This is my daughter's favorite LOTR Lego set so far, and she's thirteen. Not only does it have a good deal of mini-figures for play once the set is complete, but has freestanding weapon to boot. It certainly wasn't the most challenging set she has put together by far, but the catapult actually works and rolls, and there were plenty to figures to wage a battle with once it was completed. The castle stands easily, even on carpet. I would recommend this set for any LOTR fan, Lego collector, and anyone who enjoys interactive play, "big" kid and "little" kid alike.

but this set won't mesh well with Kingdom's sets.

I bought this set from the LEGO website, bundled with The Battle of Helm's Deep (9474). In addition to a free shipping promotion, I received double points, a poster, and a small airplane. This set will make a good display piece in my apartment.

PACKAGING:
This set contains one instruction manual that is about 75 pages long. The set is split up into two bags. The first bag builds the four Uruk-hai (evil?) soldiers, along with a ballista. The second bag builds the two Rohan (good?) soliders, the horse, and the section of wall. The instruction manual is not attached to cardboard; you will probably want paperweights.

MINIFIGURES:
All of the Uruk-hai minifigures have red faces; they will not work well in Kingdom's sets unless you have extra heads or keep their helmets on. Two of the Uruk-hai soldiers have large battleaxes, chest plates, and a new style of helmet. The other two have a shield and a sword (both are new to LEGO), one has the new style helmet, the other has long black hair. They all use the same legs and chest pieces.

Both Rohan soldiers have red/orange hair. Both have the same style helmet, one is leafed in gold. One has a bow and arrow, the other has a spear, shield, and dark green cape. The spear looks to be unique to this series, the head of the spear is silver/gray and the shaft is brown. It is all one piece.

The horse is brown. A special feature of this horse is that it's back half (legs and tail) is able to pivot, along with its head. This allows the horse to rear up on its hind legs. One thing not apparent (and a nice feature) is that the horse WILL balance on a level surface, even with a minifigure riding it. The horse's saddle comes with a new sword....

BALLISTA:
The ballista comes with two grapple hooks. It's wheels are actually two round plates stuck together (which is a bit of a disappointment). It has a slider which supposedly shoots the grapple hooks, I haven't had any luck getting them to pop out more than an inch. The hooks are not very well made, don't handle roughly (they will break easily!) Don't expect much distance. The ballista has some nice decoration, which includes three flat plates with wood prints already attached (no stickers!)

WALL:
The wall's base measures 16x6 dots, and is about 9 blocks high. The wall is highly decorated, with a new *stone* exterior style 1x2 brick. Those aren't plates in the picture. The wall has a slit in the middle so the archer can *fire* arrows throw it, and two "windows" on the sides. In the center of the wall is a standard catapult, along with three cylinders to fire. This part actually works, a good flick and the cylinder will go 4-5 feet! Not shown on the wall is a set of stairs in back, and enough space for minifigures to stand. At the sides of the wall are connecting pieces, so you can extend your LOTR castle sets.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
This set has a lot of decoration, has a bunch of minifigures, a new horse, and quite a few play features. It also includes a few new weapons and a few new stone bricks. At a MSRP of 29.99 for 257 pieces, it is a bit pricey, but if you're going to lay siege to Helm's Deep, I'd call it a must. Read more ›

9471 The Uruk-hai Army is a 257 piece LEGO building block set that was initially released in May of 2012 with a LEGO retail store price of $29.99. It is part of the first wave of releases in the LEGO Lord of the Rings collection, and contains six minifigures, a horse, pieces for a rolling "hook shooter," pieces for a fortress wall, and numerous weapons/accessories. The minifigures include two members of the army of Rohan (Eomer and a generic soldier) along with four Uruk-hai (a sort of fantasy super orc).

When you first look at this set, you'll probably think to yourself that it is pretty boring. I mean, most LotR fans aren't jumping up and down to get hold of this set's "exclusive" Eomer figure (half probably don't even remember who he is). The figures look interesting, but they aren't particularly unique. AND THAT IS THE BEAUTY OF THIS SET! First, it is an army builder - meaning that, if you want to build a big army of Uruk-hai, this is the set to buy with its four Uruk-hai warriors (it has a lower price point than even The Orc Forge set). There are also two Rohan army members, so you'll be expanding that side as well! The second big aspect of this set is that it is a fortress EXPANDER. The set contains grey brick pieces that, if put together as instructed, easily lock together with similarly-built wall pieces from other sets to form much longer walls - say, the walls of a huge fortress! Even if you don't follow the instructions, the grey pieces of the walls will work very well with other sets - you can free-build a castle or fort to your heart's desire....

Note that, while the Uruk-hai will easily meld with other LEGO fantasy army soldiers (such as those in the Castles line), the Rohan soldiers will have a slightly bigger problem blending in due to their cream-flesh coloring (most LEGO minifigs are yellow unless they are in a licensed set, such as this one).

Rating: *IF* you are looking to build an army and expand a castle/fortress set you already own.. 5 out of 5 Stars (you'll probably want to buy more than one of this set). If not, you will probably want to pick up a different LEGO LotR set. Read more ›

This is a fantastic set from my current favorite Lego theme, The Lord of the Rings. I think it's great that kids are able to have a Lego theme from such an iconic literary and film classic. As with all Lego sets, the pieces are of the very highest quality and will last for YEARS of play. The set contains both "good" and "bad" guys, so it's really a great option for kids who are looking to stage a battle right out of the box. I highly recommend this set, along with the rest of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit lines from Lego!
