It appears Lego simply puts an age stamp on the box based on the number of pieces. This set, for example, has 700 pcs or so, and is claimed to be for 7-10 yr olds. But its not one big piece (or two) that are being put together here, it is several cars that come with this. As a result, a 7-yr old is likely to find little challenge in this set and will likely get bored putting it together given how easy it will seem. Parts of the track don't stay very well together and it does take up a god amount of space in the room. Overall it's a Lego which makes it a great toy, but they should either label it for younger children or increase the volume of 1-2 pieces to make it more appropriate for 7-10yr olds.
