8069 is an excellent design in terms of functionality. The philosophy behind this design appears to be maximum functionality with the fewest parts. 8069 may not be nearly as good looking as the LEGO TECHNIC Front Loader 8265 from 2009 or the LEGO Technic Excavator from 2008, but it has a lot of neat tricks up its sleeve.

The new compact (mini) linear actuators (mLAs) introduced with this model perform smoothly. Mechanically, these appear to be a much better fit for manually operated Technics designs. Unlike the larger fully encapsulated linear actuator designs that were introduced with the 8294, mLAs don't require you to turn the knobs forever to get a useful range of motion. You also get to see exactly what is going on in terms of mechanical coupling.

The mechanical design design for the front bucket (lift and tilt functions) is simple but it works quite well. The only complaint may be that the maximum lift for the bucket is relatively limited. There are two gear-knobs on either side of the model that can control the lift. I am not sure if this was intended for the convenience of both left-handed and right-handed builders, but it does work quite effectively to increase the speed with which the bucket can be raised by using both hands to turn alternating knobs simultaneously.

The yellow translucent 2x2 round brick on the top of the cab controls steering. The steering system works is simple but smooth with decent range of motion on turns. The two black gear-knobs on top of the rear side of the cab control the excavator arm.

I bought it for the parts to begin with, especially the new mini actuators but soon realised after completing the set that it would be a while before I plucked up the courage to take it apart. Its still in the living room (much to my wifes annoyance) where my daughter and I have a go at digging up the carpet every couple of days!
The set is crammed with functional components with seperate winding points for each moving element. These include steering, front bucket tip and raise, backhoe arm raise, extend and slew. The rear outriggers are manual as well but use a simple lever to lock them down in position. This does lift the rear wheels of the floor and makes the set really stable when digging into a pile of bricks.
Its not just the small actuators that are new, theres four new bricks in there that are going to become a 'must have' element for the advanced / expert builders brick pile.
The new mini actuators are really strong and bring a new level of scale for the Lego fans that like to build more complex and functional designs of their own.
In summary, this is a fantastic set that is great fun to build and hours of fun once you've got it together. Its really worth pestering your parents for, especially your Dad because you know He's going to want to have a go!

A very high quality kit, parts go together easily and the instructions are simple and extremely easy to follow. Extremely well done by Lego.

Any kid, or any adult for that matter looking to waste a few hours assembling a realistic looking piece of construction equipment would love this backhoe.

No parts were missing and the finished model looked identical to the box art.

In the last several weeks, I bought a couple of different Lego Creator series sets for wife 2.0's grandson to enjoy building when he comes over to his grandma's house. He really enjoys playing with Lego and has proven time and again that the age range recommendations on the packages that would seem to be too advanced for his age level to be seen as loose guidelines, if that. For example, in building the LEGO Star Wars R2D2 set, he was right there with me in following the directions and getting things assembled correctly, despite some fairly complex assembly requirements for that set.

While I was browsing through those Lego creator 3-in-1 sets this Lego Technic Backhoe Loader showed up as a suggestion and I was instantly drawn to it. It was immediately destined to be mine. Seeing the pictures of the assembled set, I marveled at how much it looks like the device it is modeled after. It looks about as good as I think any Lego model of a Backhoe would ever possibly look with the added bonus that this Lego Technic set includes built-in controls that mechanize the finished model to some extent. There are cranks that make the bucket swing left to right and forward and back, as well as cranks that make the front bucket move similarly. Throw in a control that steers the wheels left or right as desired and you've got a very nice toy to play with once you've completed the assembly of this set.

For me, this set obviously brought back memories of playing with Lego during my younger days (yeah, I know, this is where readers say "D'uh!
