5.0 out of 5 stars Lego Marvel Superheroes: Building a Great Game October 22, 2013
By Captain
Platform for Display:Nintendo Wii U| Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
I'm going to start this review off with a disclaimer. Not only am I a Marvel Fanboy, I'm a LEGO fanboy, and LEGO Marvel minifigures are already lining the shelves in my room. None the less, I'm going to give the game a fair and honest review.
As soon as you turn on the game you get a glimpse of what it's all about. The game opens (if you don't press start!) with a little story narrative that introduces the plotline of the game. When we start a new game we're shown a cut scene that tells us more about what we're up against. The first level is the same one we've seen a million times, fighting Sandman at Grand Central station. It's the same level you see in almost every trailer for the game, and the same level you could demo in stores.

Playing the game is just like any other LEGO game. You have your basic hitting, punching or blasting moves, and breaking certain objects apart lets you build new items from the ground up, usually helping to progress the story! The first characters you play as are Hulk and Iron Man! Hulk can transform back to Bruce Banner at will, and Iron Man can take to the skies and fly around the battlefield, blasting enemies from the air!

A little further into the level and we discover something I haven't seen done in a LEGO video game before. A third character joins the fight! Spider-man teams up with Hulk and Iron Man to add a third character (and more powers!) into the mix! Now when you're playing two player your friend doesn't have to be stuck being a sidekick! They're a full-fledged super hero just like you, and they can choose who they want to play as!

The game is more action packed than most LEGO games! Right out of the gates you're faced with a giant Sandman that you must defeat to complete the level!

When Lego Batman 2 rolled around, it brought huge changes to the Traveller's Tales Lego series. What was once a linear adventure through Lego-ized versions of your favorite franchises had now become an open world epic with a huge city to explore and a smartly funny script with jokes that are as enjoyable to an adult as they are to the game's "target audience". This July's Lego City Undercover built on this formula, giving players more to do in the world of the game, and now Lego Marvel attempts to hone this style of gameplay to a razor's edge. Gameplay-wise, it succeeds, but there are some serious technical issues that hold this game back a great deal.

The main setup of the game is that you play through a linear level as two or three Marvel Heroes, and between the levels you can travel freely around this game's recreation of New York and do side missions to kill time and work on getting 100% completion of the game. The various levels are very well designed, with fun puzzles to solve and make good usage of your character's powers. Furthermore, the story of the game is very well-written and all of the voice acting is top-notch. It really felt like playing through a Marvel Movie, and the script really captured that Marvel humor that makes the films so memorable. Another great thing about the game is the graphics. Lego Marvel Superheroes is consistently beautiful in the visuals department, with some parts even looking photorealistic (which sounds weird for a cartoony Lego game, but it works).

New York itself is brilliantly realized. In Lego Batman 2, the digital Gotham city didn't have much to do other than platforming and vehicle challenges, and non-player characters were limited to screaming citizens and random thugs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wii U - Co-Op Play - The Best November 30, 2013
Platform for Display:Nintendo Wii U| Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
For Wii U, this is another great Co-Op game (and even single player).

In these type games, it's great to have an opportunity to play with another. My son and I are huge fans of the lego series. While this game has suberb graphics and an excellent sound track, one of it's best qualities is the co-op. The ability to not have the split screen is the only way to play these games, and only the wii u offers that.

I actually think the split screen has been a negative versus the old two player mode. Thankfully, the Wii U has addressed this issue and actually improved upon the original two player mode.

If you want a great Co-Op game, look no further. Quick final note, all the heroes and much more are here. This could be the best lego game yet.

I have been a fan of Traveller's Tales Lego games since Lego Star Wars (Prequel Trilogy) on GameCube. I had been enjoying the gameplay of Lego: Marvel Superheroes on the Wii U until I hit a couple snags. It's frozen on me three - four times (in just a couple of weeks) where I've had to restart my Wii U system. This alone is not a major issue. The real problem is that I've run into two instances where I cannot complete a side-task / mission because items or characters are out of place.

The first is I am unable to get back into a bonus level - "The Thrill of the Chess". I had started the level once, but got to a point where I couldn't figure out what else to do. (Could be a third glitch?) I saved and exited the game. Now, I am unable to get back in to the level. The Iron Man "switches" are gone (silver and gold locks are blown off) but the Magneto character "switches" are will not move / open. The little "lights" surrounding the door are green, but the door is still down.

I have restarted a new game and worked my way through the the story to try to clear the first "glitch." I haven't gotten back there yet. In the second run, I have unlocked all the bonus levels again. I have started working on the character, vehicle, and gold brick missions in the city. For one such task, I need to use a character with telekinetic powers to control a security behind a locked to door to pull a switch that opens the door. However, this guard is not behind the locked door - he's stuck out on the street with me!!! (I was able to complete this task on my first run, so I know where he is supposed to be.)

I've restarted the game several times, I've removed the disk and reinserted, but the "Thrill of of the Chess" entry remains blocked.

3.0 out of 5 stars It would be a good game if it wasn't so bugged for the second player
It would be a good game, if it wasn't so bugged for the second player. Really hard to run the missions with two players when you have to constantly reset the console.
