Four stars? Yes, I know. All Lego products deserve five stars. And if you look at my other reviews, you'll find plenty of high ratings for Lego, especially the small-size Technic sets. These sets are great, even for younger builders, as they exhibit mechanical functions in a simple and direct way. They also hold together better than their brick-built cousins.

This set falls short in the playability department. It has a knob to control the steering, and there is a single spring that allows for both front and back suspension. On the whole however, the kids have not been terribly interested in playing with it. They much prefer some of the other Technic vehicles that have more functions. For example, they really enjoy the two sets that bracket this one (8065 and 8067). That said, one of the values of Lego is that it can be rebuilt; my kids have already taken apart the Jeep and started building it into unrecognizable contraptions. There is merit in something that encourages redesign.

I bought this for a friend's 8yo grandson and this is what my friend told me:

----
Thank you very very much for this gift.

We couldnt wait to open the 8066 as soon as we received it from the mail (June30).
I let Vg build the Off-Roader by himself, guiding him minimally and observing his feeling of achievement and his awe at the finished Off-Roader. The puzzle is easy, simple and beautiful.

Two days later, I disassembled it and let him do the Buggy model. This time, however, I got more interested at the puzzle. As I watched, I realized that the LEGO engineers who designed this puzzle (and for sure all the Technics Kits) are geniuses of the mechanical field. This is not a simple toy just for a kid. Yes a kid would appreciate the moving parts but a curious adult would be amazed at the demonstration of principles of mechanical tools that we learned in grade school.

The Buggy kit has demonstrated the use of the wedge as well as the use of the wheel. The designer made the front wheel assembly steer to the left and right NOT by the usual steering mechanism like we have in our cars. And the designer showed this as a surprise. While I watched Vg build the Buggy, the question of how the front wheel would steer was formed in my mind. Even the swiveling back assembly had mislead me. Only when the Buggy got finished and we actually played with it did I see the beautiful design. Others who would build this kit will experience it by themselves. Im sure they will form the question in their mind. They will have something to explain to their grandsons. Hey! I dont mean the equation of forces and motions!

Kudos to the LEGO Technics Engineers!

Although Technic Lego items are usually quite a bit more difficult than Lego's regular sets, this one doesn't follow it's roommates in Technic land. It's actually quite simple to assemble, and has quite a few neat attributes, i.e. steering wheel that actually moves, large heavy-duty truck-like wheels that turn, etc. This guy took my experienced builder about 30 minutes to assemble, so keep that in mind if buying for a new Lego fan. These technic sets are great for understanding the engineering of engines and overall mechanics and this set does that nicely with the definitive drivetrain. Just a really neat set, it's appreciated greatly in this house. Highly recommend!

I got this set because it does look pretty realistic. It reminds me of the Rally Truck back from 2009.
The set is pretty simple. What you see on the box is what you get. I really liked it because it does have suspension. It comes with one spring loaded suspender which you put horizontaly under the car, and it creates suspension for both the front and the back. It also has steering in the front by twisting the gear in the back. It is connected by a movable piece. The car also has two grey seats, clear lights made of Bohrok eye pieces, and a cap for the so called engine made of two black Technic plates.
Pros:
Front steering
Front and back suspension, created by using only one suspender.
detailed car.
Cons:
There is a lot of axles half a module long that are left uncovered, which makes the car seem incomplete.
No roof

I added it on my Technic Collection

Overall, this set gives you a basic function of what bigger Technic cars have. Its your overall small set. I would recommend it to someone else.

This is the Lego 8066 being built in to the Dune Buggy. You can find other Lego Stop Motion builds on [...]
The Off Roader is probably the better looking build, but the dune buggy makes a better "floor toy" because it steers by leaning the vehicle to the right or left.

He loved it. I gave it to him with other jeep stuff for his bday and he loved it. Matter-of-fact he got the box, ripped it open and started putting the jeep part together right then and there. I giggled, but he loved the nostalgia of it all. I did come to find out that it comes with one set of parts and you either put it together one way, the jeep, or the other way, the buggie. I thought it like morphed or something (I'm clueless like that) so for anyone else who was wondering. Also the jeep part is fully functional, can steer and roll around if you have kids and not a kid for a husband :).
