Fortaan comes with a whopping 11 rooms: 2 generic rooms with torches in the corners, 2 rooms with a little table, book, and chair, 2 fortress rooms with crenellated parapets, an entrance area with a tree and a drawbridge, a feast room with a fireplace and a chicken leg (no kidding), an enchanted pool with a tree and a frog, a prison room with a barred door, and a throne room with banners and columns. It also includes 15 microfigures: 4 heroes, 6 goblins, 4 armored goblins, and 1 goblin king. For treasure, there are gold pieces, potions (speed, strength, luck, and health), 2 treasure chests, and a cool microfigure helmet.
There are 3 books in the box: the standard instruction book, a rule book, and an "adventure" book with a mini-comic and three suggested dungeon layouts. The dungeon layouts are not presented in any particular order, but if you look at the bits that are supposed to be included in each one, you can assemble them into a mini-campaign that ends with a confrontation in the throne room with the goblin king.
Each hero comes with a color-coded hero pack for storing their health points, gold pieces, potions, weapons that they've purchased from the store, and enemies vanquished. My son and I have a house rule that you can turn in every 4 vanquished enemies for 1 piece of gold.Read more ›
What is really nice about the Heroica system in comparison to other Lego games is that it's even more diverse. You can play each game in the series separately or you can combine any number of them to create larger games. This is well worth doing. We have three of the four Heroica games and each one contains at least one new element: new creature types, new heroes, and other objects like potions and weapons racks. What's particularly nice about Castle Fortaan is that it includes four different heroes, all four potion types, and a weapons rack, so it is the most complex of the four games in the series. While I wouldn't say that this makes the game educational in a traditional sense, I like that it encourages my daughter to be analytical and strategic in her decisions. Before we even play the game, the three of us often end up talking about the advantages of playing as the knight versus playing as the barbarian, and the addition of the weapons adds another layer of complexity. This really has helped us to teach my daughter how to view moves from a variety of angles and to weigh her options, resulting in her moving beyond the simple Candyland sort of approach to games and into the realm of strategy.Read more ›
The beauty of the Lego games is it is easy to expand the rules how you want, and they give you hints on how to get started. I always play by the base rules first, but I see a couple tweaks that could be made with this game already. Lego encourages you to make those tweaks! They encourage some simple compaining where you keep items and gold between missions, and encourage a simple game master approach where one player controls the monsters so they can be more interactive (instead of standing around). Take it as far as you want.
This game is similar to the old Hero Quest from 1989, where you have a tiled room approach and move your hero through the dungeon defeating monsters and collecting treasure. Lego makes the game more fun and approachable to children. The game play directions are only 2 pages long, typical of any other game. If you are familiar with some role playing games, the directions might be hundreds of pages long.
I bought the Castle of Fortaan first as it was the largest set, and figured it would be a good starting point. I intend to buy all the sets now that I have played it a couple times. My son loves setting up the board and doing his own imaginary play when we aren't actively playing the game "by the rules".
I highly recommend the Heroica series of games for kids with a strong imagination.
