great addition to the Star Wars Lego family-but recommended for patient fans, December 2, 2005

This review is from: LEGO Star Destroyer (Toy)
The Lego Imperial Star Destroyer is one of the nicest Lego sets out due to its sheer size, over 3,000 piece count, and just because its one of the most elegant looking designs in the Star Wars universe. Overall construction time for this set is about 12-16 hours (not factoring in breaks and whatnot) and a good sturdy work area is recommended (I used a card table to build mine on)-I would NOT build this set on the bed or floor due to later stability issues that will arise. Please note that if you are planning to display this set that an eventual droop will occur (or may not, but I have seen where its occurring more than its not occurring) in the ship due to the weight of the ship being on two support structures. There are numerous fixes for this that could be found online using internet search engines, from simple fixes like using pennies to more complex modifications including additional Lego pieces. Great kit, and recommended for the serious Lego Star Wars fan!

Biggest and nicest Lego model ever, October 22, 2005
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: LEGO Star Destroyer (Toy)
At the time this model came out, it has been the largest set with 3104 bricks. It took me several days (12 - 16 hours) to assemble it. The model is very impressive do to its size of almost 1 meter (about 37 inches). Even though in the meantime Lego released the Death Star (model #10143) with more 3449 bricks, this is still the biggest one (size wise) around. Definitely a must-have for Lego/Star Wars fans.

Great kit...but!, January 7, 2007
This review is from: LEGO Star Destroyer (Toy)
My 12 year old son and I are just finishing this up. First and foremost, the magnets and part attachments that hold the two bottom panels will NOT keep them on. We used a hot glue gun that easily solved the problem, but it was intially very frustrating. Surprising that LEGO would have such a flawed design at this price. Recommend that two people work on this together and lay out the parts by type and size before beginning construction (we used clear baggies). Typical great LEGO instructions with a HUGE manual. Overall, an amazing kit with a design flaw. This thing is BIG!

Great Build, August 25, 2009

Lego Star Destroyer is a great build. Make sure you have plenty of room and time to complete it. It took me 4 hours just to seperate the pieces into piles, and approx. another 25-30 to complete the build. This is a model, not a toy. It isn't meant to be played with or moved around much after assembly. The magnets hold the lower plates on just fine as long as you don't try to pick it up by anything other than the stand. I built it in our lower level family room and it is now displayed in our master bedroom. And yes, I did do the sound effects when I "flew" it from point A to point B.

Can't really review the product itself, but wanted to let buyers know this EXACT model is available from Lego directly for $199 with free shipping. Even Lego's normal price is $50 less than Amazon's. Just wanted to let anyone know... oh, note that this info is as of 11/22/2008.
The star ratings are required to post, so I'm basing the ratings on past Lego experiences.
Once my son gets this next month for Christmas, I'll let you know how WE did with the assembly (yes, we do these big sets together! That's half the fun!)

Update 1/5/2009
It would appear that lego.com no longer has this item available, at least as of this update review, which is probably why the Amazon price has again jumped. Sorry.
As far as the product itself, a FANTASTIC Lego challenge for me and my son. He's learning patience as he prepares his work environment (as a good building environment is required for this large model), and that completion of a large project in one day is not required. We are very excited to enjoy this project together.
Another update once completed.

Lego Star Destroyer, November 15, 2007
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars

A must for this model is a very large table to lay everything out, an eye for counting and about 20 hours. Apart from that I enjoyed myself immensely and I have to say the model is awesome the more you look the more you appreciate the detail. I had no trouble with the magnets and I think the model is very sturdy and well designed. Its interesting when you build the different sections you wonder why certain things are buitl that way but when it all slots together it is a very clever piece of design. I am now looking out for the next one to build.

I haven't built anything with legos since I was a boy some 20 years ago, and haven't really kept up with the advances in lego sets. I certainly didn't imagine that a set like this existed.
First off, this thing is big. You will need a 3X3 foot place to display this beast. However its size is one of the reasons this thing is as impressive as it is.
I only gave it three stars for durability because it is not a toy that can be played with. It is strictly for display. I have read some reviews that state the magnets used to hold it together are not strong enough, but that was not a problem with my set. It holds itself together very well. Just don't let your 3 year old son get a hold of it.
Of course its educational value is limited, but its Star Wars and Legos. I wasn't planning on learning molecular physics during the building process.
As for fun. WOW. Putting this together brought back so many memories of Legos from long ago that I was sad when I finished. That's not to say that I breezed through putting it together in an hour or two. It took many after work sessions to complete, and once I attached the big thrusters on the back, from then on, I had to make myself put it down to go to bed.
Like I said, if you are looking for something like this to display in your office or house, definately pick one up. However, you can get them on ebay MUCH cheaper than they are being sold here, and if you buy a previously built set, with a guarentee that all the pieces are present, then you won't have to worry about a faulty magnet problem.

High WOW factor, January 10, 2009

This was a lot fo fun to put together, and has given my son a target to shoot for with his own Lego projects. The cost is a tad on the high side, but it possesses such an impact on those who see it, as well as the hours savoring construction.
There is another set out there now that is larger than this 3000ish set - the Millenium Falcon Ultimate series is topping 5000 pieces, but is also on the expensive side (more so that this set). It still does set the mind in gear.
I will echo that a hard surface is a must, as is a dedicated space. This is not a set to work on in fits and starts unless you live alone and don't mind having pieces strewn about. The number of profiles alone makes for necessary sorting and planning for most of us.
Overall, it was a great recapturing of the Lego experience, and it's opened the door to some other more complex display projects with my son, perhaps to begin a small collection. [If they could brign the price down a tad, this would make it easier, though...]

Great Model, May 4, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

I've never had this much fun with a Lego set since I built my last great set 8865, and it was ages ago. When I first saw this set, I knew I was gonna get it, did so too.
I wanted to savour the experience by spending a few hours on it everyday but piece after piece it was getting harder to let go. Finally, at the end of the day I finished building. This set is beautiful to look at and what's more beautiful is the look at your friends faces when they see it.
I own about 200 sets, most of them on display, but as a centerpiece this model is a sure attention grabber. Of course it has problems, I had the same magnet problem, but if you don't touch it's not a problem. Afterall, it's not like you can play with this thing anyways.
In short, as a Lego fan this is a great building experience, as a Star Wars fan it's a huge model to show off in the middle of your living room. Buy it, before it's no more...

This is a great set. It's really impressive too. So, if you don't mind building a set for over 12 hours, and you have space in your house, then I really suggest you buy this. I had a few problems while building this with my bro, so I'll give you some tips. Don't. I repeat, don't build this on a bed, floor, or any undurable surface. I got a back pain, headache, and lots of persperation while building the bridge on the floor. If you are the kind of person who loves stuff hanging from the ceiling, then hang it on your ceiling, although you need to modify it a bit. It looks really good when hanged, and it also doesn't droop.
