My 8 year old son wrote a review for Lego Master Builder Academy.

For my 8th birthday I got Lego MBA. I got the first set and a subscription for sets 2-6. So far I have gotten the first 3 sets. I like the MBA sets better than any of the other Lego sets that I have because they teach you things you can use when you build other things and because there are three models to build in each set. Each set teaches you a few new Lego building techniques. Kit 1 teaches locking and sideways building. Kit 2 teaches small elements and size scaling (microbuilding). Kit 3 teaches detailing, balancing, and new uses of lego bricks. My favorite models are the rocket(kit 1), the airport (kit 2), and the robo walker (kit 3). Master Academy Builder is my favorite thing to play with.

Picked this up at the mall and it is the best set for a long time. The pieces are not the highly specialized oversized elements but the highly reusable, good for modeling pieces. The ideas in the book are just stunning. It is simply amazing how the Lego designers see the models as they invent them. The simplicity and great use of pieces is very inspirational. The color scheme is cool and I have learned so much building with the instructions. Of course it helps that space is my favorite theme.

Great addition to our Lego Creative Station!

There are lots of good things about this. The multiple instructions and many examples of other things to build are a big hit. The other Lego MBA kits look like they'll build on this nicely.

My quibble is with the price. It's $30 on Lego's website, but over twice that here. I can see no reason for such discrepancy.

I am an adult LEGO fan and I bought this set for myself. When I first heard about these sets, I wasn't too interested in it. Having collected LEGO on and off since my childhood, I am kind of wary of adding to my collection especially since this set contained a lot of odd green and purple pieces. On top of that, the models didn't really appeal to me. However, having read a lot of positive reviews about this series I decided to give the first set a try.

I am not disappointed. The sturdy box comes with a sorting tray, brick separator, a large book with instructions to three space models and of course the LEGO bricks and minifigure.

While there really isn't anything new with the parts selection, you do get a great variety of wedges, slopes and arches to play with. While the lime green and purple didn't really appeal to me, it's a great color scheme and the parts are colored in such a way that you don't really have to worry about color schemes when you design your own models. The body is white, while the trim will be lime green and with a touch of purple here and there. While it may not seem like much, it is a great selection of pieces to play around with and try the different techniques in the book.

The manual details three different spaceships, highlighting different instances of two techniques: locking and sideways building. Locking is an essential technique that makes your model sturdy. Sideways building is as it sounds: changing the direction of certain pieces so they are sideways rather than vertical. Sideways building allows you to smooth out the design with the wedges or develop interesting structures that aren't possible with normal vertical building. These techniques, while essential, and are rather basic.

My son loves lego and has been asking for this for some time. He loves to be challenged and at the same time learn something new about building and creating. As he has been building this one he comes over to us to show is his progression and finally his accomplishment. The smile on his face has been priceless.
