I got this set even though I was a little skeptical about the price to piece ratio (~400 pcs. for $60 is not very good) but I was blown away by the set. The build is great, features nice landscaping and a cool technique to create the curved wall. The minifigures are awesome and it features two of the new lego horses! I heartily recommend this set for Lego fans and LotR fans alike!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Intricate Details & Full of Character(s)! June 20, 2012

Ok, this set is just awesome. First the characters: Frodo, Aragorn, Merry, and the Ringwraiths. A fantastic cast of characters that adds considerably to the entire Lord of the Rings LEGO series. Plus, the Ringwraiths ride on the new LEGO horses, which are beautifully designed specifically for the wraiths. These new horses have the ability to stand in a rearing position, which is a very welcome improvement. Frodo comes with the One Ring, and the sword Sting. The set itself is fantastic, a unique spiraled staircase, secret chamber inside, weapons racks, trap door, bolt-firing mechanism, campfire, and intricate details throughout, including little statues. I can't say anything bad about it!

9472 Attack on Weathertop is a 430 piece LEGO set initially released in May of 2012 with a LEGO store price of $59.99. It is part of the first series of Lord of the Rings-licensed LEGO toys. It contains 5 minifigures (Aragorn, Frodo, Merry, and two ringwraiths), two black horses, pieces to build the fortress, and accessories (THE ONE RING, weapons, flames, etc..).

I *REALLY* wanted to like this set. I mean, the ringwraiths (also known as Nazgul and Dark Riders) are some of the signature villains in LotR; Aragorn is action incarnate; *THE ONE RING* is in this set (as well as in 9470 Shelob Attacks); and Weathertop seemed pretty cool with its circular form and opening design. But, to me, the reality of the set just didn't live up to expectations. The ringwraiths are BORING - basically, generic black hoods we've seen in other sets combined with what amounts to black Ninjago outfits and black headpieces. The fortress itself is small, and even when split open on its hinges just doesn't have much room. Yes, there is a trapdoor and some nice weapons (and THE ONE RING), but the minute I was done building this set I was thinking, "I'd rather use these pieces to make something else (like turn Helm's Deep into a super fortress)." It certainly isn't a terrible set, but.. it should have been better considering the base story and material they had to work with.

As I hinted at above, the bricks in this set can be used to make other sets more interesting. 9474 The Battle of Helm's Deep and 9471 Uruk-hai Army are two good examples of sets this one can be combined with for a "super fortress" build, but keep in mind you'll have to disassemble Weathertop from the instruction-based build to do it (but isn't that the best part of LEGOs?).

Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hardly worth $60 June 15, 2012

Like the other reviews have said, this set is small. While it contains two of the new style horses, a spiral staircase and a few decorations, this set is otherwise unremarkable.

PACKAGING:
This set contains one instruction manual (full sized) that is about 74 pages long. It is loose in the box (not attached to cardboard), so you will want paperweights. This set contains four bags of LEGO bricks, you only need to open one at a time to construct this set.
The minifigures are spread throughout the bags, but there is only five of them and they're easily distinguishable from one another, the time saving is minimal.
Bag 1 constructs the horses, Ringwraiths, and the extra rock and bush.
Bag 2 constructs half of the lower half of Weathertop (the entrance), bag 3 constructs the other lower half (spiral staircase).
Bag 4 constructs the top, and has most of the extras and decorations.

BONUS:
Included with this set is an orange plastic brick separator!

MINIFIGURES:
This set includes 5 minifugres, including Frodo, Merry, Aragorn, and two Ringwraiths.
Both of the Ringwraiths have new styled swords, new styled capes, and rings. The capes have three holes so that the hood fits on properly and also over the horse.
Frodo has a ring, a dagger, and a green cape.
Merry has a dagger and a light green cape.
Aragorn has a new style sword and a torch.

Also included is a rat and two horses.
Note about the horse: A special feature of this horse is that it's back half (legs and tail) is able to pivot, along with its head. This allows the horse to rear up on its hind legs. One thing not apparent (and a nice feature) is that the horse WILL balance on a level surface, even with a minifigure riding it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little too Expensive May 30, 2012
Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I love the look of Weathertop But The price 60 bucks is a bit much. I mean the Uruk Hai Army Set is half the Price and doesn't have anything interesting going for it. I wish the good folks at Lego would cut the price in half because sets like Mines of Moria and Helms deep deserve the expensive Price.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully organic Lego set with some nice minifigures December 18, 2012
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
The other night I just had a craving to build a Lego set so I ran to the store and grabbed Attack on Weathertop, a Lego set I have had my eyes on for quite sometime. My Lego display is split into two categories: I have a regular Lego town and I have a spooky, haunted Lego world. I thought Weathertop would be an excellent addition to my spooky Lego world and as it turns out, it is! It is a wonderfully organic piece that nicely conveys the ancient ruins being overrun buy growth and ravaged by time. The set nicely replicates a very exciting and important scene from the Fellowship of the Ring. After putting the set together, I was impressed with the design and the minifigures but found I was less excited by the set as a whole than I thought I would be. Here's my thoughts on Attack on Weathertop:

The Facts:
# of pieces: 430 and 1 instruction manual
Minifigures: Frodo, Aragorn, Merry, two Ringwraiths, two horses.
Lego's MSRP: $59.99

The Positives:

*I think everyone of Lego's LOTR minifigures has been a hit. They are immediately recognizable, extremely detailed, and come with nice accessories (everyone has a sword and there are rings, torches, and cooking supplies). This set comes with 5 minifigures and 2 horses which is a nice assortment. The new horses are fantastic and really fun for any Lego characters needing a black horse with red eyes.

*Weathertop has a very interesting design. It uses hinged pieces effectively to make a rounded structure. Weather top looks nice as a standalone structure from all sides but also opens up to reveal the interior of the ruins. Little tufts of weeds and green bricks give this structure a nice, overgrown appearance.

*Weathertop does have quite a few cool little details.
