The left over pieces are abundant and required if you want to build the "Ice Cream Machine" from the Lego Movie.
I personally enjoyed this set because you can easily place this in any Lego City without looking out of place.
However this will stay in a glass case with her other Lego collections.
The top is easily removable to place minifigures inside the truck.
I have included better photos of the detail in the ice cream truck and a bag of left over spare pieces which are required for the original "Ice Cream Machine"

As for the actual build, I got it for the van, which took me about 45 minutes to an hour of leisurely building to complete. The van, apparently, uses fewer pieces than the ice cream machine (I would guess I had somewhere between 50-70 pieces left once I finished the van, including some blocks), so that was a nice bonus. This set comes with three minifigs, and one of the three (Cardio Carrie) has a dual face. The other two are the ice cream workers. They don't have dual faces, but their outfits are pretty neat - reminds me of a throwback to the 50's soda shop uniform/costume. I didn't love the stickers, and would have much preferred they just printed directly on the blocks, but Lego seems to be using stickers more and more, so this complaint isn't specific to this set.
The van goes great in my kid's Lego City, and fits in nicely with her other Creator and Friends sets. The color scheme seems to suggest that it's being marketed primarily towards girls, but the shooting machine thing seems to be directed at boys. Finally, something that isn't completely gender-specific and predictable from Lego, so bonus points for that!Read more ›
Endless imagination .
They've finished the game's main story, but continue to run around making up their own adventures (which for some reason tend to focus around the icecream truck). At any rate, it was a thrill for her to be able to build a favorite virtual item in the real-world.
She also loved it because the set came with a minifig of Wyldstyle (her favorite character from the movie/game).
She could hardly wait to finish opening her other gifts before setting right to building this set. She has limited experience building Lego sets, but this went together for her without any hitches. As with virtually all Lego sets, the directions were clear and the pieces well-organized into numbered bags.
HIGHLY recommended for anyone into the Lego Movie and/or its associated video game, and especially as a way to encourage young girls' interest in making.
We still have legos from my own children so legos last. Highly recommend.
