4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun!, October 24, 2008
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this set because, as a grown man, I really couldn't justify spending much more money than this on a toy. Still, it brought me back to my youth! I've always liked the LEGO Technic sets, and it seems like they've come a long way since the last time I put one together. I made the "A" model, the dune buggy - with rear suspension and a "working" 2-cylinder engine. It was very interesting to put together, and well-planned. It took me about an hour, and now I've got a very detailed dune buggy with working steering and suspension. I haven't made the "B" model as I can't bring myself to take apart the buggy yet, but I expect it'll be just as good. Now I have to stop myself from getting bigger Technic sets now that I've been reminded how much fun they are.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sleeper!, April 26, 2008

I did not expect too much from this model but in the end it has proven a very fun, robust model. It is a simple design that works very well. The engineering principles are easy to see and it holds up to rough play from the children. Updated December 2008: this set is now out of production and becoming scarce. This is not a very large set and you may find better value in some of the newer, in-production sets (e.g., Lego 8256, 8261 and especially 8262).

5.0 out of 5 stars Incrementallu educational, fun and at the right pace, May 31, 2009
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
I got this for my son to see if he was as much a leo maniac as his dad. If not, I thought it would teach him a basic concept or two. It's a nice product when finished. My son now understands why cars have a suspension and how they steer. The piston concept is a little unusual and reversed, and I took longer to explain why the wheels are driving the pistons when it really is the other way around in real life (well unless you're coasting where the engine is simply being run by the engaged wheels) Also, pistons are supposed to be closed so while that part can be explained to older kids. younger ones may not get it. But STOP right there. Kids are entitled to their fun and everything shouldn't simply be looked at from its educational value. I just got carried away by my educational background. Technic lego skips the silly little details in exchange for the big picture. I recall being able to understand how a differential works far better than I would with something far more realistic, thanks to the more complex car chassis set I had when I was young.

The main thing is, this is fun to build and play with, and somewhat educational as a bonus. Don't try too hard to make it a teaching tool - it's really just good fun to make a toy that has working things on it and that gives kids a sense of achievement different from building something totally static.

This is somewhat challenging for an 11 year old to assemble, the cool thing you can learn how gears work, and the car moves once it's assembled. Read more
