Product Description

Benny may have spent too much time in space with a lack of oxygen, but this wacky character is also a Master Builder. Help him construct the Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! of his dreams then help the heroes to evade the Robo Police interceptor. Open the central roof to access the computers and tools in the control room. Push the middle exhaust to extend the wings, unleash the hidden spring-loaded cannons and fire the stud blasters. Raise the satellite dish to release the spacebots. And if all that's not enough to fend off the enemy, detach the wing flyers to triple the threat. Includes 4 minifigures with accessories: Benny, Robo Emmet, Space Wyldstyle and Robo Pilot, plus an Astro Kitty figure.

As with all the Lego Movie sets, my son loves them.

Couldn't be happier- my kids had it before it was available in Australia and a lot cheaper than what Lego is sold here for.

Its more solid than it looks and overall even more impressive when built than how it appears on the image.

[note: I didn't buy this set from Amazon, but from the Lego store directly]

When I watched the Lego movie, I loved this vehicle (and the character of Benny), because I grew up building and playing with the Lego spaceships of the late 80s and early 90s (Blacktron, Space Police, Ice Planet, Spyrius, etc., etc.). This set was pure nostalgia for me. Building it "felt" like those old big spaceship sets, and there are lots of pieces and aesthetic elements in this set that recall the classic Lego spaceships. Its design is much more modern however, so the end result is ultimately sleeker and more complex than the old sets. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it manages to be a great modern Lego set, without losing the classic "feel" of the heyday of Lego spaceships.

It's been probably 15 years since I last bought a Lego set for myself (I've been consistently buying them as gifts for young relatives though). That's how good this set is.

Like Benny himself, this set is a nod to Lego "Classic Space", the amazingly creative early Lego space sets of the late 70s and early 80s. I grew up with these Legos and their immediate follow ups (the also-fantastic Futuron, Blacktron, and Space Police sets) and I was utterly delighted to see this nostalgic nod make it into the Lego movie.

I was equally delighted by how much everyone seemed to enjoy Benny, and the moment I heard of this set, I knew I had to have it. Its full of fantastic touches, including classic space themed versions of movie characters WildStyle and UniKitty (AstroKitty!). And Benny even has a reversible head so you can have him displaying the classic plain Lego smiley face, just like the old days.

The ship itself is a mix of old and new. Along with some pieces I haven't seen in a long time, you get a few classic space logos. The instructions and build "style" are strictly modern, but the color palette and style is, like Benny, a somewhat crazy and over-the-top version of classic space, filled to the brim with engines, computers, rockets, etc. Its more solid than it looks and overall even more impressive when built than how it appears on the image. Its also sturdier than you'd think for its size.

My one caveat is that, unlike the classic sets that were mostly about peaceful exploration, Benny's Spaceship is armed to the teeth. That's a small gripe though and understandable as they were in for quite a fight when it was built in the movie.

In the early 80's, Lego began their first space series. One of the center pieces of that collection was the Galaxy Commander, a spaceship with a cockpit and a cargo area in the back. Benny's Spaceship is a homage to that kit, modernizing it and taking to a much more detailed level. Not only does Benny's Spaceship carry forward the color scheme of the 80's model it emulates, it sports the same iconic planet logo with a ship sailing around it, and features a ship number just one digit removed from the original ship that inspired it.

However this new vehicle has way more features then the old one. It has a cockpit as well, but this one can hold 3 figures. It has a hidden command center, movable wings with hidden missile launchers, detachable mini-vehicles which attach to the large wings, two cute little robots stored near the back, and more. It's well built and can hold up to play without falling apart. My 7-year-old son loves to play with it, while I love to put it on display. Trust me, it looks much better in person than it does in the picture, and the picture looks pretty good in its own right.

I purchased this from the Lego store for $99, which is a bargain given the quality of the kit, the number of pieces, and the tie in to the excellent Lego Movie. Highly recommended.

The Lego Movie was a wonderful mix of whimsy and heart, telling an age-old story of an everyman coming into his own. Along the way, he encounters a variety of colorful characters, but perhaps none is more lovable than Benny, an early-'80s Lego spaceman who just wants to play with classic space bricks. With his cracked helmet and his scratched up chest, it's clear that this is a relic of an earlier time, a time when faces were simpler and spaceships came in blue and grey with yellow accents. He tries several times to build the gang a spaceship, only to get shot down time and again. Finally, during the climax, the time comes and he gets to build his spaceship. Or, should I say, his spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!!!

With this much charm in the movie, the s.S.S. has big brick shoes to fill. At 940 pieces for a $100 retail price, it's a pretty good price per piece without being ridiculously expensive like some of the boutique pieces. Compare to the Super Star Destroyer. Yes, it had 3152 pieces, but it retailed for $400, putting the price per piece higher than Benny's ship, and this isn't ridiculously priced for a birthday or Christmas present. It's also a very retro mix of pieces, though with modern construction techniques. The blue and yellow body hearken back to the early days of Lego Space, before Futuron, Space Police, Mars Exploration, Ice Planet, Blactron, and of course Star Wars. The yellow accents are a nice touch. I never thought we'd get the X-Wing canopy piece in old space yellow. An even better touch is the number of the ship: LL 929. This is one more than the old Galaxy Explorer set, with LL 928 emblazoned on the side. (There was also LL 918 and LL 924, so we're continuing a grand tradition.)

The construction is satisfying and fun.
