**Update December 2013: this set has had a long run and is now finally out of stock at both Amazon (proper) and Lego. It will likely be delisted soon from Lego's catalog. This was a great set, but prices are rising well above the MSRP of 29.99. If you can find them at MSRP, sets #31010 and #31012 are very good. Set 31025, Mountain Hut, will be available 1/1/14, hopefully at the same price as the Log Cabin.**

Lego's Creator line is one of my favorite because the sets avoid the use of really specialized pieces and, instead, focus on the creative use of more basic pieces. This is much closer to the way Lego sets were when I grew up. You can, of course, buy the bulk Lego sets, but I find those boxes provide too many 2x4 bricks and not enough of the one-stud wide bricks and other key elements (like angled roof pieces). Creator sets like this one provide a great mix of very useful pieces, often in colors that are hard to find. And because these come with directions for multiple builds, they encourage rebuilding and experimentation.

This year's first Creator house is a tidy little log cabin (there is another house, #5771 Hillside House, arriving later in the year, as well as a lighthouse island, #5770). This one is on the small side and it is not built on a baseplate but on a number of small plates (this represents a bit of shrinkage compared to years past). But it has a great color scheme, especially the dark roof tiles, and it has plenty of windows. There is a fireplace, one mini-figure, an ingenious kayak, a tree, and a fire pit with a spit. The top lifts off and the back side (of the A-model) opens up like a giant door; my kids have a lot of fun with this latter feature.

This set gives you a little more than 350 pieces for 30 bucks retail, which is a wonderful deal for Legos just in and of itself. However, as a set, it is a somewhat fast and easy build - my 7 year old daughter was able to build it on her own with very little assistance from me in about 2 hours. The cabin is very sturdy once built, for Legos of course. Because the cabin is formed like a house, it is a simple structure to put your mind around, and I think would be an excellent first set for a child that has never used Lego's before, but may be interested in them. My daughter loves this one, and I am very pleased that Lego has finally decided to include a Lego person in these sets, it greatly increases the playability factor.

Bought this set as a gift for my 7 year old granddaughter who happens to be a Lego fanatic. She mentioned not having a Lego set for constructing a house, so it was a 'no-brainer' for me to pick this set. The Amazon price and reputation for quick delivery were also big factors, especially when the gift can be sent directly to a recipient that lives a thousand miles from my home. She loves the Lego Cabin set and already has her eye on more Lego home sets. All my grandchildren (and their parents) love playing with Legos together!

This is a great set. My 4.5-year-old son received it as a Christmas gift. I was worried since the ages on the box are listed as 7-12, but he did very well with just a bit of guidance. Four months later he still does one of the builds at least once a week.

The set strikes a nice balance between building a large structure with basic bricks and having a few special pieces that add some flair. It's also a great demonstration of how the same pieces can be used different ways. (I especially like how the bowed pieces are used for the frame of a canoe in one build and an awning in another.)

Overall I'd recommend this as a great starter set for any child who's graduating out of Duplo into "big kid" Legos.

Granma picked a winner! My 7 year old boy is a whiz at Legos - he can build just about anything, including the much more difficult ones, but this log cabin was his favorite Lego piece at Christmas! All he wanted was more Lego sets. There's no end! His room is full of Lego projects! Apparently a child can use their imagination using the Lego figures (buy separately) very easily, making up stories or pretending. I don't know, but the child sure made me happy with his love for this particular piece, and he had it built in no time at all!

I bought this set when Target first got it in - they only received one and well, being the Lego grabber that I am, I snatched it! It has since become the house favorite - everything from building a boat and to dock it at a nearby river made with Legos, to the chicken roasting over the open fire. The detail to attention to this set is quite overwhelming, complete with the chicken, fire, lights outside the house, and the table and chairs that are included for the inside. The more you complete this set, the more details you find. It's just an awesome build - went together quickly for a master 10-year-old builder, but it has provided so much fun and imagination things ever since. It's very durable, NOT boring, even though I received a groan when he first saw it. The more he looked at it, the more he thought he could "do" something with it. Well, it's been everything from a Dr. Who lookout tower to the cabin for which it was intended but inserted on a train track.

Great, great set, highly recommend!
