We love this train! My son is a lego enthusiast and a train enthusiast, so this is great for him. His is six, but with a bit of help, was able to build the whole set. More track is a MUST! We like the ability to be creative - to change the track every time we build it. You have to have more track for that. The remote control has worked great. Be sure you push the forward button more that one time. We were pushing it only once, and it was going so slow, we were disappointed. But then we learned that if you push it multiple times, the speed increases - in fact, the train flies around the track! Amazing! This wasn't in the instructions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great incarnation of the Lego Train System, December 29, 2007

I have been collecting Lego trains for nearly thirty years now, and I have to say that this model holds the same magic that that original train thirty years ago held for me. There are certainly improvements in the system, and the way it is powered has changed somewhat, but it still has the same basics.

One thing to note is that the tracks are not compatible with the tracks from the first era of trains, so if you have the old blue tracks you do have to do some funky things in order to combine the two systems together. The trains, however, do fit in the same gauge so if you have a train from one system it work fine on the tracks from the other system.

This is apparently the end of this generation of Lego train, and a new generation is going to be introduced sometime in the next year or two. Apparently the tracks will still be compatible, which is very good news.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lego's 2006 Cargo Train, October 4, 2010
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

Lego delisted this set in late 2009. This set and #7897 were the of the "RC" generation of trains. The prior generation was the 9 volt series which used electrified track. The next (and current) generation is the Power Functions (PF) series which uses updated components (a new motor and new infrared signaling devices). The battery compartment and infrared receiver of the RC generation is a single, large unit; this is unique to 7897 and 7898. Battery power comes from AA batteries. It is not out of the question to modify the old trains with PF elements (to varying degrees of elegance). 9 volt, RC and PF all use the same gauge track, but the 9 volt track is electrified (RC and PF can still use it). Lego still calls its track "RC."

This set is modeled in the style of a small European cargo train. The set has fantastic playability. It includes an engine (most similar to a Deutsche Bahn Class E44), a crane car, a flat car, box car, hopper, small freight truck, forklift, red sports car, and five mini-figures. The set includes two sets of points (switches), twenty pieces of curved track and eight pieces of straight track. The set requires only batteries to be up and running. Even though this set has been superseded by a newer cargo train, it is still one of the best cargo trains that Lego has produced.

Cheers

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible! Wow is an understatement, December 30, 2007

Our son (5yrs 4mos) is a Lego, vehicle, and train enthusiast. This was the only thing he asked for Christmas. He put everything together himself with VERY little direction from Dad (4 cars he did completely by himself just from the pictorials!). It is lightning FAST, STURDY, and SMOOTH - above and beyond our wildest expectations (other vehicles cranes, loaders, etc were rather delicate more for admiring and not necessarily for playing - but this is made for a 5 year old to PLAY). The remote controller can operate up to 3 trains with one control. Christmas is now 5 days past and my son has only left this train long enough to eat and sleep LITERALLY and that is so unlike him. He is having a blast, and as parents we are marveled at watching his excitement, accomplishment and desire to be creative. This train was WORTH EVERY PENNY - You will not be disappointed! Of all the gadgets, toys and things we have gotten, I've not ever left a review - this I just couldn't ignore - it really is that fantastic. We are looking at getting the Lego passenger train in the near future - it is that awesome. Best of luck.

We bought this product for our 8,5, and 3 year old. Although it really would be best for 8 years old and above, all three of my kids love it. They are young, so they break the trains up, but they use the wheels and base to create their own, unique train cars. The electronic/powered engine is great, but secondary for our kids. My little ones would rather just push the trains around and use their imaginations. However, for an older child, the addition of the power engine really would keep their interest as well. Very highly recommended. It is very expensive and I woudln't recommend it unless I really felt it was worth the money.

My 5 year old grandson and I have become Lego enthusist over the past year or so. When I discovered a this train set that was battery operated with whistles and such, I knew I had to buy it for him. The train set instructions were easy to follow, though he and I built it together (I held the instruction book and he did the rest) he learned how to follow directions. The kit is huge, for the cost it was worth it. The set not only comes with the 5 rail cars but with tracks that switch, a forklift, a flatbed truck, a crane that really operators on a rail car, and a sports car to load on the flat bed truck. There are also several mini figures to play with. I guess one of the draw backs is the track set is very small. It has the oval shape as most trains sets with a little extra for the switch back. I ordered more tracks to make it bigger.

I was worried at first because it was a lego set, the parts would fall off or not stay well, but amazingly it stays together rather well. Of course we have our occasional OOPS, but being Lego's we can easily put it back together and go on.

Enjoy!!!!

My son received this for his birthday yesterday and he was so happy! Assembly took much of the rest of the day and he was still finishing it up this morning. He is seven now and needed his dad's help to build this. The train moves nicely on the track and has a remote control with a diesel horn. He already has the Amtrak lego train and saw this one advertised on that box. He has been asking for it for months. It is not being sold by Lego anymore in the U.S. so it is hard to find. Worth seeking it out though!

This has been the most worthwhile overseas purchase made. Our son begged for this toy and when we couldn't find it in Australia we debated whether it was worth the cash for the o/s purchase with exchange etc...It has been worth every cent. The toy is magnetizing to watch and allows for big kids to little kids to find enjoyment from it....even parents!

This product was well worth the trouble in finding it. After ordering it in early December I got curious when it didn't show on my doorstep. After logging back on to Amazon, I found out that my order had been cancelled 7 days prior. I spent hours finding one available and reordered. Thankfully it showed up on my porch two days before Christmas. My only complaint is that I received an email from Amazon stating that my original order had been cancelled after the holiday was over!

As far as the product goes, it's fantastic. My son has spent time with myself, my husband, his uncle and his grandfather while putting this train together. It's durable, but it's LEGO, so it does come apart. Make sure you save the instructions in case your Siberian Husky decides to get curious and walks through the middle of your LEGO City Train Set!
