The fire-cycle is a creative touch because you know that with a dumpster fire of that size, a motorcycle-borne fireman hasn't a chance. I've rated this as five star educational because it can be used it as a teaching opportunity for an upcoming G-20 riot, Stanley cup playoffs, etc. There are a number of opportunities for lighting a dumpster on fire, and this has helped explore with my children which of those occasions is appropriate.
Note that set does not include the soccer hooligans that started the fire in the first place. I believe they can be purchased separately.
When I got home, my husband (who is even further outside the recommended age bracket), was delighted to see a new Lego set coming into the house. We collected Legos for years when our daughters were little, and have kept every one of them, in anticipation of that day when we have grandchildren in the house to entertain. However, even when we purchased Legos for our daughters, I'm pretty sure their dad got the most enjoyment out of reading the instructions and building the tiny cities.
Legos are always challenging and fun, no matter how simple or extensive the set. Educational value is great too, as it provides the opportunity for kids to read and follow instructions, then to use their imaginations to arrange and re-arrange the cities and create action-oriented scenarios. This set also provides the opportunity to discuss how to put out a fire, and why one should never start a fire in a dumpster :) As to durability, I can vouch for the fact that Legos seem to last forever. We bought the first Lego City for our youngest daughter nearly 29 years ago (she was actually too young to assemble the kit, but Dad gladly did it for her. The age bracket on the product label should really be 5-99+)
I have posted 2 images of the assembled set.
Complexity - With just 40 pieces, this is a very easy set to assemble. Even with a lot of tiny, harder to handle elements, it took my son about 8 minutes to build everything. A more seasoned Lego veteran could probably do it in half the time.
Playability: I've found that any Lego set that includes a motorcycle gets a LOT of playing time, and this is no exception. It's also one of those sets that gets stuck into a pocket or backpack on car rides.
Overall, this is a fun, simple addition to the Lego City line, and one that makes a nice, inexpensive gift - think Easter baskets or stocking stuffers - as well.
The bike itself is great, and far better than the Lego bikes of my youth. I'd like to see more bikes like this sold as individual sets. The logos and signs are all applied with stickers instead of being printed onto the bricks. I got quite a few spare pieces in my box too.
Definitely worth getting.
As a beginner set this is wonderful. It teaches smaller kids how to follow Lego directions and gives them the confidence to try harder sets, and helps them tune their fine motor skills Will buy this for friends who also have preschool aged kids.
