Once built, I have to say, this is really a great looking set. It's smallish in fact the Lego booklets even encourage buying additional sets to make it larger, which is kind of redundant if you ask me, but it's almost comparable to the Helms Deep set which is twice as large. The design however is awesome with the black color pattern and the intricate series of spikes.

My real gripe with the set however, is that it's very fragile, and can be very flimsy when trying to put together. The instructions require you to attach the gates onto the main platform, before the gates are fully built. This makes pressing down on the pieces to attach them very a very delicate task. Several times when building, for me, that gate portion completely fell apart as I was trying to attach a certain piece. It was very frustrating. Even when fully built, the model is still a bit wobbly, and doesn't feel like it's completely solid. This is very disappointing, because, like said, it's a really cool looking set.

As for the minifig selection, you get a good group, but not as big as you'd expect for a set this size. The inclusion of two animals, a horse and an eagle, is most likely the reason for this. But we get Gandalf in his White incarnation finally, and Aragorn in slightly more kingly attire (the other sets make him so scruffy you'd almost think he was one of the villains). Then finally, the very obscure character The Mouth of Sauron. Because his part was cut from the Jackson movie (tho I believe it's included in the special editions). You might think he's a Nazgul, but he's not. Just a mortal warrior who speaks for Sauron. He's really a great looking figure, with a menacing, Joker-like grin.

In all. Not the best of the Lego LOTR sets. It's fragility sets it back a point for me. Spend your money on Helms Deep or The Mines of Moria first. However, it is an inspired set, with an intricate and great looking design.

Everyone loves Legos and LOTR. I think generally Legos are over-priced, but you cannot beat them for consistency and quality. All of us--husband and wife and our kids--played with Legos when we were young and we love the more adult themes they are coming out with that tie into the Peter Jackson movies. More than once, the kids have said, like they were old folks reminiscing, that they wished those themes were available back in their day.

My sons are hard to shop for now that they are adults; prefer gift cards and cold hard cash. I bought these for my son, as part of a 21st birthday gift, themed for adult stuff and kid stuff. (Hint: adult stuff had alcohol in it). These were the "kid" part. He liked them a LOT. Thanked me more than once and his girlfriend says they're playing with them practically every day now that it's summer and they don't have classes. Really pleased!

Picked this up for 50.99 on Kmart.com, and my son loves it. DO NOT buy this for more than the MSRP of 59.99. It's still new, so the price gouging is at a high for this set right now. Wait for more to become available. Again, it's a great Lego set at $50-60, and if you're looking to spend more than $60, there are bigger and more complex sets for that price range.

Amazing set. Some say it could be bigger, but now that it's only 45$ on Amazon it's a steal and I really like the size. You get Gendalf the white (hope they don't include him in other sets, which will make this an absolute must for LOTR fans), an eagle and mouth of Sauron on a horse. The gate is very detailed and a bit boring to build, but the tower building is awesome and fun. So the only thing that is a bit down for this set is the build. Overall it looks great! Recommended! Just don't buy it for 60-70$!

I wish it could have more than two orcs , but I like how they put the stones on the side because not all the sets have that.
