Lego's Creator line is one of my favorite because the sets avoid the use of really specialized pieces and, instead, focus on the creative use of more basic pieces. This is much closer to the way Lego sets were when I grew up. You can, of course, buy the bulk Lego sets, but I find those boxes provide too many 2x4 bricks and not enough of the one-stud wide bricks and other key elements (like angled roof pieces). Creator sets like this one provide a great mix of very useful pieces, often in colors that are hard to find. And because these come with directions for multiple builds, they encourage rebuilding and experimentation.
This year's first Creator house is a tidy little log cabin (there is another house, #5771 Hillside House, arriving later in the year, as well as a lighthouse island, #5770). This one is on the small side and it is not built on a baseplate but on a number of small plates (this represents a bit of shrinkage compared to years past). But it has a great color scheme, especially the dark roof tiles, and it has plenty of windows. There is a fireplace, one mini-figure, an ingenious kayak, a tree, and a fire pit with a spit. The top lifts off and the back side (of the A-model) opens up like a giant door; my kids have a lot of fun with this latter feature.Read more ›
The set strikes a nice balance between building a large structure with basic bricks and having a few special pieces that add some flair. It's also a great demonstration of how the same pieces can be used different ways. (I especially like how the bowed pieces are used for the frame of a canoe in one build and an awning in another.)
Overall I'd recommend this as a great starter set for any child who's graduating out of Duplo into "big kid" Legos.
As time has gone by, Lego's gotten a bit more detailed with the creator series and houses and did a (good) thing by including a minifigure, which to me adds a bit more scale to the sets. It also opened the door to more intricate details for the interior and exterior of the sets, and this one isn't an exception. It's given a neat woodsy look with brown and yellow color schemes. The canoe is cute, and easy to build with other blocks, the spit is also a nice touch and the way the blocks are neatly layed out to give the appearance of a log cabin is also quite a nice touch. It's also relatively easy to build, so people of most ages (perhaps 8 and up) can enjoy. Maybe what I like most about the this and other creator sets, is that to me they seem to really fit the spirit of the older lego sets of the 80's and before when you could make many other creations with most of the pieces. This one has instructions for 3.
I'd recommend this one. The price is lower than any of the other creator house sets I've seen, and it's a welcome addition to the series. But like mos tlego sets, as time goes by I'd expect to see the price start to creep up.

I am an adult who plays with Legos... grant it, I loved this set though the tree is stupid... so stupid. Otherwise the cabin is adorable.Published 2 months ago by S. Warren
