5.0 out of 5 stars An awesome castle that my boys love!
My two youngest sons absolutely love this castle. They are 5 and 7 years old and both of them say this is the best Lego toy they have ever owned. My 15 year old who lent a hand during the build also thinks it is a pretty cool castle too.

Ok, now time for the disclaimer. This toy has 933 pieces, many of them small. It is rated for 7-14 year old kids. In my...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but limited interest
My 9 year son eagerly put this together over a couple of days. He says it took about 3 hours total. Completed, it looks like the box. I know he had that initial interest, and was proud of his accomplishment, but since he completed it, it has sat where he left it. He just hasn't found as much use for it as his other Lego collections. He's constantly building and rebuilding...

In my opinion if you are getting it for a 7 or 8 year old and they are not advanced (I know, my kids and your kids are very advanced, but I am speaking to those other parents now) you may want to plan on spending some time on the floor putting this castle together with the kids.

This castle was built over a 5 hour period. The majority of it was completed by my 5 and 7 year olds. Max, the 5 year old did most of the searching for pieces and Jake, the 7 year old did most of the assembly. Mom stepped in for a few of the tough parts, David, my 15 year old lent a hand, and good ole Dad (me) lent the least amount of help, but I did touch a few of the pieces and most of my assistance was guiding them in the assembly to help them figure it out.

I asked my sons what they liked the most about this castle and they said,
-the drawbridge that moves.
-the gate that cranks up and down.
-the catapults. Of course, it shoots stuff.
-the Knights.

This is a very good quality toy, but then again, aren't all Lego sets? The detail is excellent but this castle may be a little on the fragile side for any heavy handed play. We had one incident where one of the Knights jumped off the coffee table and slammed down on one of the castle ramparts and we had to rebuild part of that section. The kids are upstairs playing with it now, and as long as they are not slamming it the castle is holding up just fine.

I am pretty sure they will get endless hours playing with this castle.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Big Hit with LEGO Fans, September 18, 2010

My 11 year-old LEGO fan son started working on this the moment he came home from school yesterday. He is just now done with the set.

His friend Jaxon came over today and they both worked on it and had a blast.

The consensus is, "This is such a great set. It has really awesome mini figs."

And it does. It comes with eight, very detailed (LEGO style) figures. There are catapults and lots of other really cool working parts. There's even a rat for the dungeons.

Visit our pictures in customer images to see some of the details in this set.

"It is so worth the money. It has a drawbridge that goes up and down and a gate too. The white horse can be a unicorn with the right armor. You can launch stuff from the towers. And you can have epic battles with the mini figs. The dragon knight is just plain awesome."

"This castle set is by far the best."

It has been a big hit for two LEGO fans that usually like to create their own stuff from large piles of mismatched LEGOS. With 933 pieces and just under $100, it makes each piece just over 10 cents. If you've ever priced out LEGO pick-a-brick pieces, you know that this is a good price.

The final message from them is, "Just buy it -- period."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great LEGO Set - Highly Recommended!, September 19, 2010

The LEGO "Kindoms King's Castle" is a very cool set that has provided us hours of fun, both in building the castle and in defending it from the evil Dragon Knight and minions! The age range is listed as "7 - 14", but kids in the lower ranges of that will definitely need adult help as this is a bit of complex build. This is a large set (933 pieces) and it took us just over 3 1/2 hours to complete it.

That being said, once it is built even the youngest will get a kick out playing with the cool working catapults, working drawbridge, and LEGO characters (including The King, his 4 soldiers, a horse\unicorn, The Dragon Knight, and his 2 soldiers). I hate to admit it, but both my wife and I really enjoyed lobbing the round catapult blocks at the castle and trying to knock over the little soldiers!

It should be noted that this set also does take up a good bit of space and needs some additional room for the catapults to work. There are also quite a few small loose pieces as well (treasure chest, gems, etc). We don't ever have very small children over, but if you do it would be easy to guess that this set would likely prove a STRONG temptation for them (PLEASE heed the "Small Parts Warning"!).

This is a high quality set that is worth every bit of the asking price! My son is already planning a stop motion video using this set, which should be very fun indeed!

Highly Recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, November 3, 2010

Wow, I remember the days of growing up with legos, construx, and blocks. As much as I enjoyed those when I was a kid, this is a whole new level. Now as a father with a 4 year old son, and a 2 year old daughter, this lego set has brought me back to my childhood. Seriously, WOW! This is such a blast to be able to put together, play with, and seriously, as a parent, have a good time with your kids. We'll sit and get this thing out, and play for what seems like 30 minutes, and we've been playing for hours. It's a blast. My son loves how flexible the set is. WIth so many pieces - 933 Lego pieces, eight figures (king, soldiers, and knight), a wind-up gate, drawbridge and prison, three catapults of various sizes, and a throne and treasure chest, and a white horse, there is so much you can do with this.

If you've never set your eye on anything like this before, it's worth it. Might be priced higher than any other lego/block set that you've ever bought, but you and your kids will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modular Lego Castles?, October 21, 2010

Full disclosure, as I am in my late 20s I am not the typical demographic that this product targets. That said the person most likely to read this review is a parent, or relative, considering if this would be a good choice for their child (grandchild etc.) Anyways I hope y'all find this review helpful.

When I was younger (up until I was about 16) I was an avid Lego builder. As I was (and still am) also a fantasy buff I spent a lot of time playing with the Mid-evil themed Lego sets. You could say in fact that castles were my wheelhouse. So when vine gave me an opportunity to review this set I jumped.

My initial thoughts all concerned the differences between the sets I grew up with and this one. When I was younger each set would come with a large green base board on which you would typically build your structures. Sometimes, these were simply large square green boards, sometimes, the castles would come with custom baseboards that placed them over a steep sided cliff for better protection. This set however, came with no foundation boards at all. Although this initially had me perplexed, as I began construction it became clear why this was the case.

Unlike the castles of yore, which were one piece and provided limited axis to the inside of the castle, this Castle is actually a collection of modular components, the main gate is one, the towers are each one, etc. The components are each build on their own bases and connected via lego sockets. There are several advantages to this structure. The first being that you can easily open up a part of the castle to hold a battle inside or to use the inner workings of the castle in some other way. You can also arrange the castle in various configurations as long as you line up the connectors, providing for more versatile play. The downside of this is that you can't really move the whole structure without disconnecting it and putting it back together every time. Moreover, as the base pieces are a more specialized (specific) size, the options for freeform building are more limited.

I have tabulated the rest of my pro/con feelings below.

Pro:
1. Inclusion of elements such as the drawbridge which can be winched upwards, or the portcullis which can be set at various heights encourage thought about engineering and design as well as introduce young ones to the way gears work.
2. Came with a good collection of Lego characters including several "good" guys as well as several "bad" guys, so you'll have everything you need to jump in and play, no need to buy another set so that you have an opponent for your hero.
3. While the structures you build may not be durable there is little that is more enduring then a Lego block, so you'll have these pieces when your grandkids come to visit.
4. The catapults are fun to play with but don't have enough zip to cause damage to anybody which is good when your kids start firing legos at each other.
5. Very good collection of bricks for the castle oriented builder. Plenty of free form creation should be possible, of course the inclusion of a large base plate would help.
6. Alternating size of pieces and long strips that go across the tops of walls to bind them together helps teach good construction technique (with the appropriate prompting from a parent)

Cons:
1. Catapults will likely result in some lost pieces, and may be dangerous if you have a second child who is way below the recommended age (choking hazard).
2. The collection of bricks in this set are a little specialized and monochromatic to be useful to many other sets.
3. I found the instructions a little unclear, as there are absolutely no words. I guess Lego wanted to avoid having to print things in 40 languages but they could at least have been more clear about when you are supposed to duplicate certain structures you are building.

Overall I found this set to be satisfying. Honestly the only other thing I can really ask is this. When will Lego finally get smart and offer sets that come with permanent lego storage. If they offered this set, or an option to buy (at a premium) the set + a container for storing all the blocks by their type (1x4, 2x2 etc.) I think most people would pick the second option. That way you don't have to spend 30 minutes looking for that missing piece in the general lego bin, just a thought. Oh and every set over $100 should contain one of those lego removers they use to sell. It's the only way to get one of those flat 1x2s off of a flat 4 x X (if you don't know what I'm referring to just ignore that part).

Anyways I think any child interested in knights will love, and get repeated use out of this. Enjoy.

We got this for our nephews 12 and 10.
They have been having a wonderful time with it.

Watching them create is what it is all about. I forget sometimes the kind of things I built with Tonka Toys, Lincoln Logs and Erector sets when I was a kid.

Knights of the Round Table and Lord of the Rings are not beyond the imagination of kids with this set.

Lots and lots of pieces, many of them super-small Be aware of that and keep really small kids away.

Make sure you shoot some video while your kids are creating, it will become a treasured memory.

It is certainly worth the money, but I do wish these sets were cheaper.

With four sons, you better believe my house is covered in Lego's... we love them! My boys constantly request trips to the Lego store to look at new sets and see what they would like to collect. I was always hesitant to get this Lego set due to the price. I wanted a guarantee that they would like it. Well, they loved it! They had such a good time working together to complete it. They are very proud of their creation, and they play with it often. When we look at large sets, the amount of people it contains is always a factor. My nine-year-old was so excited to see how many kingdom people it contained. My boys also appreciate the bags of pieces being separated and numbered in correspondance with the directions. All in all, this is great addition to our Lego collection. It's a must-have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hey, gimme a break. It's lego... the king of toys... but pricey..., September 24, 2010

A couple years ago, we got a similar kind of toy from an "off-brand" "lego wannabe" and the quality and durability and flexibility of that toy was totally left wanting.

Enter the lego castle. It's just made better than the competing products. The flexibility of lego is such that you can ignore the directions and be creative, while you learn about tolerances and things like that that I think helps you with all KINDS of educational challenges... or you can follow the directions and learn more about following plans, about delayed gratification, and about how things fit together in sometimes predictable and sometimes unusual ways.

Did I mention that this is an insane amount of fun for a father to do with an 8-year old? INSANELY fun...

there is no downside except for the price. I shudder at the prices of Lego, but the "almost lego" stuff out there is not good enough, and ends up being money wasted, because nobody will play with it.

This is simply a fantastic fun toy! I'd only give it 4 stars because I think it's AWFULLY expensive for a plastic toy, but value doesn't figure into Amazon's rankings, so I can't help but to say that this is possibly a perfect toy.

I always wanted to try a Lego set and finally settled on this one. It was tons of fun to put together (I'm 24 by the way). I can understand why it's 7 and up though, this does take some concentration and effort. I would definitely get it again or give it as a gift to a Lego lover!
