Just so you know, I'm a parent who loved Lego when I was a kid, and then rediscovered it with my kids. We generally like Lego trains and I have not had reason to speak ill of them. But this really IS a special set.

This is Lego's deluxe starter set. The train is nicely crafted and the set has a ton of playability. The engine is a European-style, yellow and gray, electric freight engine. The rolling stock includes a flat car, tank car and container car. The set also has a red full-length container, a yellow half-length container, two small automobiles (that load onto the flat car), green container gantry, a semi with container trailer, and four mini-figures. It includes 8 pieces of straight track, 16 curved, two switches, and 16 pieces of flex track. It also has all the necessary Power Function (PF) accessories (motor, infrared control, and battery box). The battery box is a new part; it holds six AAA batteries and sits inside the engine. If you don't like changing out AAAs, you can opt for the more expensive lithium-ion battery and DC charger available directly from Lego. Also, Lego has designed the engine such that you may add a set of lights (routing the wire under the arched red bricks). The lights (8870) are also available directly from Lego and they connect neatly with all of the PF batteries. That said, there really isn't anything extra that you need to get with this; if you are buying this as a gift for your child or grandchild, the only extras you need to remember are nine AAA batteries.

What do the kids think? Of course, they are all over it. There is a lot you can do with the set. It is a fun build (some kids need help, some don't). The train can go sufficiently fast that it derails.

My seven-year-old boy received this for Christmas. He has loved trains since he first discovered Lego Duplo trains at 18 months. He graduated to regular Legos at age five and has never stopped loving trains, so this was a huge hit and something he's wanted for a long time. He was so excited to find this under the tree and plays with it every day. The details and features in this set are awesome and it comes with plenty of track to get started. All you need to add is batteries. It requires nine AAA. The three in the remote will last a long time, but the six that power the motor will run down quickly if your child plays with the train daily. I highly recommend purchasing rechargeable batteries though, or you'll spend A LOT of money replacing six batteries about once a week. We purchased Tenergy AAA batteries on Amazon and they work great, last longer than regular batteries, and can be charged about 1,000 times.

I would really only give this 3.5 star, but I rounded up to 4. The train is nice and very detailed. But I have a few complaints.

One, the two small cars that came with it could have been a little better. One of the car, blue and black, is put together in a way that it easily falls apart. A few more interlocking pieces to make it more secure would have been nice.

Battery box is screwed on with tiny screws. Lego isn't exactly a toy for infants because of the small pieces so for the life of me I don't know why it has to have a childproof battery box that is cumbersome to replace batteries. It should be snap on and off easily. I guess you can always get the rechargeable battery but that's going to add to the cost.

The remote control was not high quality. You can touch it slightly and it would register, the "click" doesn't exactly mark the point where you change from one speed to the next. When you put the train on first speed, it doesn't move, you have to click it 2 or 3 times.

Overall I like the train, just wished it was a little better.

Santa brought it to our almost 8 year old son for Christmas. He spent all day building the pieces on his own with no help and has been playing with the train since. Definitely worth it, but we got a great deal, wouldn't have been able to get it otherwise. It does use 9 aaa batteries...and I despise the constant need for batteries in toys. Luckily santa brought enough rechargeable batteries in the stocking that we don't have to worry about it for a while, The price greatly inflated by Christmas so I'm glad we checked on Black Friday where it was on sale for $124.99 down from around $159.99. We also used amazon points we had accrued and got the train for $85.00!

It has more track than the red commuter train, but it would still be nice to have more track..,.which actually is harder to find and quite expensive, with not so great reviews.

Great train, our son is in heaven!

Bought this for Christmas for my 6 yr old son and he absolutely loves it! Includes plenty of track to make oval or circle. He loves the crane and the transfer truck and 2 small cars. This provides him w more wheels to make different vehicles. He also made diesel engine to look like steam engine w some of his legos.

As owning multiple older LEGO train sets, I wanted to get this newest freight line and was initially a bit shocked at the price tag. Regardless, I saved part of my budget for the month and splurged on this set and am really glad that I did.
The Good:
The design of the loco is very Euro-like; similar to electric locos I have seen in Germany, Austria, etc.
The cars all have a fair amount of detail, and it all helps to add to a reaslistic set.
The semi and crane are neat, and typically something you always need to buy as an accessory train set in years past.
The power functions work well, have a nicely disguised on/off switch, and the train has very nice speed and power. Think Z06 'vette for a LEGO train.
Track - and LOTS of it conmes with this set! I am used to the little oval with 16 curves and 2 or maybe 4 straight sections. This set has what seems to be twice the track. Many more options for layouts.
The not "as" good:
There are what seem to be 10 little instruction booklets - I liked the older LEGO books (think 6080 castle set) that were larger and not as easy to lose.
A lot of the cargo container walls and other parts are now "molded" single parts, whereas older LEGO sets had a lot more common parts. Less ability to be creative with re-building into something else. I am sure this lowers the cost of the set, but also lowers re-play value for the younger fans.
Difficult to open/swap out batteries on the power functions due to location in the train as well as little screws on them. Be prepared with what seems like a pallet of batteries and jeweler screwdrivers.
No working headlights in the train - part of the fun is running at night... but now I need to find some headlights like on my 7745 high speed train set.
