The new compact (mini) linear actuators (mLAs) introduced with this model perform smoothly. Mechanically, these appear to be a much better fit for manually operated Technics designs. Unlike the larger fully encapsulated linear actuator designs that were introduced with the 8294, mLAs don't require you to turn the knobs forever to get a useful range of motion. You also get to see exactly what is going on in terms of mechanical coupling.
The mechanical design design for the front bucket (lift and tilt functions) is simple but it works quite well. The only complaint may be that the maximum lift for the bucket is relatively limited. There are two gear-knobs on either side of the model that can control the lift. I am not sure if this was intended for the convenience of both left-handed and right-handed builders, but it does work quite effectively to increase the speed with which the bucket can be raised by using both hands to turn alternating knobs simultaneously.
The yellow translucent 2x2 round brick on the top of the cab controls steering. The steering system works is simple but smooth with decent range of motion on turns. The two black gear-knobs on top of the rear side of the cab control the excavator arm.Read more ›
The set is crammed with functional components with seperate winding points for each moving element. These include steering, front bucket tip and raise, backhoe arm raise, extend and slew. The rear outriggers are manual as well but use a simple lever to lock them down in position. This does lift the rear wheels of the floor and makes the set really stable when digging into a pile of bricks.
Its not just the small actuators that are new, theres four new bricks in there that are going to become a 'must have' element for the advanced / expert builders brick pile.
The new mini actuators are really strong and bring a new level of scale for the Lego fans that like to build more complex and functional designs of their own.
In summary, this is a fantastic set that is great fun to build and hours of fun once you've got it together. Its really worth pestering your parents for, especially your Dad because you know He's going to want to have a go!
Any kid, or any adult for that matter looking to waste a few hours assembling a realistic looking piece of construction equipment would love this backhoe.
No parts were missing and the finished model looked identical to the box art.
The back hoe is kinda loose in the horizontal motion, so it swings a bit in the center position. Also the motion on the back hoe, while impressive (particularly in gearing), is somewhat limited. The bucket can not be independently moved and the range of motions is fairly confined. It also takes a crazy long time to adjust it. The pro is you can adjust it very precisely for display.
I especially like the safety legs on the side; however, you are a bit limited range of motion if you wanted to lower the front bucket to dig it into the ground and lift off the wheels as you would in real life.
A detail I would have liked to seen is the operators chair being able to rotate/switch from facing forward or backwards.
A few of these things I've been able to improve upon using some extra parts. In particular adding some extra pieces to allow the back hoe to be adjusted in the horizontal from either side.
As an aside, this was the first Lego Technic Kit I've bought or played with in at least 10 years. I wanted something to display in my office and this was very fitting. It was a fun four or so hour build. I was extremely impressed by how easy the instruction manual is to read now. Several of the new pieces were great. As I mentioned before, the backhoe assembly and gearing was especially impressive. I liked the gear actuators so much more then the old pneumatic kits. I wish I had those when I was a kid :(
