Product Description

Editorial Review

Fans of Star Wars: Episode I will recall with excitement the power and near-invincibility of the Destroyer Droid. With more than 500 pieces and fittings, this advanced LEGO kit has everything necessary to build that fearsome automaton. And with guns mounted almost everywhere, the firepower on these cyberfighters is enough to send even the courageous Jedi out looking for another job. Multiple connections, tubes, and fittings really help bring this model to life. Instructions for two different droids are included, but as with all LEGO kits, builders can use their creativity to adapt and change the figures they build. This kit has many small pieces and requires advanced building skills, so older children and experienced LEGO-builders will have the most success with it. May the parts be with you! --Lee Strucker

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots and lots of fun., March 20, 2000

When I bought the set I was not aware of the "pop-up" functionality that it had I just wanted the set because I thought it looked really cool as it was and the possibility to use the pieces in other constructions. But after I have built the droid I feel like I don't want to disassemble it, I'm even thinking about buying another set!

Now that I have been playing around with it a few days I must say that it by far the most advanced and intricate Lego model I ever seen, it's not the amount of pieces that are fascinating, it's the construction, it makes you wonder how many sleepless nights it took for constructor of this model to finalize it.

Even though the model is complicated it's fairly easy to follow the building instructions and build the model but I can imagine some younger children might need some assistance. Since it is a construction that depends on a chain reaction that is triggered by a "push-button" it has to function correctly all the way through the course of events that it causes which means that all the parts have to work together. I had to rebuild the model once to get the right functionality and it might take some time to calibrate the construction. But I promise you it's worth it!

As many times before I'm surprised by the amount of pieces that comes in the box, when looking on the box the set doesn't seem to contain as many pieces as it actually does, for me it's a positive surprise and an other positive fact was that it contained less "special" pieces than I thought, the only pieces that was really "special" was the "toes" at the end of the legs.

I sincerely believe that this set ought to amaze anyone that is slightly interested in technical constructions and even some of those who are less interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars This destroyer droid rocks and rolls!, March 13, 2000

I've mostly collected the episode one lego vehicles, haven't had a technic set since I was a kid. This kit is absoloutely amazing. The engineering behind it is unreal. Don't think the pictures on the box are an exaggeration, this thing really rolls right up into its ball form, and you can toss it right along any smooth surface-when it slows enough, the front feet pop out stopping it, the back leg pops out, the head and arms pop out and guns deploy-the coolest thing I have ever seen a lego kit do! It's hours of fun. I found that some of the rubber bands they suggested for certain actions were either too loose or tight, but there are so many extras provided (you use about 10- it comes with 60, all different sizes/tensions) that its no problem fine tuning the thing. I can't say enough good things about this toy- no large peices anywhere! Too much fun. Definately worth the cash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fold-up, Roll-up, Jump-up, Shoot-up!, August 24, 2000

This is the second Star Wars Droid that I have purchased, the first being the "Battle Droid". (The two sets look Brill together!) I decided that I needed a new challenge, and 'challenge' it did!

This is possibly the most technically complicated Lego model I've ever built, and that's a few! (I've been building since I could walk!) In total I must have spent Three hours constructing it (and re-constructing it!) and probably two hours refining the fold-up-roll-stand-up routine. I had to make a few adjustments to the rubber bands to enable the mechanism to work smoothly (more bands isn't always better!) But the end result was well worth the effort.

Since I have bought the model I have rebuilt it twice, why? It got easier the second time and for some reason it worked better. I think it was because I knew what I was doing the second time around! Also I found it possible to delay the trigger so now it rolls further before jumping up, which was what I thought (hoped!)the original model would do.

My personal opinion on younger 'Lego engineers' taking on this challenge, is that you can have a go if you like, but be nice to your Dad for a couple of days before 'cos you may need to ask a few favors from him (Or 'NASA' if He can't help! ) However, do not be put off by what I'm saying here, it is from personal experience only.

As for looks, this model can kill at 50 paces! All my friends are extremely jealous because of my "Destroyer Droid!" They all want one! The mechanism that makes the Droid roll and then suddenly jump up in a flash makes the model so life like! As soon as its up Wham! Out come the guns, ready to blast anything that moves!

I would definitely recommend this Model to anybody who enjoys Lego, Star Wars or both. (Or just to make your friends green with envy!) If you get as much joy out of this Droid as I did, then it is well worth getting one (I've now got two!) One Droid is now sat in my office on top of my computer guarding anyone entering my room, the other is waiting to suprise you!
