We just got this Lego Holiday Train, with the 9V power conversion kit, and we are totally in love with it. Our two sons, ages 10 and 7, put it together without much parental help in about 4 hours of Lego-building fun.

In typical Lego fashion, it is very detailed: the gifts that ride in the open car are really cute and fun to assemble. The kids love the mini figures that come with it, and they really love manning the well-designed remote control. We all are impressed with how fast the train can move around the tracks without derailing.

We just ordered another box of straight tracks to better able the train to maneuver around our Christmas tree. We highly recommend the power kit to make this train even more magical. We expect the Lego Holiday Train will be a family tradition for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun!, October 4, 2008

I had a lot of fun putting this little gem together even at my ripe old age of 58! It's very durable and lends itself to customizing quite readily. I've added more Lego mini-figs and more gifts to the already abundant supply provided. Just let you imagination run wide! I bought a motor, controller, and track and was delighted with the smooth operation. I collect HO scale trains which I enjoy immensely but this is so much more fun! ENJOY!

I bought this as a gift and first off, it is packaged nicely and quite impressive in the box. The person whom I bought this for asked for any Lego set and I thought this would be a nice holiday gift and possibly tradition. After opening she was very pleased and surprised, a warning though, apparently LEGO sells these direct for possibly cheaper. Anyway, we did put it together over the break in about four days with ample help. It was great to build and bond with the family and the final product is very sleek and nice. I would recommend this highly. KM

4.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you have spare lego parts if adding an engine, December 22, 2008

This kit is pretty sweet, but if you're looking to make this train motorized, be warned: this kit does not include the motor nor instructions on how to add the motor. Granted, that's part of the fun, but you need to make sure you have some spare lego parts around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, but not worth over $100, not that many unique pieces, October 5, 2010
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars

I love the train, it is awesome, but I am not seeing enough unique pieces to make it worth as much as is now being asked (which is significantly over original retail price).
One can buy train pieces on the used market, or even multiple existing Lego train sets, and obtain the needed pieces to build an even better Holiday train.

I highly recommend against buying this set, for more than its original retail (which was about $89, and then it sold for half of that from Lego.com.)

The current Toy Story train has many pieces that are well suited to building a pretty awesome holiday train.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lego's Holiday Special for 2006, October 4, 2010
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: LEGO Make & Create Holiday Train: 965 pcs (Toy)
Lego often produces special sets for the Winter holidays. In 2009 it was a toy shop. This year, 2010, it is a bakery. In 2006 it was this train. The train was a great value when it was produced, but it has become increasingly rare and thus of interest primarily to collectors. The set was produced back when Lego's trains were still running on 9 volt electrified track, but since this train was not motorized, it was unaffected by Lego's subsequent changeover to battery-powered motors and non-metallic track.

The engine is a smart little green design with a fantastic tender (no skimping, it has three sets of wheels). The four train cars (a coach, gondola, hopper (?), and caboose) are fully proportioned and loaded with people (7), gifts and Christmas trees. I give this set four stars instead of five because the styling of the cars is a bit blocky. It would have benefited from the use of curved slopes. The cars are just not as nicely rendered as the engine and tender.

The set works fine as a push train, but you can also motorize it with the latest "Power Function" parts. You will need a motor unit, a batter, an infrared receiver and an infrared controller. You can also add lights. These parts are not widely carried by retailers, but you can get them directly from Lego.

Cheers

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Compatibility!, January 4, 2009
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: LEGO Make & Create Holiday Train: 965 pcs (Toy)
I purchased this train as a gift for my husband. I did not purchase the 9V motor or tracks that it would require to run. It turns out I did not need to. My husband had purchased the starter set for the new remote control Lego trains for me for Christmas. We were worried that the holiday train would not run on the "non-9V" tracks. We assembled the holiday train anyway thinking we could use it as decoration. We were extremely excited to find that the holiday train fit perfectly onto the "non-9V" track. The magnetic connectors on both sets allowed our new locomotive (remote controlled) to pull our holiday train cars.

We have even disassembled the remote-controlled locomotive and rebuilt it using the holiday train locomotive instructions so that both sets together now look like one big holiday train.

Aside from the condition of the box when the train arrived -- obviously opened and retaped -- the entire set was complete and the train runs great!

This is a simple, but fun Lego toy to put together and it will bring you years of enjoyment. I like the fact that it can be modified to work with the 9v Lego motor and transmitter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lego Christmas Train, January 6, 2012

We bought it as a Christmas Surprise, with hopes to turn it into a Christmas tradition (set it up every year under the tree). We went this way as Lego has been putting out Christmas Villages for the past few years- so we hope to collect them each year, and build our display. * Lego no longer makes this train, so I had to pay premium to find it, and to make it operational as a remote control train, I had to be creative and do some tweeking, but it was worth it.

This train has been with my son for four years. he built it with the instruction manual, but it also had a 9 volt conversion kit, they forgot to include the instructions but he just built it with the 9 volt at the front without instructions. The only time we have had problems is this year the metal volt readers had some problems from years of use, but we fixed it easily
