When I bought the set I was not aware of the "pop-up" functionality that it had I just wanted the set because I thought it looked really cool as it was and the possibility to use the pieces in other constructions. But after I have built the droid I feel like I don't want to disassemble it, I'm even thinking about buying another set!

Now that I have been playing around with it a few days I must say that it by far the most advanced and intricate Lego model I ever seen, it's not the amount of pieces that are fascinating, it's the construction, it makes you wonder how many sleepless nights it took for constructor of this model to finalize it.

Even though the model is complicated it's fairly easy to follow the building instructions and build the model but I can imagine some younger children might need some assistance. Since it is a construction that depends on a chain reaction that is triggered by a "push-button" it has to function correctly all the way through the course of events that it causes which means that all the parts have to work together. I had to rebuild the model once to get the right functionality and it might take some time to calibrate the construction. But I promise you it's worth it!

As many times before I'm surprised by the amount of pieces that comes in the box, when looking on the box the set doesn't seem to contain as many pieces as it actually does, for me it's a positive surprise and an other positive fact was that it contained less "special" pieces than I thought, the only pieces that was really "special" was the "toes" at the end of the legs.

I sincerely believe that this set ought to amaze anyone that is slightly interested in technical constructions and even some of those who are less interested.

I've mostly collected the episode one lego vehicles, haven't had a technic set since I was a kid. This kit is absoloutely amazing. The engineering behind it is unreal. Don't think the pictures on the box are an exaggeration, this thing really rolls right up into its ball form, and you can toss it right along any smooth surface-when it slows enough, the front feet pop out stopping it, the back leg pops out, the head and arms pop out and guns deploy-the coolest thing I have ever seen a lego kit do! It's hours of fun. I found that some of the rubber bands they suggested for certain actions were either too loose or tight, but there are so many extras provided (you use about 10- it comes with 60, all different sizes/tensions) that its no problem fine tuning the thing. I can't say enough good things about this toy- no large peices anywhere! Too much fun. Definately worth the cash.

This is the second Star Wars Droid that I have purchased, the first being the "Battle Droid". (The two sets look Brill together!) I decided that I needed a new challenge, and 'challenge' it did!

This is possibly the most technically complicated Lego model I've ever built, and that's a few! (I've been building since I could walk!) In total I must have spent Three hours constructing it (and re-constructing it!) and probably two hours refining the fold-up-roll-stand-up routine. I had to make a few adjustments to the rubber bands to enable the mechanism to work smoothly (more bands isn't always better!) But the end result was well worth the effort.

Since I have bought the model I have rebuilt it twice, why? It got easier the second time and for some reason it worked better. I think it was because I knew what I was doing the second time around! Also I found it possible to delay the trigger so now it rolls further before jumping up, which was what I thought (hoped!)the original model would do.

My personal opinion on younger 'Lego engineers' taking on this challenge, is that you can have a go if you like, but be nice to your Dad for a couple of days before 'cos you may need to ask a few favors from him (Or 'NASA' if He can't help! ) However, do not be put off by what I'm saying here, it is from personal experience only.

As for looks, this model can kill at 50 paces! All my friends are extremely jealous because of my "Destroyer Droid!" They all want one! The mechanism that makes the Droid roll and then suddenly jump up in a flash makes the model so life like! As soon as its up Wham! Out come the guns, ready to blast anything that moves!

I would definitely recommend this Model to anybody who enjoys Lego, Star Wars or both. (Or just to make your friends green with envy!) If you get as much joy out of this Droid as I did, then it is well worth getting one (I've now got two!) One Droid is now sat in my office on top of my computer guarding anyone entering my room, the other is waiting to suprise you!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Episode I Item. Period., August 19, 2000

With the glut of Episode I merchandise that hit stores last year, a lot of things were overlooked, especially if it didn't pertain to action figures. The Technic Destroyer Droid is undoubtedly the best of the Episode I merchandising blitz, and it is the most fun I've had with a toy in a long time.

It took me about four hours (not counting additional time retooling it) to put together and it was a lot of fun. Kids and adults both will have a field day with this one. The droid can roll up into its "wheel" form (a feature not present on any other Droideka toys out there) and can even stop itself and unfold, just as in the film. Be careful not to roll it terribly hard though, as some of the smaller, less-secure pieces can come loose due to pressure. There are also a set of instructions included to build an alternate model, the Trade Federation AAT Tank, but I can't comment on that since I haven't built it myself.

Basically, if you're looking for something fun in the Star Wars realm, or if you're a Lego fan looking for something fun to build, then this is the item for you. Lego has been making some of the most inventive and fun products, Star Wars or otherwise, for years, and this is the most recent "crown jewel."

4.0 out of 5 stars Really cool looking, but..., April 29, 2000

The reason I bought this was essentially because I need to clutter up my shelves at work with really cool-looking toys, and this is the coolest looking Lego set I have ever seen. The fact that it has pop-up action blew me away! However, when I actually got it, it no longer seems like the coolest thing on earth.

From the pictures and everything, I thought perhaps that you'd be able to roll it down the hall and when it stopped, it'd unfold itself. Instead, it just sort of does a half roll and pops out right there. Also, it seems that a small flaw in the design is causing the head to pop off every time it unfolds, and that tends to ruin the effect.

Overall, though, this toy is going to serve its purpose. It *is* still the coolest looking Lego set I've ever seen, I'll still probably buy the other Droid kits, and it's going to look great on my shelves. I'm just disappointed that I won't be able to roll it into my coworkers' offices and be all cool like that.

This thing is great. It takes a while to assemble (although that could be because this is only the second Technic kit I've bought) but is well worth it. And in regards to the head popping off, somebody I know figured out a way to fix it. Before you put the "face" section on slip a couple of the smallest rubber bands around the connecting area. After inserting it in the proper place, just loop the bands up over the odd shaped pieces on either side of the head. Voila! The secondary set, AAT, is pretty neat as well.

This lego technics set is beautifully engineered. It's fun to build, and to display, but the real beauty is in the rubber-band and impact-driven transformation.

The transform features a complex chain reaction. The rolling motion onto the protruding switch releases the forelegs. The extended forelegs absorb the same rolling impact, and this releases the hind leg, which in turn uncurls the body and releases the upper arms and head. The outflung upper arms then allow the lower arms to spring out.

This is only fun WHEN IT WORKS. There is a problem with the foreleg rubber bands needing to be in EXACTLY right configuration (each should dip UNDER the knob between the two connectors).

Also, making an "X" pattern out of the head's rubber bands seems to help.

It will take you about 3 hours to build, then it's constant amazement! Even 1 hour after finishing I still can't believe it actually worked. Whoever designed this is a genius.

I am not going to go over what others said already. I do want to stress following instructions exactly, and often reference illustrations. Although the chain-reaction mechanism is fun, it does seem kind of fragile (especially since there is no glue). I did try to bend hard and drop from higher ground, and things seem to work ok with no damanges. Good thing is there are lots of extra rubberbands so if you break some you have spares.

Do have the expectation that it won't work all the time, at least not in my case.I assume adjusting the rubberband tension will help, I would have to play around with it.

There are some inconsistencies in the manual, nothing show stopper though. p31 the leg rubberband is attached to a different joing; p38 step 10 and 11 are reversed; p47 showed a non-existant rubberband which should have been on the other end. The rubberband location may be a preference issue because they work either way.

I'm 25. I have been collecting and building with Lego for 23 of those years and have my own unofficial website dedicated to the toy ....

Lego makes great things. I have never been dissapointed with their engineering of even a single model until now.

To start with the model is held together with rubberbands. That's how it functions, You roll it and the parts snap out using rubber band spring action.

Given the complexity of the model this kind of engineering seemes unusually sloppy for Lego. Needless to say it is very flimsy. I doubt it would ever have much of a chance working the way it was intended. Besides that, Reseting it to its rolling attack position is a royal pain, half the time when springing into action its head and other parts come flying off, making it even more of a pain to repair. But like those American sports cars from the early 80's, who needs reliablitly when its looks alone could kill. Seriously, this beast just sitting on a shelf is a way cool conversation piece to amaze your freinds. Just don't let them touch it!

Okay forget the model, lets talk about the scrap heap. This model is a Technic parts dream come true! There are hundres of very useful parts with this model, like more axels, belts, angle pieces, than one would ever know what to do with. What it does not come with is a single traditional Lego Brick- okay 3 or 4 round 1x1s and a couple finishing plates are the only parts you would normally connect to a normal brick. With this model I felt more like I was dealing with a plastic Erector set than anything Lego would invent.

So if your a gear head looking for Technic parts alone, buy this set! if you want a model to sit on a shelf and look pretty buy this set. If you want something that actually works- buy a Toyota.

It's great to have a large scale Destroyer Droid with intricate design work put into it. This is definitely not for the real young kids as it has very small pieces and rubber bands. A model lover will of course love putting this one together. This Technic version faithfully brings out the best of the Destroyer Droid, one of the coolest robots to be seen on the screen in a long time. It is also a couple of hours worth of time in putting it together....but worth it when it is done. This is more a "trophy" piece then a toy because it can easily fall apart if mishandled. A great addition to any Star Wars collection.
