5.0 out of 5 stars LEGO Winter Toy shop #10199
Outright, I like this set because of the nice BIG Christmas tree that is included. and some nice minifigs. So what can you expect from this set.

Usually reviews don't have the dimension of the box. I will include it since like me, I order online via Amazon and need to know the computation for the courier costs.

1.0 out of 5 stars If I had all the pieces!
Alot of pieces were missing from the "factory sealed" product. And from the other reviews I can see I am not the only one this happen to. I did contact seller and he said it was factory sealed so not his fault. I would suggest you go elsewhere to buy this or not at all since it would seem there is some packaging issue.

Outright, I like this set because of the nice BIG Christmas tree that is included. and some nice minifigs. So what can you expect from this set.

Usually reviews don't have the dimension of the box. I will include it since like me, I order online via Amazon and need to know the computation for the courier costs.

Box is 18.9 x 2.8 x 14.9 inches and around 2.3 pounds quite a big box.
It has 815 pcs for the set plus some extras as usual when you get the set.
The pieces are grouped into 10 plastic bags.

The set has 1 manual and generally subdivided in making the minifigs, the bench and lamp post, the Christmas Tree and lastly the Toy shop itself.

1. Minifigs: It has 7 minifigs. 2 choirs (1 girl in dress, 1 man, Both in
black), 2 kids (girl/boy) in ice skates, 1 toy maker, 1 kid throwing snowballs (2 faces)
and 1 female adult who is assigned to the Christmas tree.

Other figures are a cat in a scared pose, then the Jack in the box, 2 robot toys and a train plus a gift box. What I like here are the ice skates and the cape for the female choir who also holds a "song book". But what I find dull is that there are no designs on the black dress. Just plain black. I also find amusing are the scarfs for the kid and choir man. An extra piece to put between the body and head. Nice touch. Almost forgot the snowman, basic one with a black hat, they used a white head with no markings.

2. Construction:
a. Bench and lamp post. This one is fairly easy to build and if I may say, basic. What I like is the crystal covering for the lamp. Unfortunately this particular subset easily falls into pieces when moved around since the lamp post is just clipped to the white floor.

b. Christmas tree: Now ths I like better since it has multiple levels with different ways for the parts to put together for each level. Plus you put on the Star icicle on top. And some extra lights and single pegs added to it make it very, vey nice. Customization for the Christmas decorations particularly with the extra pieces make it a different tree every year.

An extra touch is the ladder included which of course you can also place on the other subsets (lamp post, front of toy shop, etc)

c. Toy shop: Now this for obvious reasons has the longest instructions for construction. It has the first floor with a counter, 2 toy stands for the toys found in front of the 2 front windows and a nice fire place with orange flame elements to look like it is burning firewood.

The back is open for you to play with it. It even has a ladder to make your minifig go up to the 2nd floor that is a functional room.

The 2nd floor is a smaller one where the toy maker builds his toys. Complete with rotating chair for the toy maker to look out the window and a table with a hammer and clamp. The brick light is found on top of the second floor room to light it up. Personally I wished it was placed instead on the 1st floor toy display area to make the toys have a spotlight of sort.

Anyway, as I mentioned it is a smaller floor since the rest of the upper section is composed of the ceiling beam with a clock and a small cat figure on top of the clock together with the slanted roof. I appreciate LEGO adding such detail and making it not
plain for the ceiling beam. The roof top are both slanted but somehow I noticed it is a bit easy to pull out and pops out.

As for the fire place, it continues up and out of the toy shop to the chimney. Nice touch with the flat panels you place on different sides of the chimney to give it some contrast and texture.

I also like the large windows for both floors. You can really see the inside of the toy shop.

d. Other items: Most of it I mentioned, the toys, like the robots in particular, the train, simple but great, the snowman, the ladder, ice skates, cat, the 4 pine trees and jack in the box.The signage in front of the shop is included but has no printout nor stickers.

3. Sturdiness: The bench and lamp post falls apart easily, the tree is sturdy except for the Star icicle which I feel will break if you accidentally mishandle it. The toy shop you should hold at the bottom and not pick on the top since as I mentioned the roof tends to pop out easily.

4. My gripes: Not principally on the set but on some LEGO pieces. I noted that there are some minor post production discoloration on some of the pegs. The ones where you see the LEGO print. I noticed that on some pieces. It is very obvious most especially on the brown and black pieces. It does not affect the connection but I was wondering if this particular piece is found on the outside of the set you are building, it will be obvious for its imperfection. I might be too much of a perfectionist but I cant help notice it because it is really very annoying for me.

My other gripe are the clear window glass placed on the window frames, the upper floor windows have some imperfections that make the window "dirty" to look at. Again post production problems with LEGO?

5. Modifiable: Definitely with the minifigs, interchange with the hair, skates, placing different colored pegs on the christmas tree. placement of the ladder, changing toy display etc. For short you can customize the arrangements to make it different every year when I display it during Christmas season. Your imagination is the limit.

So overall, 5 for the whole set, 4.5 for the sturdiness. In comparison with the winter toy bakery, I like this better in terms of the more elaborate construction of the toy shop and I guess due to the toys included. Again a must have if you like seasonal LEGO sets. Hope you can get one still. :)

I got this set last year, it was my first "Christmas" set from LEGO (besides Advent Calendars), and now LEGO is replacing our other little pottery Christmas village that we used to set up every year. With two dogs we can't run the LEGO train around the tree, so we've got a table set up with a small train loop and this set on it and a few bits and pieces from LEGO Advent Calendars.

It comes with a "Santa" in a little swivel chair, working up in his workshop while toys are in display in the store below. The fairly rare "lighted brick" creates a really neat effect if you are displaying in lower lighting. The large tree is also a treat for LEGO fans; while the set comes with the smaller molded trees, the parts to make the larger and much more realistic tree are always interesting, as are the "lights" to put around the tree. Rounding it out are a classic park bench, carolers, and a very nice lamp post.

Coming in at over 800 pieces, it's a bargain for the MSRP, especially considering all the minifigures it comes with and the lighted brick.

It's a shame that the LEGO Company limits releases like this, as you can see a lot of reviewers complaining about jacked up prices on the secondary market, but I think this is what happens when you release a limited number and a different holiday set every year. That said, keep an eye out for the upcoming candy shop... it looks like it might even be better than the Toy Shop.

I bought this last week and started putting it together Friday night right after I picked it up. After organizing my pieces by color and size, I put together the bench and carolers sectin. Then I decided I wanted to prolong the time it would take to assemble the rest.

The next day I started to put the tree and building together. While putting this together I quickly gathered that this set was not meant to be a used as a toy. The basic structure of the design is durable. However, even the slightest touch to the roof or some other parts could make pieces fall. The tree is pretty simple, it's very repetetive, which is to be expected. Not all layers on the tree are securely in place. They are staggered to llok like a "real" Christmas tree.

Overall, I would say that this is a good buy. It was exactly what I expected and worth my time. I can't wait to put it back together for Chrismas. It's my husband and I's first Christmas together, I think we'll make getting Christmas Legos a tradition and put them together every year.

PROS:
-There are many mini-figures. Two of them have skis, two of them are carolers, a grandfather type, children, and more.

-This would fit into a christmas village

-As always, Lego included many intricate details. There are details on the inside and the outside. Even the chimeny (there's a fire in the fire place) has multiple colors in it just like normal stone would.

-There are three gifts under the tree and two in the shop windows. They include an train engine, robots, and a wrapped gift.

CONS:
-I found one slight design error. Or, more so placement error. The chair behind the work bench (it spins!) doesn't fit at the position you're told to place it. I fixed this by moving the chair back a little. Easy fix!

-The durability of some of the external parts is lack, but like I said this seems like a display not a toy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Winter Wonderland, Lego Style!, January 4, 2011

Just in time for the holiday season, Lego has released a pair of Christmas/Winter-themed sets that will (hopefully) become the first in a growing collection. The larger of the two 2010 sets is this Winter Toy Shop, which features a gorgeous, highly detailed, 2-story toy shop (complete with lighted workshop area, detailed chimney and snow-covered roof, a park bench with street light, huge Christmas tree with ladder, decorations and gifts, and seven minifigures (including a pair of carolers).

Complexity - The set includes 815 pieces, and nearly all of them are very tiny. It didn't help that the bags of pieces were not numbered for modular assembly. It took more than three hours (and as many glasses of wine) to build this set, and at times felt like assembling a huge jigsaw puzzle. As always, my son assembled the minifigures.

Playability - We bought this to decorate the mantle, not for play, but my son did have a great time with the minifigures and had some time to enjoy the rest of the set before we packed it away with the rest of the holiday decorations. It's a reasonably sturdy set, but you can tell it was designed with a display function in mind.

This is a beautiful Lego set, and starting a holiday line is a great idea. I'm already looking forward to unpacking this next December. Hopefully there will be one or two new sets to add to the collection by then.

This was a the top of my daughter's Christmas wish list. I couldn't find it in the stores, and it was even sold out at the Lego website. Luckily I was able to purchace it through Amazon. I paid more money than it would have been at the Lego website, but it arrived quickly, in plenty of time to wrap and put under the tree for Christmas morning. My daughter loved putting it together, and it makes a nice Christmas decoration!

We have four children (2-9 years) who love legos. This is a great set because of the people and animals. The store is being well played with as well. We don't do battery operated toys (too busy to keep replacing them) so not sure how the light block works. This set is very girl friendly.

I gave this to my 8 yr. old grandson before Christmas and he was thrilled to assemble it and use it as part of their Christmas decorations. He is amazing at putting these many parts together quickly. It is darling and I would like to get the other buildings in the set but it is cost prohibitive.

My daughter (10) and I started working on building this set Thanksgiving morning. We took all the little pieces out and sorted a few pieces, but we couldn't resist building right away. The people blocks were easiest to find, so we built those first. Then we started looking at the directions that came with the set and followed those. It was fairly easy to put the blocks together, but my daughter did have some trouble at first. As I went off to start getting ready for Thanksgiving lunch, my daughter put together the larger Christmas tree. My daughter made a few mistakes and was able to put it together correctly after I helped her pull the wrong blocks apart. That was one problem we had with a lot of the flat block pieces - I broke a few nails trying to pull blocks apart. My daughter is a bit young for the recommended age on the package. Since she is in a Lego robotics club at school, I let her work on it alone. If your child has experience following detailed instructions, you may be able to let them work on it without supervision, but the younger children will still need some help. I personally had a lot of fun putting this scene together with my daughter, and I plan on buying the other Lego Holiday/Winter sets.
