The mechanical functions work well, but like all Lego sets, they can come apart very easily causing frustrating play for younger kids.

For the Star Wars fan: This guys is pretty true to the AT-AT in episode five.

Lego hits a home run with this mechanized model of the AT-AT you first saw terrorizing the Rebels on Hoth in Episode V of Star Wars. This advanced model (more than 1100 pieces) features a handle on top for easy transport, but the kicker is both its size (over 12" tall and 14" long) and the mechanization. With the addition of 6-AA batteries, this model uses its articulated legs to walk smoothly and "effortlessly", with the head swiveling... just like in the movie!

The disappointment? Not too hard to build. I do have an expectation that these collector sets are more complicated and take more effort to construct.

But it's so cool when it walks!

I just finished assembling Lego's motorized AT AT. Not only does it look fantastic, but it actually is fully mobile. After tweeking the gears and the legs a bit, I managed to get the AT AT to walk smoothly on my tile floors. It's not a toy for young children because of its fragility and small parts which can easily be swallowed, but for adult "kids", it is definitely a wonderful collectible that will provide many hours of fun.

I got this set for Christmas and it is the coolest set I own! I'm 12, and it wasn't too hard for me to build (it was actually quite fun to build). Here are the pros and cons...

Pros:
-IT WALKS!!!
-Fun to build, lots of pieces
-AT-AT driver
-Handle on top makes it easy to tranport
-Motor

Cons:
-Battery box takes SIX BATTERIES

It's really cool (almost creepy) to see this the finished model walking across our carpet!

I've always been a pretty big LEGO fan. I don't care so much about the minifigs or old fashioned brick on brick kind of building, but I love anything technic. The motorized walking AT-AT is a perfect combination of technics and the traditional panel kind of LEGO pieces. The finished product is an awesome walking machine with moving head . . . who doesn't like that?

Build experience: It took me a bit over 4 hours to finish the whole thing casually. It really uses every trick up LEGO's sleeve, from brick on brick building to decently advanced technic tricks. You do have to build 4 legs, which are pretty much the same, but that wasn't too bad.

Walking mechanism: As someone else mentioned, the walking mechanism is actually kind of simple, but it walks in a very realistic fashion and that's what matters. Also, it can walk on most flat surfaces, from flat and slippery to carpet (All Terrain indeed).

Hint to people with tripping AT AT: I saw a few complaints a various sites about the AT AT tipping over or not walking properly. Mine worked perfectly the first time around, but I went back and looked at the instruction booklet after I finished, and there are a few critical steps in the mechanism that needs to be followed exactly. In particular, the bottom of page 34 in instruction booklet 1 must be followed exactly. This is where the tabs for each of the legs is placed, and if they are placed out of sync the finished product probably won't work.

Education value: Well . . . it is pretty educational in the sense that it uses a lot of different building techniques. If your child (or you) is an aspiring physicist or engineer, you might appreciate the 24 to 1 gear reduction used to make this massive thing run with just a tiny motor.

I thought that this toy would be delicate, like most models, however this particular model is stronger than most so if your child wants to play with it, they can go right on ahead, and not be afraid of breaking it. (Unless it is dropped or hit). The AT-AT is detailed in the sense that it resembles the real thing. It is a bonus that this lego model actually moves, which is pretty cool. That means that your child can stage star wars scenes. It wasn't that difficult to build, I think the minimum age should be about 10.

Great! I couldn't be happier with this item. My son took 3 days (he's 9) to put it together and loves it. Hard to rate educational value because it's not really a learning toy, though you do have to take your time and read the instructions in order to put it together properly so I guess that helps with learning. It is a Lego set so it can't be handled like most toys but for a Lego set it is really sturdy. You can actually play with this, not just look at it for fear of pieces falling off.

You are going to love it!

This lego is a great price. It really walks forward and backward. It also comjes with neat mini figures- Luke Skywalker, General Veers, ATAT pilot, and a snowtrooper with a rifle. It also comes with a grappling line to hang Luke. I give this durability a 4, since it did not walk until I fixed up a few gears. It is one of those toys that if you mess up one little piece it messes up the whole. The age one this really matters, I am thirteen and I needed a little help from my dad. Anyways this is a great buy with many customized features.
