Great Gaming Fun for All Ages,
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (PC Games) (CD-ROM)
I loved the original Lego Star Wars game. It was incredibly fun, very replayable and had a wicked sense of humor. Lego Star Wars II is just as fun, and covers Episodes IV-VI!
It's very rare to find a game that kids can play, adults can play, and everybody truly loves it. This is one of those games. I'm sure kids enjoy the game quite a lot - but pretty much every adult gamer I know loves this series as well. It's fun, it has classic scenes from the Star Wars movies done in a VERY funny style, and you can keep replaying it. You can play it with friends! You can unlock new episodes, new ships, new characters, you name it. The first thing you notice when you enter the "Cantina" is that now you can MAKE NEW CHARACTERS!!! Yes, you can mix up Darth Vader's head, Princess Leia's torso and a stormtrooper's pants. You can mix pretty much any character you find in the game, and give them personalized names! Then you can bring 2 of your creations into the game with you on free play mode. Talk about fun!! The game gets even better. Yes, you work through all the classic scenes - Luke buying the droids, the Death Star blowing up, and so on from the "first 3 movies" (in release order at least). The cut scenes are VERY funny. Being able to play along as the various characters is amazingly fun in story mode, and even better in "free play" when you can randomly switch between a variety of characters to find all the hidden items. I love the stud finding system. You want more money? Just replay a mission a few times. You can get all sorts of fun "cheats" (not cheats, really, but fun add-ons), you can buy new characters to use, and much more. It really gives you incentive to keep playing. Is a youngster in the house having trouble playing? Just have an adult pop into the game for a while to help out, then the adult can pop out again, to let the child keep playing! It is just brilliant. I love this game. The graphics are superb, as last time, with little lego movements seeming just right. Their swaggers and sliders are incredibly funny. The sound, of course, is the real movie soundtrack and is superb. You couldn't ask for anything better. Even the tiny touches are funny. If C-3PO starts getting hit, he loses an arm, then another arm, then a leg. You have him hopping along valiantly behind you, trying to remain with your team. Chewie rips off arms from stormtroopers. Now of course, there are always a few things the game designers get wrong. While Chewie's arm-ripping is quite funny, it is REALLY annoying when he does it - very slowly - in the middle of a firefight when you wanted him to be blasting away. The characters automatically switch into close combat mode if they think someone is nearby, even if you really needed to fire away at someone with the blaster. Even more annoying, if you're blasting away at "destructables" (wall items, whatever) and your friend gets near you start bashing on him! The camera is also really annoying. You get a *slight* amount of view control, but not much. When you are craning around trying to find a mini-kit on the screen and the camera keeps swooping wildly exactly where you do NOT want to look, it can get very frustrating. Still, these are minor problems in a game that is so stellar. I highly, highly recommend this game for any gamer of any age. It's incredibly fun.

My husband and my son are addicted to this game! They liked the first one but the graphics and the difficulty level on this are much better! The characters are wonderful and the level of violence (especially for a technologically advanced 6 year old) is right where it should be. I would much rather see him crumble into lego parts than die a bloody on screen death. My husband ( an avid video game-a-holic) loves this game as well. The lack of "real" violence has not turned him off at all. I only wish that all games could be this realistic yet this tame when it comes to violent images. We HIGHLY recommend this!.... For ALL ages! After all, who doesn't love LEGO's?

This game is great fun for kids as well as adults. The gameplay consists of shoot-em-up for points, puzzles to solve, and some coordination stunts like driving a hovercraft across a straight line of lights. There are a large number of chapters including all the major scenes from Star Wars 4, 5 & 6. The transition videos it plays between each episode are really funny - for example when Leia records the message to put in R2D2 she can't figure out how to put it inside him, so she opens up his top like a garbage can and throws it in !
After chapters are complete, you can go back as other star wars characters in free play mode and open up hidden rooms. There are special legos to collect over time which open up additional secrets. Also you can customize characters and put different heads on different bodies - very funny. The game play in many ways is best with 2 players, some of the scenes you really want someone shooting while you solve the puzzle, or it gets a bit frustrating to keep getting shot. But you can die as many times as necessary without losing ground in the story - only money/points. And there is no blood, just lego pieces flying about :) I picked up 2 Xbox 360 controllers and plugged them into my PC (yes you can do this) and they worked really well - much easier to control than the keyboard, especially with 2 player mode. The only negatives I would mention are that you cannot save progress in the middle of a chapter. If you only have a limited amount of time, you will have to start the chapter over if you stop playing - some of the chapters can take 30-45 minutes to complete especially the first time through. Secondly, the game has fairly high end video card requirements (pixel shading & vertex shading). The discount GeForce card I got just 1 year ago was insufficient, and I had to buy a new card before I can play this game on my XP machine. It does work just fine with Windows Vista.

This is a very good game, my son and I both enjoy the game play. the story line follows the movies with a nice comic twist. The ability for both my son and myself to be able to play at the same time is wonderful.

This is a good game that's fun for littler kids and actually worked on my computer without special software work-arounds, unlike the prior title.

My son was so excited to get this item for christmas! It is a wonderful game in many respects it's fun(follows the story, tons to do) and pretty non-violent (legos break apart when shot). Big problem and huge frustration factor: you can only save this program when you complete a chapter, change a character(not very clear how to do this) or buy something from cantina (but you have to be able to get back) and this can take hours. Even my son has gotten frustrated after a day. He lost hours of work on christmas because we got stuck and couldn't figure out how to go buy something at the Cantina again. It's just not fair to kids. My kids share a computer, they have an alloted amount of time to play each day (especially during the school week). Not being able to save and come back is VERY FRUSTRATING! It looks like a great game but this one flaw has us looking for a new game for our son. He'll never be able to really enjoy it. What I don't understand is why any developer would design a game anymore where you can't save and come back later (this is a pretty basic function). I even wrote tech support and their response indicated they don't care. If you monitor your kids computer time.. forget this game it won't be much fun for them in the long run. Adults or kids with tons of time, you'll have a blast! Just a note this is alot like Lego Racers 2 in design (which my son loved) and he could save anywhere and come back.

Everything that's great in the first game is back with even more additions. You can even load in your saved characters from the first game into this one.
In this version, even non-Jedi can build out of the scrap legos along the way. There is also a bizzarre feature that allows you to create your own character. IE: matching Princess Leia's bikini with Vader's helmet, and Han Solo's pants. This is just another example how its more about the imagination and fun rather than accuracy of the storyline, which is also parodies brilliantly. The game does take a bit more requirements for the PC to run smoothly than the previous, but it still looks and sounds great on my P4 1.7ghz. No problems with installation for me. It does pack a punch and is loaded with action and problem solving that has enough for all levels of skill. There really is no way to "lose all your lives", so you just keep playing trying to rack up as much coins before you do lose life (which you immediately get back, just with a loss of coins) and you just keep playing until you reach the end of a level trying to find as many hidden items and secrets (which there is tons) along the way. Lots of replay value for all ages. Of course this is the original trilogy, so it already is packed with the great nostalgia of Han Sola, Jabba's palace, and AT-AT's...combined with Lego's this is an absolute winner.

This is my 9-year-old's first real video game, and he absolutely loves it. The only downside is that there is no way to save your current position; you can only save the latest level.

My son played the PC demos of this game with no problem, so I purchased this game new and gave it to him for his birthday. He was excited, but that turned to disappointment when the game didn't install because of a corrupt data file. It said:
LEGOS STAR WARS II ERROR Error 1330.A A file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file E:\ Default~1.cab has an invalid digital signature. This may indicate that the cabinet file is corrupt. Error 3 was returned by WinVerifyTrust. So the CD is corrupt from the factory!! Somehow I found the troubshooting file on the CD. It said to go to their support web site. To get support you will need to send them a Dxdiag file from your computer, download and install Flash player, download and install Mozilla Firefox. Now open your new web brouser and type in their support website to get help. It tells you to insert the CD and open their patch. Lo and behold, the first thing the patch does it to repair the corrupt cabinet file. So why does a big company release a CD that never should have left Quality Control. I emailed them and am still waiting for an answer. So unless you are prepared to do some major troubleshooting, buy your child something else. (All three SW games that I tried had a host of bugs and needed patches-buyer beware. I won't be buying the first Legos edition, since I hear it has even more bugs).

My 7 year old, who is a huge Star Wars fan loves this game. Good for kids since when you "die" you regenerate in the same spot. Great graphics which will run without a program like 3DA, which was needed for the previous Lego Star Wars.
Don't even try installing it without first going to the LucasArts website and downlaoding the Installer Patch. Had all sorts of problems trying to get it to install until I did a web search and came upon a forum about this. Pointed me to the patch and then it was OK. No way to know otherwise though, which is unfortunate. |
