I bought two of these because I love the sleek modern space age look of the Imperial Shuttle; even as an adult. One will be given to my 8-year old son this Christmas; the other one is an investment piece for a couple of years down the road. This is going to become a highly collectible piece; Lego is discontinuing production as of December 2012. Regarding shipping... Previous reviewer noted that the product arrived damaged because the shipping carton was beaten up. I agree that these expensive sets should be packaged with more care by Amazon (cardboard boxes should be sealed with tape along "all edges" of the cardboard box; not just the horizontal fold). I have a simple solution to minimize any potential shipping damage: upgrade your account to Amazon Prime and select Next Day Air for $3.99 which ensures save arrival (ground shipments take several days during which the boxes are naturally beaten up along the way). $3.99 upgrade for overnight is a very small price to pay considering the high price tag of this item. By the way, I have purchased numerous times from the online lego store and I find that their packaging system is pretty equal to Amazon. Just upgrade to Next Day Air and you will have less to worry about.

The product came in a large box with paper stuffed, the actual lego box was not damaged at all. The set itself is great, it was a very time consuming build and the finished model is very sturdy although there are one or two pieces near the center fin that falls off easily if you touch it. The model was larger than expected too, it definitely weighs around 10 pounds. You can either display it on a stand or on a detatchable landing gear, the wings also rotate by two individual handles in the back. Overall, this is an excellent set and you certainly don't have to be 16 and up to build this. I would highly recommend it, it is a worth display piece in your home.

Whether you're building this for yourself or your child or building it together, this set is not for beginners. I built this myself, having played with legos since I was only 5 and now being in my 30's, and this took me three evenings to build. It is by far the biggest lego set I have, standing just over two feet tall with the wings open. The only thing I thought they could've done better was a ramp for the entry to the ship. Other than that, I love it.

I've only built one other Lego set before, and that was the 500 or so piece x-wing. This fantastic kit is absolutely no toy. You'll get no play value out of it; that's not what it's for. It's a display piece and it's a very good looking display piece; quite commanding in its appearance. I had a LOT of reservations about perching the finished shuttle on top of the stilt-like display stand ("this looks rickety, it's too top-heavy, it'll easily fall over, etc, etc"), but its actually pretty sturdy. I'll probably take it back down off the stand and remount it on its landing gear just so it's not as big of a target for passing room traffic, but for a just-finished build with all the visual novelty it's providing right now, I'll leave it like it is.

The amount of structural and mechanical engineering that's been put into something like this is no less than astounding. 2500 bricks, bits and pieces, and they all press-fit into an operating model of this size and complexity without even a single drop of glue? Wow!

One reviewer remarked there are a couple of parts on the back below the vertical stabilizer (shark fin? whatever...) that want to fall off. That's true. They're two flat wedge-shaped pieces opposite one another, each one held on by a single (what I want to call) "lego stub". I found I had a few extra small bits left over after the build, and one of those was a black part# 4121715, a double-ended stub used typically to fasten two girders together side-to-side. I used that as a sort of stabilizing component to the two wedge-parts on the back, sticking each end into an available receiving hole in each part. They're still pretty shaky, but a little less so now.

Another reviewer noted his #3 instruction book was mis-printed.

What major project does not come with a few headaches though. The 16+ is there for the sheer manual labor involved in putting this thing together. The ends of my fingers are still sore from pushing together tiny pieces on top of other tiny pieces. Great experience though. About 18 hours worth of construction, 2 of those were probably spent looking for bits missing.......see below.

I gave it 5 stars for the pure ingenuity that went into the design. The wing construction alone put a smile on my face. (and my nine yr old son who got this from Christmas) Hats off to the LEGO engineers.

Problem 1....Not really a problem but I have been spoiled recently. Recent kits come with the bags labels 1,2 3, 4, etc that map to the guides you are reading from. Not in this one...you're on your own. Daunting at first but get all the Tupperware and glassware you have in the house and keep 1 bag per bowl. You'll get used to the mentality behind the bag separation.

Problem 2.....I am not mad, I swear....they were not there....I know these pieces were not in the kit. 2 missing pieces that joined the head to the body. Kinda important. I scavenged from a Lego castle.

Problem 3....This is kind of a big one and it may have only been my shipment. The instructions in book 3 ended abruptly halfway through construction of the jets at the rear of the shuttle. It then repeated the entire section of the head construction only to go on to step 29 of the left wing(may have been right, not sure) eeeeek, I scratched my head....... I skipped to book 4 that went on to building the opposing wing with no problems..
