4.0 out of 5 stars Toddler fun but needs supervision
My daughter received this train set for Christmas. We hoped it would help keep Daddy's lego train safer. It absolutely keeps her interest (she's just turned 3) and even our infant (8 months) is entranced by watching the train.

3.0 out of 5 stars Duplo 5609 a disappointment
We purchased this Lego set for our 4 yo grandson, who has other Lego blocks orginially used by our children. The set is labeled as appropriate for 2-6. I must say that it would be an exceptional 2 yo who could put this thing together. The instuctions are confusing because they show products not included in this set and require the purchase of other sets to complete what...

My daughter received this train set for Christmas. We hoped it would help keep Daddy's lego train safer. It absolutely keeps her interest (she's just turned 3) and even our infant (8 months) is entranced by watching the train.

Benefits-
The train is EASY to use. The simple push button stop and start is a cinch for her. If she stands in front of the train and it hits her foot it stops and turns off as well. If you pick it up, the wheels stop too- so we've not had any hair tangling issues (hooray!)

The duplo bricks are easy to assemble -- even for her, her buildings may not look like the pictures, but she has fun- so that is what matters.

Mixed Feelings--
The tracks are easy to put together piece by piece-- but they also come apart really easily as well. A big issue on the carpet, but less of one on wood floors. I think if you have a lego table, you can fix them down on there which would solve the issue entirely.

The track set-up(s) you can assemble with the pieces in the box is great- but my kids destroyed the box and just start attaching pieces somewhat haphazardly-- it still works, but doesn't make a loop. On that note, the train will happily run right off the end of a track piece and KEEP GOING until it hits something or 2 minutes pass. This leads to a lot of giggling at my house- but may not be your idea of fun.

Negatives--
The train has some built in safety mechanisms- it stops when you pick it up and shuts off after 2 minutes of running until you re-press the button. HOWEVER! My 3 year old did figure out how to hurt herself with it. She likes to run the train across the floor, the table, etc and decided to run it on her arm. The train wheels started turning and pulled in a piece of her skin- she was left with a small bruise from the pinch. (Dumb me in trying to figure out how the train "bit" her, did the same thing to myself too- it HURTS!)

Train time is now more supervised so we don't have that happen again- but you may want to be aware and watch for similar behaviors in your little ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1st Duplo Set, January 24, 2010

My son who is almost 4 loves trains. He has over 200 different Thomas trains with every track tunnel or bridge you could imagine. I thought if anything was going to get him interested in legos it would be a train set. He received this for Christmas and has enjoyed it so much. I think it has really helped with his manual dexterity. I had hoped using his hands to put the pieces together whould help him now that he is trying to learn to write. It holds his attention well and you can either push the train and truck or turn the train on and let it go by itself. You can even pretend to fill the train with diesal oil and it makes a gurgling noise.
Very well built toy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Expensive but good, January 27, 2010

It's expensive, but my kids really do love this lego set. We've combined it with some other Lego duplo sets (e.g. a Thomas set), which makes it even more fun. They love having the train run on its on (unlike the Thomas sets, which have to be pushed), and "filling it up". I like how Lego makes everything fit; for example, the truck's wheels also fit on the track (so the train can push the truck around the tracks). It's also easy to put Thomas the Train's body on the front part of this set's electric train engine, and make "Electro-Thomas"

My boy is 30 months and he loves this set. I have a few suggestions for people who buy it:

First, you'll want to use epoxy or hot-melt glue to fasten the green parts to the engine. Although it's cool to be able to exchange these, in practice they just come off every time you try to lift it. Glue it and forget it. The same goes with the gas station - it's better to glue it all up and keep it whole than to always be rebuilding it.

Second, you will want more tracks, but Lego doesn't give you a huge choice in tracks. You can get some more straight and curved pieces, but you'll soon discover that you need junctions or crossovers. Lego doesn't have this very worked out. If you want to go to the next level, you'll have to buy a number of different sets and put much more time and effort into designing a track configuration, which is good when the child is 4 or 5, I suppose. It's nice that the trains and trucks are compatible, so getting trucks is a good investment.

Finally, it works wonderfully with rechargeable batteries. One charge lasts three weeks at our house. It's best on a floor (rather than carpet) and stays together nicely. I highly recommend it for 2 years and up.

My 21 month old son received this for Christmas from Santa and he LOVED it! Easy for him to start and stop, and connect the cars. It kept his attention and focus, plus helped his motor skills. We are planning to get more Duplo to expand his train collection. Also Amazon has the best price, and no sales tax!

This Lego train set is wonderful! My 4 year old loves trains, and this is his new favorite. What is really neat about this train, is that if it gets derailed or hits anything, it stops and turns itself off and doesn't keep running like all of the other trains we have. Way to go Lego! He is having a blast building track and changing the pieces around. A wonderful new toy! Even my 18 month old can put the track together, not the case with other sets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Son's first train set, December 14, 2009

My son received this Duplo train set (5609) for his second birthday. He really enjoys watching the train go around the track and stopping it in front of the fueling station to hear the "glug glug" noise when he fuels it up. He also loves raising and lowering the traffic barriers on the track and driving the freight truck in and out. His favorite thing however is derailing the trains, crashing them into the truck, taking all the structures apart and then putting everything back together again (with a little help from mom). Thankfully the pieces are all really sturdy and have held up will to his abuse

At two years old he is a bit small for some of the fiddlier parts, such as twisting the small wheels to raise and lower the hook on the crane and to turn the conveyor belt. I could see him growing into some of these parts of the toy however, and thus hopefully maintaining his interest in this toy. We will probably extend the track in the future with some of the add-ons, although certain pieces, like the bridge, seem pretty expensive to me.

All in all, this has been a great first train set for a young child and I think he will enjoy it for a long time to come.

I'm writing it as my 3-year old is loading cargo onto the train with the crane. He's been doing it for two days straight, with only occasional toilet and food breaks. The first toy he's that obsessed with... I highly recommend it!!!

We bought this for our son when he was two. He's almost four and still loves playing Lego Train. It's great for building his fine motor skills and it's been fun to watch his Lego creations get more elaborate over time. Plus, it's a great excuse for my husband and I to get down on the floor and play Legos! Who doesn't love that? We ended up getting additional track (straight and curved) so we can create longer tracks. I'm considering the LEGO Duplo Legoville Train Bridge (3774) but not sure I want to spend that much money for a few more pieces.

My 3-year old loves it. It compatible with other Thomas Lego duplo products and makes the tracks much longer. He plays for hours.
